HELLO FRIENDS!! This week, I ventured to an Amazon Liquidation Store in Raleigh, NC called Treasure Hunt Liquidators to get me a haul of Amazon customer returns! A few years ago, we bought an Amazon Return Box from a liquidation website -- and it was kind of crazy, but we were able to get a lot of stuff for a pretty big discount. So when I heard about an Amazon Returns Store... I figured we had to go! I got a drone, a spice blender, a go pro lens, a massage chair, and a microdermabrasion tool (and a lava lamp & succulent growth light) -- all for $10 each!
You can check out Treasure Hunt Liquidators here!
treasurehun...
treasure-hunt-liquidators.sho...
Quick note -- the in-store shopping segments were filmed in late July/early August, when the mask mandate in NC was lifted -- which is why you see a mix of mask & no-mask! We decided to wear a mask while shopping just because it was kind of close quarters in the store, but it was optional at that time.

I almost imagine with how much they purchase weekly that the staff doesn’t pull a few things for themselves as a bonus - but so much good awesome stuff comes through that eventually it probably looses its appeal and you only grab what you really want/need after awhile and the novelty wears off lol

I'm sure staff sorts out the stuff they want. I know for a fact goodwill does this and stores like ross and tj maxx! I'm sure they've seen a lot of drones and otherwise expensive things come through, and that staff member likely didn't put that Apple watch in a bin lol
@HAIRHOLIC_1
@HAIRHOLIC_1 Жыл бұрын
@@crazylatingirl94 a friend of mine worked at Amazon and he told me that the staff are the ones who actually take the goods out of the boxes, because they only had a computer system that checked the labels on the boxes of retuned goods or undelivered packages, so they only had to make sure to scan the box when they’ve returned it to the warehouse and it was all good. He told me that literally everyone was stealing and doing these tricks, some people even got 60” TV’s, PlayStation’s, phones, laptops etc. If someone thinks that these liquidation companies are getting the real good stuff they’re dreaming because they won’t even make it all the way there in the first place 😂.

This is cool, but there’s a part of me that’s just really uncomfortable. Like we just throw so much away, it’s insane. It’s better that it goes here where someone might find and use this stuff, but the fact that all this stuff exists at all is insane. Whether it’s food or items or clothes, we waste so much that could mean everything to someone else, and keep producing at breakneck speeds in sweatshops just for most stuff to end up in the trash.
@dreamer0georgi
@dreamer0georgi 2 жыл бұрын
I would even argue that people paying pennies for items worth hundreds make them even more prone to throwing them in the trash if they don't like what they get and can't sell it further. It seems like a never ending cycle of waste no matter how you put it :(.
@liliancaran5364
@liliancaran5364 2 жыл бұрын
Returning is not throwing away, and people rarely return things for fun or to waste something. Where ANY product exists, there will be "all this stuff." Waste exists all over the world, even more so in poor countries. At least here we are starting to find ways to reduce and manage waste, including the kind of waste that damages the ocean and other ecosystems. This way people can potentially get items that they otherwise may never be able to afford and could mean a lot to them, and also it's unethical to officially donate items that may not function or be unhygienic, just like it's unethical to donate food that may make someone sick or donate clothes that are dirty and have holes in them
@dodgethis_
@dodgethis_ 2 жыл бұрын
I think one of the reasons why people are so wasteful there is that they can return stuff like that (clearly used, broken, for no reason other than "I don't like it"). The fact that you can return a half-finished piece of cosmetics in the States is mind-blowing to me.
@glittery_cucumber

I'm also sick of online shopping as a whole and videos about it in particular, although this one at least puts a spin on it where the items get repurposed. But shipping alone takes such an unneccesary toll on the environment... Not to mention the work conditions most of these items are produced in. The whole topic is a downer for sure.

I thought the parents of the students buy the teacher supplies. That is what the tissues, markers, and other stuff on the list are for. But it is sad that if a teacher wants to decorate or even have supplies, it either comes from the parents or their own pockets instead of using a modicum of the budget wasted only on administrators instead of the classrooms.

I definitely think that in these types of stores you shouldn't be allowed to "hoard" a corner for yourself because lets be real here, that guy probably got all those products for the sake of reselling them for a mark up and that is scummy. The struggle is real. I tried to buy a spice grinder and was so confused about the results I got on amazon. Palm sized metal boxes, air tight, perfect size to put in your pocket and take with you etc. I was like 'why would I take my ground coriander seeds outside'? Weed is illegal in my country and I only tried it like 20 years ago. But I did find a grinder for cooking, not smoking, eventually.

Your weed joint making machine - you could grind up other stuff to make. How about peppermint to add to sachets? How about things that burn easily for fire starters and perhaps dip them in wax to make them burn more quickly? Grind up sage to make cleaning sticks - see if they burn OK for house cleansings. Use more scented herbs to make popouri sachets, add to dishes to scent a room, or better yet, add to a small tie bag to either hang in the shower or add to the tub to soak in an herb 'tea'. And some of these herb 'joints' may work well in a sauna to make it smell nice when you are steaming. A great compact way to carry your herbs with you for meditational healing. So there you go. Not a 'wasted' purchase. (get it?)

My family works in recycling and there's sooooo many items that can be used that have to be recycles because of business policies- just like amazon and others, other companies can't sell certain opened items or its just not worth the price to repackage and sell, so it gets trashed. On one side, this is very cool and it would probably be a dream to have one of these stores in my country, since my family has always been struggling with money. On the other, it’s very concerning to see how much stuff we throw away, when there are some people that can’t even afford clean water or food. It also seems like a place where lots of people that are actually rich or just average would go, aware that they have the money to buy a fully priced item, but they’re just greedy and always want more stuff for less in return. I could imagine a poor person showing up at the store to get something because they need it and giving up when seeing the line of rich people that are there just to get even more rich.
@vixxcelacea2778
@vixxcelacea2778 Жыл бұрын
It's not uncommon for rich/middle road people to want to save more and they tend to be stingy. So you are correct. This is also why I dislike hustle culture, auctions, blind buys etc. Because people are usually only interested for profit to resell, not to actually use an item that can improve their quality of life, even by a small amount. I even see people raid thrift stores for "vintage" stuff, taking anything decent and turning around and selling it. It's all very depressing.

In a way it’s good that these places exist because otherwise this stuff would all end up in landfill. However, I think we’ve really got to change the way we view purchasing. If we put thought and time into purchase decisions we wouldn’t be returning as much as we are. Obviously sometimes we will be unhappy with a purchase due to sizing etc, but we still can sell it on ourselves or give it away to someone rather than returning it to a company who (without places like this) will put it straight into landfill. Not to mention the extra CO2 emissions from you returning your random plastic kitchen gadget. Respect your money, respect workers, respect the environment.

Yeah seeing people buying hauls of stuff from Amazon with the assumption that you will return a lot of it is not sustainable. You never know if it's going to be resold or just go in the trash.
@TheSongwritingCat
@TheSongwritingCat 2 жыл бұрын
I think it's complicated because if, for example, you buy a blender that doesn't work, you can't give it away or resell it. You can take the loss but you will still throw it away. As for items that can be resold (mostly clothes), there needs to be more pressure on companies to actually resell those items instead of calculating that the costs of reverse logistics are too high. Similarly, if rules were altered, companies would have more incentive to manufacture higher quality gadgets that would be less likely to be returned. This would drive up costs for products but it would ultimately be better for consumers to have confidence in the products they were buying.
@AmandaTitus85
@AmandaTitus85 2 жыл бұрын
A large part of the responsibility should lie on the massive companies. Amazon does not give a single care about the environment. Consumers can only do so much but these multimillion dollar companies can do so much more
@lswt6026
@lswt6026 2 жыл бұрын
@@AmandaTitus85 I agree, but I also think we can do a lot. For example, we can buy from companies that care about the environment/their products. There are companies that take back their packaging and recycle it into more packaging for their products. There are also companies that take back their products and repair them or recycle them into more products they sell. It’s even better to buy secondhand- or better yet- buy less things.

Materialism is a big part of it, yes. But it's also that home delivery is simply not the best way to get some things -i would even say MOST things. These centers exist, and also Kohl's stores handle Amazon returns. I don't know if all of them do, or only a few kohl's. But at the one i worked at last year we had at LEAST 20 returns per day, if not more. It might seem convenient, but adding in the disappointment of getting a damaged or inadequate item, having to pack it, take it somewhere, and then still end up needing to actually find a good version of what your looking for and get that instead -it adds up. I really believe that 95%+ of the time people are better off just shopping in person

Never leave the machine in one spot, it should always be moving, you might get hickies bahahah 3. How you were doing the nose was perfect! 4. Try not to do this more than once a week as it could be too much exfoliation on your skin. 5. Make sure to use a moisturizer/serum after as you’ve got some fresh skin that needs hydrating! The waste is a problem, but why bring capitalism into this? Capitalism is an economic style for how things are sold, excessive consumerism is a cultural thing and has to do with the buyers, not the sellers? Or a behavior developed through growing up very spoiled. As for the large amounts of excess products, this once again has to do with the buyers? They keep returning perfectly intact products instead of using them. Or at least this is my understanding, ofc correct me if I’m wrong on smth, but I always remember capitalism being taught as an economic system
@Sackofpotates
@Sackofpotates 2 жыл бұрын
@@thetiredworm2100 well this quantity problem is a direct result of capitalism as the core value of all companies under capitalism is the maximization of profit, that means all other values that a company might have will always be overshadowed by the goal of making as much money as possible. I'm not even exaggerating that's exactly how it's written in economy text books. But if you have even juuust a smidge of life experience you KNOW that profit comes at the cost of people that actually did the labor and the environment. You could solve some issues by setting more regulations but people would complain that that's communism (it's not, it's just government doing their job).Capitalism created sentences like this -produce food if you can profit, if not let them starve

@@thetiredworm2100 it's very nice of you to defend big companies that mass produce, I'm sure they're very thankful. Coming from a small business owner who sells on Amazon: if a package is opened and used Amazon will (hopefully catch it and not send it out as new) then ask the business if they want to pay for shipping to ship it back to the business or pay (less money) for Amazon to "dispose" of it for them. I'm guessing that's where these items all come from. Also little known fact, people think Amazon loses money from returns but make so much it doesn't matter. Amazon only loses money on their own brand products. For any third party seller, the third party pays for that free shipping and free returns, plus pay amazon processing fees. So they don't lose money and in fact make a little from liquidation sales

So anytime an item is returned you cannot re sell it on Amazon at all?
@KarinYuen
@KarinYuen 2 жыл бұрын
@@banshee1133 not if it has been clearly opened and used. We don't have any way to talk to the Amazon workers so we can't tell them how to check or what to look for, so some shady people will take advantage on this and return only half things (like taking tips and filters from the microdermabration tool) and get a full refund. We can send it back to ourselves and see if it has been used or if it can be repackaged. We donate anything we can't sell but it is the most expensive route to ship it back to ourselves. If items are reported as broken or if the item is inexpensive to begin with, I imagine a lot of companies going with the Amazon disposal route because it's more cost effective.

The liquidation store in my town separates the high end items and either auctions it or just marks it at a higher price. Like for example, the massage chair would probably be around $50 if it was at mine. The bin prices start at $5 (or $7 depending on what the owners are feeling) and goes down progressively and ends at 1 dollar on Tuesday. Closed for restocking wed-fri and back open on Saturday. Its kinda strange

You should add a more clear warning message to the battery charger hack & slash part. Forcing a charger and a Lithium battery together is generally a *VERY* bad idea unless you're 100% sure of the compatibility. You can have dangerous outcomes. Even just showing that on a video isn't a great idea to begin with.

Amazon definitely doesn't do that with all of the returns. I watch some dumpster diving videos where people are constantly finding Amazon returns in Target and other store trash dumpsters, stores that take Amazon returns. Amazon evidently doesn't even want the items sent back to them at all. A lot of times the returns haven't even been opened. Weird, right?

It feels so strange to me watching this video because whilst the stores are great for getting good deals, it just feels like an ode to our over-consumption and over-consumerism. I like that it allows people to get things at a great price if they otherwise couldn't afford it, but I dunno, it also feels kinda annoying with the way that some people are trawling these stores for their "side hustles" when less well off people could definitely benefit from getting some of these things and getting good use out of them. Great video still though. I could see that there were things that even I could use there!
