Bay Area riding in a nutshell; ride during off peak times, climb near vertical fire roads/doubletrack, take in the spectacular views, perform a death defying descent on hard-packed hiking/cow trails that don’t flow, say to yourself, ‘Well, at least the view was worth it! I’ll never ride that again…’, then get stuck in hellish traffic on the way home because you failed to factor that in… Love what you’re doing Brian! Hope to ride with you up at Everstoke sometime 🤙🏻

I grew up in Novato hiking and riding horses all over what used to be open space. I love rediscovering the trails on my EMTB. The fight between equestrians, hikers and bikers has been never ending. We are always doing trail maintenance on our rides: bucking up downed trees, picking up trash-much of it dog poop bags. We are members of Redwood Trail Alliance a fabulous group of trail users and advocates who educate, build and maintain trails. There should be harmony and respect among all who use the trails...

Good to see you out there Brian. You’re right about Ponti. They tried to make it flow but it really isn’t as there are trail features where you have to check your speed. You would’ve loved the original Ponti though before it was removed to build the new trail. We were riding it in the late 1990’s on hardtails like Yokota Yosemites, Rockhoppers, and WTB Phoenix’s. It was enduro before enduro was a thing. Even some riders with full suspension would be hard pressed to clean it back then. Fast, tight, steep, off camber, and loose. It was only ridden by those in the know and willing to earn their trail cred. by pedaling up Chicken Shack to access it. Still, I can’t complain much having a trail I can access the ridge with right out my front door. Thanks for checking it out and I might suggest Solstice and Tamarancho in the future.

Great vid and agreed on advocacy and volunteering out here in the Bay Area for mtb trails. It really can make a huge difference. Briones is another place where they are piloting some trail usage which is a step in the right direction making some of the previous unsanctioned trails bike legal. Good thinking on riding coastal in the early am or late pm then hitting Stinson for some ocean cooldown! ✌🏼

I bought my first mountain bike in 1979 and you are riding where I lived then. That was known as The Big rock ridge road climbing to 1887' . In the beginning we would ride ALL the trails and fire roads in Marin, then soon the hikers and horses won, No single track and fire roads with 15 mph limit.
@MarkJolley2 жыл бұрын
I hope this doesn't come off too negative, but it's amazing how bad the trails are in the birthplace, or nearby, of mountain biking. I've ridden a fair amount around the Bay area and, although there are really great sections, like Braille, as a whole the trails aren't that great, aren't that plentiful, and lots are "illegal". Utah trails, southern and northern, are worlds better aside from having winter months where they aren't rideable in the north. There are hundreds and hundreds of miles of trails, maybe thousands.
@dudeonbike8002 жыл бұрын
One of life's many ironies or paradoxes. It's a matter of population density in Marin and other California locations. In Utah you have the benefit of so much more open space. In Marin and elsewhere, you have too many people using too little space.

It went together easily in less than an hour. kzbin.infoUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L Make sure the front fork is forward or the pedals will hit the front tire. Tires are both a little soft so it needs air before I ride it. The rear wheel didn't come with a clamp regular bolts hold it on. The front had the clamp. No scratches out of box. Rims are a little off with a slight wobble. They could have spent more time with the spoke tool fixing the run out. So far out of the box I'm happy with it. I did replace the pedals with a nice aftermarket set. After riding it a bit my A$$ is a bit sore so I ordered another seat. Overall I'm nearly 60 and didn't ride a bike in 30 years. I like my new 29" Schwinn. It will be used for casual rides with my friend.

Ponti is ok, it's really a slog climb for not a lot of payoff. Sometimes I ride chicken shack fire road to get to the top, and it's a beast of a climb. I should ride Ponti up and the little single track, off to the side, down chicken shack. The fire roads up there are just steep and gnarly though. Ponti is fast in sections... but it doesn't really sustain. It's like a trail you can take your kids on, except it is too steep.
