Great review, Spite. I'm also a reviewer but I bought mine with my own money. Not saying that's good or bad in terms of review efficacy. I'd gladly have accepted a review model but I don't have enough clout. I bought one from the UK (BKS made to measure) and they shipped it to Mongolia for me, where I live. I've had it for 3 months. BKS also shipped out 2 new red top canisters for free because the blue tops were recalled by A*. Now I have 6 canisters, but 2 are questionable, so I'll only use those for lab testing. I've had 6 low-speed tip-over type falls and no deployments. Since you only get 4 deployments before the ACU supposedly tells you to have the unit serviced by A* (or a certified repair facility), I'm glad it doesn't deploy unless you need it. Forearm straps are easy enough to add. I'd also like some flank armour (like the V3). The airbag doesn't cover the flanks but rocks on side falls might find that gap. That could be offered as an accessory. I suspect A* wanted to keep the weight down. My L/XL already weighs 3.6kg. For comparison my Leatt 5.5 shirt (XL) weighs 3kg. So the TAOR's 3.6kg is quite reasonable considering it has the airbag and 2 canisters. I also replaced the A* shoulder and elbow protectors. They are pretty awful in terms of protection and comfort, so I put some Knox Microlock level 2 pads in there. There's room for most typical sized pads in the pockets.

I have been riding with one for about four months. It has surprised me how comfortable it is. Yes, it's hot to wear when the temps get higher than low 80's, but what isn't? No deployments on washouts so far. I have to trust A-stars that it works when needed. The only negative is I don't have a jacket that fits over it but my rain gear still does. I wear a jersey over it to keep the bug guts off it.

I had a bad high side wearing one of these two weeks ago on my 690. I am at home with a totaled bike, shattered scapula, broken elbow, and grade 5 AC separation. I’m convinced I’d be much worse off if not for the tech air. None of my EMTs or surgeon can believe I didn’t break any ribs, collarbone, or worse given the other injuries. I flew at least 10 feet vertically and landed 20 feet in front of the bike, upside down and headfirst. Damn straight I’m never riding without an airbag again. The only downside is the overconfidence it might give you.

Great gear for off road but it's not made for street rides as is. I've asked alpinestar directly and they told me that this airbag is not abrasion resistant (the inflatable part would not resist a slide on concrete) so for street rides it's design to be worn under a motocycle jacket. Ride safe.

A good base layer spandex of some kind should help absorb a lot of sweat and prevent any possible chafing/irritation. I use a base layer on any long ride I do for these reasons, and the sweat absorption in the Texas summer means more effective cooling as the ride goes on. I have no doubt about the safety claims, but what is it like to wear when it's hot? I've found that the protection riders wear is inversely proportional to the ambient temperature. And with summer just around the corner for us Aussies there are plenty of days where it's uncomfortably hot to wear even a mesh jacket. I'm concerned that it's an expensive piece of safety equipment that might spend most of its time being left at home during peak riding season.

Look at the bladder sections and pockets that holds them, this is not like the street Air 5 vest. It also won't give you enough abrasion resistence for street as you rode it on. Not your fault, look closely at the bladders of both rigs. Agreed the missing elbow straps, belt, and side panels like the Bionic v3 has is just not good enough for this price point. I'm using my air 5 when going offroad for now. This seems rushed to market, imo. $170 for canisters is high.

Oh my god YES! The canisters are impossible to get. Like wtf? Also, I understand TSA not knowing what to do, though they should be familiar with compressed gas canisters...which I don't think are actually allowed? Southwest should have offered to mail them for you at least. Customer service is basically dead though, so what can you do? If you want to bring stuff through security, less information is more. Describe what you're bringing in terms of a category the airport staff is familiar with. No one wants the liability of letting something unusual through and having it cause an incident. Not sure why they would give you the option of choosing the canisters or the jacket beyond having no idea what to do and feeling compelled to do something.
