100% spot on about differences between western and eastern Europe. I settled in Romania about 8 years ago, originally from England and have never regretted the move once. Its my home now and will be for the rest of my days. Real village people are the salt of the earth, hard work and hard life but they have what they need and will always welcome you. One of the main reasons I moved to Romania is I value that sense of community and family and also the religion suits me. Plus just a beautiful country with a long long history. It would be a great place for you to move to.

Romania is beautiful and people tend to be decent to guests especially but also a lot of foreigners go to the extremes of either an overly negative view based on exaggerated stereotypes, or an overly positive, romanticized view based in being a white, west european/american expat in a poorer country. Yes, as a westerner you can live amazingly in Romania and you're likely to, overall, be treated extra well and most expats don't live on the average salaries of the average person here. But village life for the average villager is tough and there's few opportunities, there's a lot of work, a lot of poverty, a lot of generational trauma caused by these conditions and lack of mental health support and education so there's a lot of violence, verbal, emotional and physical, a lot of alcohol abuse, a lot of s*xual abuse, kids growing up with angry, disenfranchised, traditionalist parents who end up like them. Yes, life in eastern europe/the balkans is great as a white, male, west european because you can always go back home, you work in corporations, get western salaries or come with some money acquired there and have that aura of the emancipated westerner from better, richer lands that influence how you are treated. If you're a lower/lower middle class east euro/balkan, more so if you're also a woman life isn't so great but you were probably looking for that non woke, religious, traditional family values thing that hurt everyone who isn't you
@eedragonr4 ай бұрын
@@entity22you better hurry up and ask the peasant "geboren en getogen" there what were the Orthodox traditional family values of his parents and grandparents there. I am pretty sure that after decades of communism nobody has any idea of what that really meant. @@andrasiboti Well, of course, because they're protective of their territory and you can get on their wrong side by making too much noise. The shepherd dogs are only dangerous if they're on duty, so if you don't see their charge anywhere near, they're probably just looking for food. And most of them know humans will give them food eventually. There's always been one dog accompanying me on hikes around Ardeal, and it just makes it that much better.
@ekesandras14814 ай бұрын
Since there were no sheep, this was not a shepard's dog. And usually they are not alone, but at least five or more (everything else is useless against bears). The biggest problem today is that nobody wants to work anymore as cioban (shepard), so the sheep owners just let the dogs guard the flock and they probably show up once a day with their ATV. When there is no shepard around and the dogs get angry at you, you have a problem.

The most brutal of all communist dictators, Nicolae Ceausescu, was in power. I had a terrible experience with customs and the police, and I'm sure I was watched the entire ten days I spent there. Few people were friendly, most were either suspicious or begging me with tears in their eyes for something like my t-shirt or jeans. As a Romanian guy I laughed a lot..All their lives the Romanians admired western civilization and wanted to live like "the American dream" and now the Americans and other western European people began to come to find isolated places in the mountains to flee from the greed of capitalism. This is where corporate capitalism brought us.

Demos = Folk Cratos = Govern But the old Greec Word Demos having a Total other meaning. make sure you protect your lands your values your traditions and dont let anyone to come and start making business out of you and turn it into a village first then a capitalistic venture into a city.. Look what happened to Bali and the uncontacted tribes of the amazon forests. They are all the puppets of western culture tourists who cannot do any introspection they keep going to places instead of going inside and learn to sit still and be happy wherever they are. tourism is the most stupid thing anyone can do.

well last 4/5 years we almost had no winter in Romania but in Mountain side it might be a little cold! For example 10/15 years ago we used to had very hard winters like 50/60 cm of snow with streets closed and places stuck because of the storm, last year we had same problem with road closed in moldova side wich is North, East region but this bad weather least max 2 weeks or let's say 1 month... long time ago we used to have winter from november to march! Now with this global warming we used to have mountain zone like Poiana Brasov (skating zone some time ago) with no snow at all... not even the artificial snow can least because of the weather on ++

This video brings back fond memories when I visited Alba Julia in 1996. One day we went up into the mountains, an hours drive away and it was like going back into another world.. we went through a small gorge and later we climbed up high up onto the mountain side, where we thought there was an almost deserted village. We met two of the inhabitants who are very friendly. Ah yes, the Tuica! Very powerful schnapps type of drink.
@razvanpastor361514 күн бұрын
Probably you went from Alba-Iulia to Trascaului mountains (romanian - muntii Trascaului) passing through the Valisoara gorge (romanian - cheile Valisoarei) and possibly to the village of Rimetea. All of them in Alba county. In the Valisoara gorge now there is a huuuuuuge restaurant, medieval castle style. Give it a google images search and maybe memories will come back

Țuica is normally made from plums. I don't think that the guy who offered țuica is Turkish because he spoke only in Romanian and he was drinking alcohol, which the turks, being muslims (at least most of them), do not drink. Which means that the Turkish flag (IF it was really that!) was very puzzling...
@ionutblaz34 ай бұрын
The elders use objects for aesthetics or function and they almost never throw away anything. The flag was either a gift, or he must’ve found it. It’s common to see elders wearing a brand they have no idea about.

Mate, it's quite common for mountain dogs (all races) to follow people on the paths and believe it or not they do it to protect you from wild animals, bears, wolves etc. I think it's somehow in their DNA to do that in our country. They are not trained like Saint Bernards for example, even stray dogs they do this all the time. Anyway, Romania is one of the best countries to be in, I traveled a lot too, more than 40 countries and islands so far, yet here is pretty much a good place for you to establish, maybe not so remotely but it's a great country overall. Nice video btw. All the best!

I’m happy for you and grateful that you’ve chosen to explore the beauties of Romania. I wish you nothing but wonderful experiences. Unfortunately, I can’t say I had the same in Belgium. During a trip through Belgium, I stopped at a gas station and asked for a pack of cigarettes in English (as it’s the only foreign language I speak). The cashier, with a decidedly unfriendly and impolite expression, reminded me that people speak French in Belgium (a language I regrettably don’t know). I apologized in English and said that it wasn’t an issue, and I’d try my luck at the next station. That was enough to tell me all I needed to know about Belgian hospitality.
@haroldhals734 ай бұрын
indeed: as a Belgian I truely appreciate the kindness of Romanian people... both in Belgium and in Romania...
@pluisnonplux97284 ай бұрын
In Belgium there is a language war going on; the eastern part (Wallonië) people speak French, the western part (Vlaanderen) people speak Dutch... And specially in Wallonië they often refuse to speak Dutch... I'm from the Netherlands and i don't speak French, so i had also such a rude experience...🤨🫣🥴😔 But there are also a lot of very friendly Belgian people ✨💖✨
@de_da_ooАй бұрын
Speaking of judging the book by the covers, I am pretty sure not all Romanians are nice, and the same goes for Belgians
@timtense9 күн бұрын
As stated above, in the south of Belgium people speak French and they're not very language savy. In the north (Flanders) people are usually pretty fluent in English. I'm from the North but pretty much on the border with the French region so I speak English and French pretty well next to my mother tongue Flemish. Belgian hospitality is definitely not like in Romania, that's why I don't live in Belgium 🤣
