That fruit you got at the market is a mispel. And you are indeed supposed to peel it before eating. It’s one of my favourite fruits. It brings me a lot of childhood memories, we used to have a couple of trees at our house when I was a kid.

Is it the same as "loquat" do you know? We have them in Southern California but they look a little smaller. They're delicious! Meaty inside, sweet and fuzzy skin

Because the skins is slightly fluffy, it feels a little bit as velvet. It doesn’t feel right on your mouth. And they are very easy to peel anyway.

I love this video. I'm going to The Algarve end of Sept this year for two months. I just cannot decide where to go. As a solo digital nomad over 50 would you say it's best to stay in a bigger place like Faro or Lago's as I've heard that it can get abit quiet out of season. I really want to meet people. Thanks so much , Zoe x

I was so thrilled the first time when you said "Kiwifruit" because that is actually the correct name. It's not actually the official name of the fruit, but is just branding. The fruit is not native to New Zealand, but as a business opportunity it was named "Kiwifruit". Kiwi is actually the name of a very important bird in New Zealand. Personally, It does upset me when people use the word Kiwi incorrectly to refer to the fruit. People seem to remember to call them 'passionfruit' or 'starfruit'. I hope anyone reading this will please call it by its full name, and not mistake it for the name of NZ sacred bird. Thanks! :)

For fish, I recommend trying herring if you haven't yet. Was my favorite when I went to europe long time ago. I love eating fish, but not all seafood is fish, I can't eat the weird seafood either, but I'll eat normal fish all day long. Shrimp is also good.

@@catherinekayy yes it does. I’ll eat crab. But I won’t eat octopus cause that too weird. My favorite fish is salmon too. Especially smoked salmon.

@@catherinekayy on other technique is like this: You bite it normally with skin and before chewing it properly, you let the thongue and teeth do the peeling and spit out the skin before chewing it properly (the skin comes out very well and you can easily splitbit in the mouth)

Catherine how do you feel walking into places on your own? Do you get self conscious if you do how do you deal with that? Also is is difficult saying i cant eat all that? These are two things that put me off doing solo stuff sometimes so i am always interested in other peoples tips too. Enjoying the weight journey and travels. Xx
@catherinekayy2 жыл бұрын
Oh I don'treally mind! Sometimes I get self conscious if Im walking the streets alone, that makes me a little nervous, if theres lots of people around it does though! And yes, its a little awkward because I dont want them to think its their cooking, and Im just 100% honest and tell them ive just had a bypass heheh!

Oh your trip looks like a lot of fun. How did it feel being on your own? Would you do it again?

Oh yesss! So it was epic! hehe also its fun just kinda going with it and doing whatever you like hehe

@@catherinekayy I think it can be addictive, just deciding stuff on the fly and arranging stuff exactly as you like it. Glad you had such a fun time, the hostel looked really nice but I'd be scared I'd snore and keep everyone awake! Then they'd want to murder me in the morningn lol. Here I am to name the fruit, despite my delay! I'm the "strange fruit guy" I know, after annoying your comment section about the Pomelo, I want to solve the mistery about the "kiwifruit" that's not a kiwi, actually! Here in Italy we do have kiwi, but they're always "furry" and very brown outside: inside, however, they're almost always green even if in the last years there are few variations like the yellow and the red one. Outside they all look the same. Kiwis are also so much bigger than the misterious fruits you bought. So what is it?! In Italy we call them "Nespole" (Nespola, singular), an ancient fruit known and used since the Roman Empire times :D Specifically you've found the yellow version, more round, plump and orange (usually they're brown). In Italy it's pretty common especially in the countryside houses where it was often present. Common in gardens but not commonly eaten. I don't know, actually, people -young or old- used to eat them. You can find them in some supermarkets, tho. When I was a kid I was used to eat them unripe (it's like eat a VERY unripe and still very green banana. It gives you that sensation of dryness in the mouth. In Italy, to refer to that feeling, we say that "that fruit ties the teeth". When it's unripe it's very different from the orange, plump and round ripened version :D You wouldn't say they're the same thing! And they're indeed cousin of the plum, because they're from the Rosaceae family as well, in the same way of plums, cherry, almond, apricot, sour cherry trees and others :D Wikipedia says that in English they're called medlars? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mespilus_germanica www.google.com/search?q=nespola&rlz=1C1GCEA_enIT995IT995&sxsrf=ALiCzsabwOg6H8RteTr0ZoqvMRZZnmrJ3A:1653426427894&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwj2g5a3hfn3AhVqMewKHRFHBjQQ_AUoAXoECAEQAw&biw=958&bih=927&dpr=1

The “loquat” known as Japanese plum is called nêspera in Portuguese and níspero in Spanish. You do not eat the skin. Originally from China, it is grown all over the world, Asia, Australia, South, Central America, Mexico parts of the US and the Mediterranean since the 16th century.
@catherinekayy2 жыл бұрын
Oohhhh is that what it is?! Thats so cool, yes I learnt not to eat the skin the hard way hahah 🤣 its so tasty, you can't really get them here in England, and least I haven't seen them readily avaliable!
