I’m from China, where we have a tradition of married daughters returning to their parents’ home with New Year gifts during the Spring Festival. Do you have a similar tradition in your part of the world?

☺ The New Year is less than two weeks away for all of you now. Very exciting. I am curious to know why the daughter are to bring gifts every year. Also, is there a different custom for those who have had their parents pass on to the next world? It is so interesting. Our celebrations, here in Canada, tend to co-inside with religious holidays mostly. Summer also tends to gather family around an outdoor BBQ or at the beach to swim. I usually host family events but people are not obligated to bring things or help out with food preparation. They are welcome to but not mandatory. Sometimes people gather and each family that comes will make something to contribute. We call it a "pot luck". I think the origins of it came from the 1930's in the USA when communities would gather to share food and experience more variety in their diet. Now it is just about "many hands make light work" motto. ☺
Returning to my parents' home with New Year gifts is all about heartfelt intentions rather than the value of the presents. It is a cherished tradition in our region: married daughters visit their parents before the Spring Festival, bringing gifts to express gratitude for their upbringing and love. For over a decade of marriage, this heartfelt gesture has never ceased. Year after year, it remains the same, carrying deep familial affection and sincere appreciation.
