i imagine it must be a nightmare if you or one of your friends has had one too many dutch gins, wanders off and then you're trying to find them - or for that matter just meeting up with unhelpfully vague mates: "I'm at the bar" "right. which one?" "..." "i've ordered them little sausage things, which table are we again?" "..."

The interconnected bars are an interesting feature, it allows you to move around a little more and have different experiences in the same bar. The main draw of this is probably still that it is well known and in a very central location. There also used to be a small bar/dancing under it with a bit of a dubious reputation, 'de Blauwe Engel' (the Blue Angel), though I haven't been to Groningen for years, so I don't know if that still exists or not. Even at the time, it was still a bit more of a meme than an actual place you wanted to go.

One thing I always loved when I was still in my twenties and sometimes in Groningen for the weekends, that some bars and nightclubs were open until extremely late. This is a bit uncommon in the Netherlands, as most cities have a way stricter policy when it comes to that.

(Outercircle) and in the sportsbar (innercircle) There’s also a karaoke bar with different private rooms you can rent in themes like barbie and moulin rouge, a turning bar (draaibar) and the westend (we call it the westend) where we have thirsty thursdays! (Games and drinks). So glad to see you liked it☺️

Sounds like the bar has improved and kept up with the times, offering more than just basic drinks. I'll be sure to visit it the next time I'm in Groningen. The main issue is that it is so far away from the rest of the Netherlands, costing an arm and a leg to travel to by train and basically not great to travel to by car.

The urban legend is that the jenever is where the term Dutch courage comes from - when British soldiers fought with the Dutch they shared the jenever and it relaxed them before battle. Also great choice with Texels - one of the best dutch beers IMO, (it's prononced 'TESSULS' btw) - the skuumkoppe means 'foam head' - I guess because Texel is a small island it's like you're drinking the foam of the sea or something.

Jenever is a dutch gin from the 16th century. It gained fame as Dutch Courage, as the Dutch navy provided (bravery inducing) jenever to the dutch soldiers before going into battle. Jenever was brought to England by William III, where they called it gin, short of jenever. And yes it is wranck !!

I’m from Groningen (I also live in the city center of it): I never knew the “drie gezusters” is the biggest pub from Europe. I know you have 4 entrees (each one has their own entertainment and atmosphere): one is sportbar orientated (another one too, but bit less more pub and food), one lounge, one for more coffee and cake. Also upstairs, what is only open during midnight, you have the “draaibar” (a bar what moves rotated ) and the “etage” (a place what is not o open anymore unfortunately). I remember a party at the “etage”’where we illegally steeped on the roof from a window what was between the toilets upstairs from it. At 08:05: Texels skuumkoppe is indeed a beer from one of our islands: it’s actually towards the UK. We have 5 of them (little islands on the west side towards north from the NL 😁) hope you had a blast in Groningen! (Oh and the martini tower still has bullet holes from WW2)

Fun Fact: Texels Schuumkoppe isn't actually brewed on the Island of Texel. There is a small brewery with a bar on the island, but the that's mainly for show. Texels beers you'll get in bars or stores are actually brewed in the Heineken brewery in Den Bosch, which is pretty much on the other side of the country. It does say it on the bottle, but it's printed very small to kinda hide it. Nevertheless, it's one of my favorites from the tap.

Fun to see. Could've added some fun facts though. The Dutch drink 'jenever' is actually the origin of 'gin' as you know it. You might've guessed it from the name because the way you pronounce it, it sounds like gin-and-some-more-letters, which is exactly what the British soldiers would've made from it when they took it to England during the 80-years war and made gin out of it. The origin of jenever itself is actually medicine. It is made from juniper berries. Yellow berries that grow on bushes in sandy areas like dunes. These berries are very high in vitamins. To preserve them and their medicinal qualities they were put in alcohol. That way they discovered that this didn't only preserve the berries, but also transferred the particular taste of the berries to the alcohol. Or, as you could see it, it was a way to make a tasty drink. They named it after the juniper berries. They are jeneverbessen in Dutch, so the drink was called 'jenever'. This became very popular and one of the main staples in Dutch pubs. British soldiers came into contact with it during the 80-year war and took it back with them. Because of the hard pronunciation it was shortened to gin. And the drink 'gin' evolved further to what it is now. Dutch people usually don't drink it anymore. It is out of fashion. It stems from a time when there were not that many bottles on a shelf and it was a cheap drink for the masses. Old people still drink it though. I had one guest in the hotel where I worked who had a 'jenever' every day of the year and who swore that the medicinal qualities of it kept him healthy. Might've been true. He aged very well and was sharp, successful and very healthy even at older age. So he might be on to something... ;)

I once got absolutely lost in that place, mixing up the exits (it has exits to every side road and to the square), and couldn't find my friend for an hour. Now, granted, it was on Koninginnedag (Queen's Day) about two decades ago, which makes the place hit quite a bit different (they had a different 'style' of party at every bar). Went there again some years ago and that was quite a bit more like the vibe it has in this video; some nice places to chill and have a drink.

Pretty funny as you drink that Heineken, you're even more of a foreigner in one of our pubs. This is one of our most export oriented beers. If you really wanted to try interesting dutch beers, you'd be much better off trying one of the many craft beer breweries that we have in our country. The Texels Skuumkoppe is a mainstream example of that, certainly not bad. The absolute best is the stuff that you can rarely find in the supermarket, but only at craftbeer festivals and in specialized beer stores. Thanks for showing us around in Groningen, good fun.

Bitterballen contain ragou. A mix of meat, flour, vegetables. A fried ball of thick stew, basically.

Hope you enjoyed your time in Groningen, you told me you were going to visit! Two good facts: Het Goudkantoor, your first pub, was for tax collection and there's a latin sentence on the front that translates to: "give the emperor what's the emperor's" refering to Napoleon. And jenever is often ordered as a kopstootje, where you get a shot of jenever and a beer and you use the beer the same as a lemon with tequila to get rid of the taste. You should've tried a Berenburg though, as it's more a thing of the northern part of the Netherlands and is a sweet herby style of jenever and often mixed with cola.

I learned to drink jenever [yenayvor] because is was relatively cheap in clubs. I love the taste now.

Het goudkantoor where the presenter was sitting down is a bar/restaurant which is located in a building which was built centries ago as a building where gold was weighed and traded. That's a very interesting bar in and of itself. ''goud'' means gold, and ''kantoor'' means office.

Love this mate - solo adventure, few pints, exploring a new city and bar. It's what its all about. I listened to the Happy Hour podcast when they had Simon Wilson on and both Jack and Stevie said they'd never do anyhing solo. Sad really.

How many countries you can drink in, in a single day? Well 5 should be super easy. Start in Maastricht in The Netherlands, take the train to Liege in Belgium, then onwards to Luxemburg. Further down south to Metz in France and then Saarbrucken in Germany. I think that will only be around an hour per train ride so that leaves plenty of drinking time. If you actually use the full 24 hours you can perhaps go further down to Switzerland, quickly have a beer in Liechtenstein, hop over to Austria and then a bit further down south to Italy. So 9 should be doable when you really make an effort. Dont really now how that would work during night time, but in theory at least, it should be possible.
