Well, this is it. The end of this Undertale Musical let's play. I wanted to understand why everyone loves this game so much and I think I came away with a beautiful understanding of that. Look out for an eventual analysis video of the music of Undertale and what my take aways from the game were, or perhaps even, my favorite songs. I hope you enjoyed this.

I do understand genocide ending is one of the "harsh" route and it's going to take A LOT of times just to finish it For most of us who've done genocide route, other than being lovely and all in the P ending, G ending really makes you think why you play games But stopping at P ending is no wrong, I know whole lot of people stopping here, keeping everyone safe and sound is great! Unlike us who've done it have no chance to bring that peace back

If you're still wondering why you were fighting Asriel Dreemurr Basically, after he came back from the outside world, he died in a bunch of flowers, spreading his ashes through them. There are several hints everywhere as to how it all works. Alphys mentions that the golden flowers from the outside have very sticky seeds. So Asriel brought them with him upon his return to the underground. In the "librarby" there is a book saying that it is a custom amongst monsters that upon death, they usually spread their dust onto their favorite things, so their essence lives in them. Well, it turns out that is actually true. That's why, when Asriel died in the garden, he both spread the sticky seeds and his dust all over, leaving his essence there. When Alphys took a golden flower and injected "Determination" on it. It gained "the will to live". And there you have faux Asriel as Flowey. But as hinted by Alphys log, "What happens when something that doesn't have a soul gains the will to live?" Well, the genocide route gives a lot of insight into why Flowey is the way he is, but basically, Something without a soul is unable to feel emotion, or care about things.

In the true lab tapes, the people speaking were Asgore, Toriel, and Asriel. "Marco" was the fallen human, although their true name is "Chara" (short for "Character"). Chara hated humanity + wanted to free the monsters, and made a plan with Asriel to commit suicide via buttercup flowers (why they got sick and died) so Asriel could take their soul, cross the barrier, get 6 human souls, and come back. (It's implied that Chara might have been suicidal before, as Asriel says they didn't come to Mt. Ebott for a very happy reason.) Asriel had second thoughts about this plan, and so didn't hurt any of the humans, allowing them to attack him. This mercy resulted in his death, and is why Flowey (Asriel's new incarnation) has the mindset "kill or be killed."

To shatter the barrier, the power of 7 human souls was needed. We only had 6 in the end, however... In the waterfall area, it is said that to match the power of even 1 human soul, you would roughly need the soul of every monster in the Underground. Undertale is borderline life changing, i remember when this game came out and i was in my early teens. Seeing it changed me as a person, basically taught me compassion and how our actions can ruin other people lifes but in the same manner can make them better. Undertale taught me that kindness is free and it doesnt take anything from you to give to others, that just by tring to do good is enough. The evil route of this game showcases the total oposite of the true ending, how being selfish can make others suffer at your expense. Other comments here have explained this already, but if you care to read, I can explain the story with more detail, and recap the story. Long ago, in 201X, the first human to fall down to the Underground was found by Asriel, Asgore and Toriel's son. When you begin the game and name the "Fallen Human," this is whom you're _actually_ naming. The protagonist you play as is named Frisk. The Dreemurr family treated the human as one of their own. If you remember the tapes in the lab, the Human (Marco) and Asriel talk about a "plan." This plan was to finally free the monsters from the Underground. They believed they had the power to do it. In the tapes, Marco talks to Asriel about the time they accidentally got Asgore really sick with buttercup flowers. Their plan was, quite morbidly, for Marco to eat a bunch of buttercup flowers, poisoning themselves, becoming very ill, and dying. Asriel would then take Marco's soul, and with it, cross the barrier (as both a Human and a Monster soul are required to pass the barrier, which is the whole conflict with fighting Asgore). They would then, with their new power, kill six humans and take their souls, for a total of seven human souls, and with them, destroy the barrier, freeing the monsters once and for all from their eternal prison. They did so. With Marco's body clutched in his arms, Asriel crossed the barrier with their soul, and travelled to the village of the Humans. Asriel placed Marco's body upon a bed of golden flowers at the village center. Humans left their houses and saw Asriel hovering over Marco's body. They assumed that Asriel had killed the human. They struck Asriel with blow after blow, attacking with everything they had. Even so, Asriel had the power to destroy them all. But he did not fight back. Asriel merely smiled, and walked away, back to the barrier. He did not want to harm the humans. He forfeited the plan. He arrived back at the monster castle, whereupon he succumbed to his wounds, collapsing to the floor, his dust spreading across the golden flowers. The Dreemurrs had lost _two_ children in one night. The Underground was full of despair. Asgor, in a desperate act to give the Underground hope, declared that all humans to fall from now on would be killed, their souls taken. And with enough souls, the barrier could finally be broken. Toriel, disgusted with her husband's actions, left the monster Kingdom never to be seen again. (Unbeknownst to them, she is in isolation within the Ruins, where we meet her.) Skipping some time... Asgore told Alphys, the Royal Scientist, to research the nature of souls. I'm not going to explain all this, because she explains it herself in this very video. During her research, when looking for a test vessel to inject Determination into, she chose a candidate: the first golden flower from Asgore's garden, that appeared right before the Queen left. Unbeknownst to her, this flower was covered in the essence of Asriel's dust (from the prior event). When she injected Determination into the flower, she created... Flowey. Flowey, thus, has no actual soul. So with that being said, when Flowey absorbed the six humans souls, and all the monster souls, he was able to achieve his original form (Asriel). Some extra details: if you were to backtrack to the very start of the game after defeating Asriel, you would find him at the first room. The room with the bed of golden flowers, that you fell upon. This is believed to be where Marco was buried. If you talk to him, he would tell you a number of things. You can search online to see his full actual dialogue, but here's important aspects of the story. One, Marco hated humanity. "Why they did, they never talked about it. But they felt very strongly about that." Two, he admits that, when he absorbed Marco's soul, the control over Asriel's body was actually split between them. Marco is the one who carried their own body back to the village. Marco is the one... "Who... Who wanted to use our full power. I was the one who resisted." If you've read this far, I respect your desire to learn and understand more about the beautiful story of Undertale. I hope you enjoyed this, and hopefully this provided a lot of insight.

I haven't played this game again since 2016, and, man, I'm still not ready to... I was alone in a house, depressed, with no friends, and, man, that game was so warm... I'm so thankful of how long the ending is, because it allowed me to let go at my own pace. I stared at the blank monitor for minutes after. Since then I've became an adult, things have gotten worse... I hate being in this world, and hate being myself. ...but I'm able to work on my own special little game, which is very inspired on UNDERTALE. I always say to myself, I don't care about success, if a single person out there holds it dear to its heart, feels warmth, feels seen... I've have achieved my purpose. I wonder if you'd get to play it one day. My music sucks though, so not on your channel. Until then, Thank you.

Your expression said it all. Especially when you were saving Toriel. I can understand why that may hit harder. I hope you're doing well and found playing Undertale cathartic in some way. The ending gets me every time. A literal message to hold onto your hopes and dreams. Do not let go! Things will get better. It doesn't feel like it when you're in that struggle, whether it be grief, mental health, loss, a different tragedy of some kind...but its true. From lived experience, there will be things you'll experience later that make you happy you stuck around. Undertale is a story of the importance of love, compassion, and CHOOSING to extend mercy and kindness to those who wish to hurt you. But to also survive and keep going. Pacifism doesn't mean just rolling over. I played Undertale in college and in hindsight, I had a lot of unacknowledged and undiagnosed problems going on. Undertale is well made and I think would have had an impact anyway, but the music, themes, and messages hit just a little harder and connect to whatever struggles the player has experienced. Thank you for sharing something so vulnerable with us in this series. I'd love to see your thoughts in a future video now that you've had time to process. Your insight is always fun and engaging! There's a lot to also be said about Asriel/Flowey, but that can be saved for another comment.

I don't think I can put into words how much this ending, and the game as a whole mean to me. It's message of love, of empathy, of understanding, it reached something deep within my soul and touched it in a way I don't think another piece of media has ever done. While I understand why Hopes and Dreams gets all the love and praise, I cannot choose it over SAVE The World, there's so much hope, so much determination in that track, and it's helped by one of my favorite moments ever, which is the "saving the souls part", god I cry so hard whenever I get to that, no matter how long or how many times I've seen it, Toriel especially. It's a beautifully crafted moment with the best song to match it. And then you're hit with His Theme and god I will never be able to spend the last bit of this game with a dry face, Asriel's story is so devastating, so sad, and his song plays perfectly to it, it's an emotional journey. Hugging Asriel has got to be one of the most heartbroken I've ever felt while playing a game. His grief, his unwillingness to let go of the original human, fuck, it's so good. Both Reunited and Respite fill me with so much positive energy and emotion, it's love, it's all about love man, god, I can't, seriously, I'm tearing up while writing the comment. I'm glad the game reached you in whatever way it did, it's different for everybody, but it seems like the way it touches one's soul is always impactful. But in a video game, you can feel it. 2- You don't have to empathize with the character on screen, the feeling happens directly to you. The whole final boss battle is _beautiful_ on so many levels. Not only are Asriel’s attacks just fun to look at, but Hopes and Dreams really sells the moment as a hopeful battle against impossible odds, and the SAVE the World tune is both exciting and heartwarming-of course, I am a huge sucker for violins. Plus, Asriel’s Theme is just so emotional in that final moment after the fight-I still get misty-eyed at that part. After everything, Flowey was just a sad child who missed his friend and didn’t want to say goodbye. If you walk back to the previous areas, there are a lot of fun interactions-but the best one is when you go to where you first fell down-Asriel’s there to talk for a bit and foreshadow that “Marco” (the child who fell into the underground and mysteriously fell Ill out of nowhere) wasn’t always the nicest person. If you remember the tapes in the true lab, Asriel was talking to Marco about not liking this plan anymore. Marco wanted Asriel to take his SOUL. I’ll leave it up to you to wonder why…

@@Sojorlos The track that plays during Asriel’s post-fight dialogue where he apologizes to Frisk is called “His Theme” in the game soundtrack. Loved the video, easily been my most anticipated playthrough to watch for a long time. Great to see the impact this beautiful game and it's OST had on you ❤

OOOH, THE DAY HAS COME!! Edit: Thanks Marco, for doing this again... after all the negativity at the beginning (since the Undertale community can be quite toxic) I really didn't think you'd actually play the pacifist route. It was a ginormous joy watching you play through this and seeing your live reactions though. I remember this game coming out. I was in England at the time, now I am in Germany and the songs, themes and characters of this game awaken so many different emotions and nostalgia. It's crazy to think, that 2015 is already 8 years ago. But look at us now. We'll show them all what we can do.

This series was immensely satisfying. I'm so glad you saw it through to the end. I saw someone on the previous video saying your out-of-context music analysis was better than your analysis during the playthrough, and in a way I even kind of agree with that, but to me that's like saying the 2nd scene of a 3-act play is the "best part". It may be true, but there's plenty of other parts that are also great! And the parts all work together to create an experience that's much better than any 1 of them could ever be on its own! So thank you, again, for *every part* of this series, both the out-of-context music reactions *and* the playthrough.

Do you understand now, what love means what determination really means have you let it change you for the better, this is what I live for that feeling this game saved me and I’ll never forget that emotion, don’t forget that tug on your heart and let it push you to greater things

The pure joy in your expression at 8:00 was honestly beautiful to see, dude. I was hoping you'd have that "aha" moment after liking the Reprise so much during your soundtrack stream!

When I as an edgy 15 year old, I was obsessed with sans and megalovania, and was a stupid idiot about it, but now? Now that I am 19, the absolute sadness, that is Toriel, Asgore, Asriel and Chara's story, absolutely broke me when I replayed. Especially since my own family is kinda splitting up now. Undertale and it's soundtrack make me cry everytime and especially now. However it is such a help during this time and I love it. Thanks for the playthrough. If I may, another game I think you may like is Last of Us

Undertale to me has one of the comparatively biggest third acts in video game history. I think that's really important as it makes everything feel fully resolved emotionally.

In addition to this whole series I loved your analysis of the whole game along with including your personal experiences/struggles, I almost forgot how emotionally powerful this experience was. Thank you!

This was an absolute pleasure to watch all the way through. I remember seeing one of your older playthrough vids before you took them down, so it was really nice to see these pop up one by one. Also, this is an insanely small touch that I only noticed last year, but ever since I found out about it it's become one of my favorites - non-boss Asriel actually has two different front-facing sprites. The one you see at 16:47 is the first, but when you see him at 49:52, before the Special Thanks... he's got a bigger, more-genuine smile, and he's got a little sparkle in his eyes.

Undertale, a simple pixel indie game that made many grown-up men cry. "I really understand why this game means so much to so many people" is honestly all I was hoping to hear by the end of this playthrough. Also, the fact that you won't play genocide is probably for the best, as... no offense, I doubt you'll be able to pass the bosses there without being really frustrated, and it's not what Undertale is about. It would be cool if maybe sometime in the distant future you could react to it... like to the video? Because it has lots of new music and gives off completely different vibes. I think it could be interesting. Also *SPOILER ALERT, I GUESS?* Since the resets in this game are canon, it means that by not playing genocide, you'll leave all the characters in the game (minus Asriel) with their happy ending, without putting them through the horrors.

Beautifully done my dude. this game is a master class in using music to elicit emotions and it was obvious you were feeling that. Years later a single bar from half these songs can take me to a state of mind in an instant, thanks for letting me relive it vicariously with some additional musical context lol.

What a truly, truly special game and story. And at least half of it is Toby’s incredible composition. There’s a video by LL Game Shows as well as a series by Media Motifs that points out every appearance of various musical themes throughout the soundtrack if you’re interested in that, I recommend it I think it’s cool. Really though, what a special and profoundly moving experience, and all made by one guy with a kickstarter who just really liked earthbound. Small games like this and Omori are truly incredible and deeply emotional no matter how simple they may seem.
