Hey everyone! Just wanted to pop in here to give an update and say thank you to everyone in the comments who alerted me nicely that there is actually ONE more step for these clothes after they fail to sell at the bins. I do some research in preparation for these videos, but even with that I missed the step between the goodwill bins and the landfill, I apologize for missing that in the video! So basically as I understand it the step between the bins and the landfill is.. unsold clothes are bound together and sold to different places for different uses(to recycle/reuse the fabric, or to be sold in other countries) at this point some items are thrown away but apparently a good majority does get bought in this final step because the price is very low. Thank you to everyone who informed me of this, and now with all that being said please enjoy the video!

As a sewist and a seamstress the bins are a MUST for thrift fabrics for projects. And DO NOT be afraid of 'The Vultures' they are like bees if you dont bother them, they wont bother you. There's usually a side group (mostly older ladies) that are shopping for quilting fabrics, etc. Just vibe with those people LOL

I was talking to a woman who sews and we were talking about the price of patterns, fabric, buttons, zippers and the like, it's cheaper to just buy retail or thrift. She told me that the items rejected by goodwill get shipped off to third world countries to people living in abject poverty, who waste NOTHING, and it's something she started doing. For example, they- and she sometimes takes a discarded item and uses the buttons, zippers, Velcro. The lace and appliques can be used in crafting. Fabric can be transformed into another item like a child's dress, dresser doily, pincushion, dishrags, quilts, ragdolls and quilted stuffed animals. They'll even cut it into strips and weave it into hot pad/ pot holders or rag rugs. The women in some of these countries have to use them for cloth diapers or feminine sanitary items. My dad said it was like that in his childhood and I do remember my grandmother telling me some of this. If anyone's been keeping up with the news you'll see that this way of life, and growing your own food is on the horizon.

I'm a low income person, intergenerationally, and have thrifted and revamped clothes my whole life. The bins was definitely one of our favorite places, and you're exactly right, the resellers have come much later! I must admit, the thrift stores are a different world for us now. I love that younger generations are looking for second hand clothes because it's much more sustainable. But I am not crazy about the resellers, it takes away us poorer folks from having a chance to score a nice quality item that lasts. I have a great Michael Kors jacket that's lasted me for years and years, and I wouldn't have been able to afford it without thrifting. I love that you're showing folks the options they have at thrift stores, and how much better it can be to find things there and make them your own. I recently made a cloak out of a set of cotton and linen blend Ikea curtains found at goodwill. I dyed them, too! Thanks for the fun Mia, and the great nuance you gave us about the bins, too!

@strayiggytv
@strayiggytv Жыл бұрын
The thing about resellers is their profit margins are not very high. Outside of the occasional brand name grab they're not making much on the items they thrift. Rich people arent reselling from the bins. I don't mean to sound mean but you have the same chance at good items as they do if you're willing to get in there and get them. I know multiple resellers from my local bins who live at or below the poverty line. They work full time minimum wage jobs at gas stations and retail stores and then spend their off days at the bins trying to make "fun money" that they won't be giving to their landlord at the end of the month. The idea that resellers are all middle class Instagram moms is kinda bogus.

@@strayiggytv personally, wasn't thinking about moms making ends meet but more influencers young adults, styling cheap stuff and making it seem worth more. don't have the same chance at finding good stuff cause there's nothing like it where I live. don't think I encountered the same type of resellers that you did on depop and vinted :')

Insider info: I used to work for Goodwill. The stuff at the bin place is a combination of rejects that never made it to the sales floor at the regular stores. And pulls from the rack that didn't sell in around a month or more depending on the volume of the location. They usually alternate the color of the tags or the plastic piece that holds them each week. That way they know how long the merchandise has been on the sales floor. If a rack is starting to get too full to shop they will pull all the pieces with the same color tag and send it to the bin place. That is why you are able to find the random gem in the bin.
@531ashmarie
@531ashmarie Жыл бұрын
What state did you work in? Because I once worked at one in Wisconsin and when they would take stuff off the floor, it all went into the compact machine and we were then told it got sent off to other places. We don't have a bin store here!

@annanardo2358 Жыл бұрын
Goodwill in Erie, Pa. does not have bin shopping. Their prices are high, that's why a lot of stuff doesn't sell. They prefer to just dump it in a landfill and collect insurance money instead. Goodwill is simply shameless, they started out good and jacked up their prices, so our Goodwill has few shoppers. I don't know how they stay open. It's either they change their ways or move out of the building for another charity store to take over.

@VictoriaVlogz
@VictoriaVlogz Жыл бұрын
@@ludlv2373 It depends on the district what they do with the remains. In my district they would pull and sell stuff at the bins. Then they would bundle the cloth items and sell them for mulching into home insulation. Some districts will action off pallets of items in like groups. Others will send it straight to the landfill. Our district had a computer recycling branch and had inmates trained to fix and upgrade them as their work program for ex cons. Then they sold them in the store and gave them away to job seekers in the area.

Every time I have donated clothes, the kid who worked in the front right in front of me is "LEVIS! Going home with me!" No, I thought I was donating items that went directly to the shelter. So even knowing where to donate makes my head hurt. This happened at a local place, at Goodwill, where they THREW AWAY the nice kitchen stuff, never used, before we left the store. Screw that, I guess yard sale next?

When I was a single mom, I shopped goodwill and thrift stores a lot for clothes. It’s a habit that continues now. I always felt guilty for not being able to buy my kid clothes from the regular stores. Recently we were looking through some old photos of her school days..I realized she looked more fashionable than most of the other kids. Lol she told me that kids were always asking where she got her clothes but would always say she didn’t know..more picked it up somewhere lol. It relieved some of the guilt but looking back..I did what I had to do. And yes it is fun searching for those special finds. I never spent more than $15 for formal gowns. Her high school had 3 or 4 formals a year. No way could we afford $300 plus on a gown.

As someone who has worked in the warehouse at goodwill in SF, there is a step missing. The clothes you donate do not always end up on the floor. It is actually sent to the warehouse so it can be examined. While it is there they sort them depending on the town and city it will go to (nice stuff goes to nicer areas). People tag and hang all of the clothes there and put them in huge bins to be sent out. Never try clothes on at goodwill!!!!! My gloves would be brown by the end of my shift. PLUS they have so much inventory they have to compact all the clothes into cubes and stack them and they just sit. Honestly, I would recommend donating to other places. Their inventory is insane.

I don't have a problem with resellers in these scenarios because they're rescuing clothing that would otherwise go to a landfill, but they shouldn't just go there acting entitled to pieces they don't even want / need for themselves when someone else found it first 💀

Mia !! The stuff from the goodwill bins is not only the things people don’t want it’s also the things they don’t want to have to individually sort through in the regular stores And also come from the drop off donation boxes. So it’s definitely some good stuff in there.

Gloves are also a good option because some bins may contain something broken, like glass or sharp plastic. I often wear a glove on just one hand and use that for digging and then have a bare hand so I can feel textures/materials better. I think part of the reason so much great stuff ends up at the bins is because pricing at the regular goodwill stores can often be ridiculously high (for a thrift store), and they don't really discount things more the longer they've been there.

I haven't been bin shopping as I don't think we have this kind of thing in New Zealand. But in 2021 after we had a major lockdown, Mum and I went to an op shop where I found a really beautiful pair of Christian Louboutin heels for $150, I still have them. Couldn't believe my luck when I saw them honestly. Heels like that range from $800 plus, so I am quite proud and obsessed with them. ❤

I can offer one piece of advice to you. No matter which bins place you go to, be sure to never shake out sheets, blankets, rugs those kind of items. The last Goodwill bins that I went to, I proceeded to shake out a large blanket and ended up in the employee bathroom flooding my eyes in the emergency eye flushing sink. It was full of dirt and grass. You never know where things come from when they are donated to the Goodwill.

Another reason to wear good gloves is broken glass! They put glass in with everything else so it can get broken in there and cut you if you’re not careful. Also, some items in the bins never make it to goodwill stores because of quality/style and how full the surrounding stores already are

my mom used to shop in goodwill bins then resell on poshmark. there was a huge issue with city folk coming in and these women would just walk by your cart and start pulling what they wanted out of your cart if you turned around. some wouldnt even wait until you turned away. they would just take what they wanted to resell in street side stalls, or ebay for like a 300% markup. it was rediculous, and violent.
@Spookdog
@Spookdog Жыл бұрын
as someone who crochets a lot I appreciate you saving that crochet blanket and also who cares if you wanna cut it up and make it a top or something, what matters is that you're getting use out of it! only issue I can see with that is cutting crocheted stuff seems like a recipe for disaster lmao but I guess you could prob make it work like stitching before you cut so it doesn't fray? anyway I would be so flattered if I crocheted a blanket and it was thrown into the goodwill bins and someone picked it up and turned it into clothing. it's like adding more art on top of someone else's art that elevates it if that makes sense lol?? but yeah that's such a fun idea. I can totally see why ppl resell items from the goodwill bins bc I can imagine seeing something you just KNOW could find a good loving home and it feels like such a waste to see it get thrown out, but the way people resell it for the price you'd buy something *new* and they're super competitive about it is just so toxic and makes me sad, like why not just leave the items for poor people to be able to buy cute clothes instead of trying to make money reselling it online. I feel like to resell clothes like that you'd have to have a lot of free time and know the fashion trends and be willing to wait a long time for everything to sell and afford to keep investing more money into it so it doesn't seem like an actual job someone would do in order to make a living but just ppl who are already doing ok financially trying to make easy money?? maybe I'm wrong but like idk I've heard so many bad things about resellers. like on one hand if you enjoy shopping and giving old clothes a new life then it can be a great side hustle but on the other hand they could be taking cute clothes before other ppl who really need them can get to them and making them essentially unavailable for poor ppl by pricing them really high online :/ I'm always sad when I see secondhand stuff online that's super expensive and wish I could find stuff like that in my local thrift store but I wonder if any resellers get to the super cute stuff first at the thrift store I go to bc it seems fairly popular. like cmon just bc I'm poor doesn't mean I have to have boring style lmao
