Hey Robert, glad to see you got the Rain Parade record. I read about that one in Trouser Press magazine and picked up a UK copy in 1985, which is still minty, but I wanted the RSD version for the bonus disc. David Roback went on to fame with the band Mazzy Star (not as good as RP in my opinion, although Hope Sandoval's vocals are lovely), and the band got a bit of traction when "Carolyn's Song" was covered on This Mortal Coil's third album, Blood. Rain Parade did not put out a lot of music, but it's all worth checking out, including the expanded version of their Explosions in the Glass Palace ep that was released for RSD 2022. It's nice to see someone giving them a shout out, as they were criminally overlooked in their time.

The Paisley Underground scene was out of Los Angeles in the 1980s. Rain Parade, the Three O’Clock, the Bangles, the Dream Syndicate, Green On Red and the Long Ryders were some of the bands that were part of that movement. “Emergency Third Rail Power Trip” was Rain Parade’s 1983 debut album. In 1985, Rain Parade went over to Island Records to release their second album, “Crashing Dream”. Unfortunately, Rain Parade broke up in 1986 with a third album in the oven. It was never released. There were reunions here and there over the years leading to their appearance on a 2018 album called “3x4”. The album featured three new songs by four Paisley Underground bands - Rain Parade, the Dream Syndicate, the Bangles and the Three O’Clock. “3x4” was issued as a double LP on Record Store Day Black Friday 2018 and then rereleased three months later, in 2019. Last year, Rain Parade finally released a third album, “Last Rays Of A Dying Sun” - their first studio album in 38 years.

You can get an app that will create a strobe light so it’s easy to see a zoetrope. And works best in the dark. You might have to dial it in, but it will find a sweet spot to bring out the animations. Speed it up at the edges; slow it down as you shine it towards the center.

The late great David Roback (Mazzy Star) with Rain Parade. Did some members morph into The Three O’Clock?

Actually, the cat timing was perfect. Thanks to you, I grabbed The Rain Parade and the comp Pale Shades of Grey (I saw you made a playlist on YT for it, I suppose you'll talk about it in part 2) So, I was able to give a listen to both records in the store before buying The Parliament was tempting me but the price was too high for me. For Tad, it was eyeing me but I'm not too familiar with the band so will have to listen to it later... Don't know if it will still be there but my store had a bunch of records that were not moving. I didn't see the 300% or I would have grabbed it. Maybe it was gone before I got there or maybe they didn't order it Same with the Blur... Went there around 12:30-1pm, it was nice, busy but not too busy, you could move around the store easily, and they had a good flow of people, coming and going. So, it was quite enjoyable. I did get a couple of used records while I was there. They didn't have the only one I was looking for which actually was not even on the US RSD list (they double check), it's Global Communication - Maiden Voyage by Music On Vinyl so it was probably only in the Netherlands and UK. 1200 copies, I can say that this thing is gone... (it might appear on Discogs for an incredible price from a European seller so with crazy shipping as well). Unless, in the near future, MOV decide to repress it on a regular release (they do that sometimes) Now, off to the Humminguru they and I'll watch your live report video

Zoetrope discs as they typically run at 33 RPM (I've seen a few zoetrope 45 singles) so to get the proper effect, the camera speed has to match or come close to that frame rate. Most phones have a lower fidelity 30 frames per second frame rate that will let it come through, but if you only have 60 fps equipment, a strove light effectually slows the frame rate down. My local store only had one or two copies of most of what I was looking for... I usually work over nights so I used some sick time to be there 8 hours before opening and 7th in line. One record was picked up by one of the six ahead of me (who I congratulated them on picking up... I'm not a hater) but I got everything else, which I'm super happy with. Working a 12 hour shift tonight but have Monday-Wednesday off to give them a spin.
@MrKelleyzinho8 ай бұрын
Soul Jazz has released more than two “% Dynamite” slabs. Sometimes they are 100%. The most tempting for me is the Rain Parade album. It was not as obscure as you think. It was one of the key releases from LA’s Paisley Underground, which included the Bangles, Dream Syndicate, Opal, and Green on Red. I think they released it this year because guitarist Dave Roback recently died. He was a retiring figure, but he gained wider acclaim in Mazzy Star.

He passed away and this record was a tribute. The artists on the record are mind blowing. We're talking Bootsy Collins, Fred Wesley, Stanton Moore, Sean Lennon, Buckethead, Marco Benevento, Alecia Chakour... I believe it's the hidden gem of the day. You still have to to grab one. I have no clue how they produced this album. My only stank is that Jen Durkin wasn't called in to play a part. Nevertheless, the stars range all over the board from Tedeshi Trucks all the way to james brown and the mothership. The Whole album was great.

Seeing that Rain Parade cover got me to thinkin' about balloons. I spose you could say it put me in a Buhloone Mindstate. That Rain Parade cover immediately made me think of the album cover for Songs by Rotary Connection. That Minnie Riperton could hit notes so high that she made helium jealous. Hoy hoy! And you know Disney World has a Minnie and lots of mouse-eared balloons. And you know clowns have lots of balloons. The band Acid Bath had a controversial cover that had a clown holding balloons on it. Looked innocent enough to me. Maybe they thought coulrophobia and globophobia were too much for people. But what about the balloony clown on the cover of Free Design's Sing for Very Important People? That's sposed to be a kids' album. To me, that frowning, crying clown is worse than the happy clown on the Acid Bath cover. Come to think of it, Minnie Riperton sounds like it could be the name of a serial killer. Oh Maya! Those experimenters Matmos have an album called Supreme Balloon that, naturally, has a balloon on the cover. But that got me to thinkin' about what is the supreme balloon on an album cover. Pink Floyd's Animals with its famous piggie balloon got to #3 on Billboard's US chart. Pink Floyd's as known for pig balloons as a ribfest. Oink oink! Now, do we consider a zeppelin a balloon? Could Led Zeppelin I be the most well-known cover with a balloonesque object on it? Oh, but that's so sad! Disasters make me feel so like that clown on the Free Design cover. How 'bout we turn that frown upside down with Steve Martin's cover for Let's Get Small. That's putting balloons to good use. That album reached #10 on Billboard's US chart. But I can get higher than any of those albums. I'm going up, up, and away in my beautiful balloon. See you in the 5th Dimension. Stay groovy. Honorable Mention: I Turned Into a Helium Balloon. CD only Nuggets-style psych comp by Big Beat Records. Dishonorable Mention: "99 Luftballons" by Nena. There's not even a single luftballon on the cover for that single.

The content sounds really good as I sampled two tracks on Spotify. I don't know how often I would listen to it. Nevertheless, SR Tharpe's vocals and guitar playing are on point based on the samples. The only other one I was somewhat tempted by was the Gandalf. There is just something off-putting about the vocals on that one. I do like the Nature Boy track as that is one of my favorite songs.
