LOVE your channel and getting jealous because of the shorebirds you observed on this trip~~~ but the Albatross (any Albatross) is on the top of my “lifer list”.

Love it! Good job guys-makes me sooo jealous! Using some exposure compensation can help for BIF and any time you have a bright background.

I'd suggest to keep settings on manual. As you're pointing around, the light doesn't really change, so the exposure shouldn't change. But, auto-exposure will change - if you're pointed to the brighter part of the sky, it'll underexpose, and you'll get dark birds in shadows. It's typically better in that condition to just get a blown-out sky, but a good exposure of the bird. You can slowly adjust that manual exposure as conditions change (like the sun comes up), by bumping up/down the ISO and shutter speed as appropriate. Great pair of videos yesterday and today - I've been on that same boat, and this is a pretty good overview of what it's like out there.

Those close shots of the albatross are amazing! Was it overwhelming with so many unfamiliar species?
@BadgerlandBirding

Thanks! They came in waves as we went further offshore so that helped! I wouldn’t say this trip was overwhelming but if we had a ton of species in that super large flock it easily could have been.

A pelagic trip is surely in my future. Great photos. You did not mention that you used any exposure compensation. A dark subject on a bright background will require some positive exposure compensation. Just gotta watch the iso. Love your channel, been keeping up with you guys for years.

Must be rough going back to your own setup after being lent such a full featured camera! You might already know about it, but check out spot metering, it basically tells the camera to expose for the center which is great when subjects are much darker than the background, like birds in flight against a bright sky. Exposure compensation can also help, you can search around for YT videos or articles that'll explain it better than I could in a comment. Those two things definitely bumped up by bird photo game, hope it'll work for you as well!

Haha! I’ve actually tested a bunch of mirrorless setups (videos pending), but I have really enjoyed the OM stuff. Thanks for the tips! I’ll have to check that out!

Hi, good morning to you and Ryan. Haven’t you two just been on a Pelargic trip out to watch sea birds, and you also saw a whale 🐋, some sea lions and dolphins 🐬 ?

Indeed. This is from the same trip but showing you the photography side of it, as opposed to just the birding side.
