@@Smokeroux - I looked at the location on Google Earth street view after you mentioned the name of the road. Back in 2008 while visiting Tyler, TX I took a trip down to see the battleship Texas. Took the Lynchburg ferry. I capsized one time in a gator infested river in Ocala National Forest, FL. Even though I saw gators previously, I completely forgot about them while trying to get all my fishing tackle, rods, cooler, etc. Couldn't get back in the flooded sit inside kayak and finally doggy paddled/pushed it back to a boat ramp where a local who worked there asked if I had fun swimming out there. Oh I wasn't swimming... I fell in. That's when she said well you should stay out of the water, there's alligators in there. That sent a chill down my spine all the splashing around I did.

I had no idea that tow drivers had to go into the water to retrieve vehicles. I thought that police departments had divers to do all the under water stuff and you just pulled the vehicle out. No matter how much money you make I don’t think it’s enough for what you do.

Because on a rollback when you winch a car up the bed, you’ll have like 3-4 raps of line on the spool and that takes a lot of the capacity out.

Done it before. Had one go off the end of a ramp at speed, right after a cold front. It was around 40°, and police called rotation on it. That’s the only time in my life I’ve ever been hyperthermic. It was quite the experience.

Because on rollbacks, when you run a vehicle all the way up your bed with 100ft cable you have 3-4 wraps of line, which cuts your winches capacity dramatically. For a wheel lift truck that the winches are only used for recovery, it’s fine. Not so for a rollback.

What was that yellow metal thing you attached to the center back of your flatbed and what is its purpose? Is there some reason you have to fish that BMW out at night rather than wait a few hours until daylight? It seems particularly risky to recover this vehicle at night. I thought about snakes (particularly water moccasins) and alligators !! You are really brave !

Agreed alot of unnecessary risk here for a total loss vehicle. We tow for 23 police departments, state, and prosecutor office. This is a diver call. Contrary to his response no police department could or would force a tow guy into water at night without proper ppe. Sorry Dustin I like your content but this was a bad call. Your life is not worth any rotation call.

I disagree. Tell them you’re not going to do what they called you to do, and you’re getting kicked off the scene and they’re calling the next one on rotation. This occupation is full of risks. If you’re not willing to take them, there are plenty of other jobs out there for you. I did my job, and went home safe. That’s what matters.

It’s your responsibility to call a diver if you don’t want to get wet, but in some situations you also can’t charge for it either when you’re contracted to be there. You have to go by the department that you’re towing for’s rates.
