For those of you that may be thinking about A Year to Volunteer, don't think any longer, just do it, it's a great time!! Yes I found out about them through Today is Someday or at the time You Me and the RV. Hey to Phil and Shar it was fun working with you in Grand Haven, maybe I can fit in another one when we go full time in October. Keep the good stuff coming Phil and Stacy.

Wife and I just completed 3 months Camp Host at Killens Pond SP Felton, Delaware. Yes we cleaned but it was so rewarding in the experience we got. We met lots of great people (other Rvs and park employees) and swapped lots of stories around the campfires. Not to mention we lost weight. Yes, we will do more and great to see this Y2V as I will now look into it.

Whoever is scraping paint off the old museum make sure you have an N95 mask on as most old paint has lead in it. A lot of old buildings have asbestos in many of the building materials so same thing on wearing safety equipment.

Parks have money and budgets to do this. It's up to those in charge if they do it. If they do not spend the money, then budget is cut. Where are they spending the money?
@ayeartovolunteer
@ayeartovolunteer Жыл бұрын
Hi @EXTEZZEE - Hey, thanks for commenting and we'd love to explain from our perspective. Oh, we wish it was as simple as poor fiscal management, but we've learned that it's just not the case. In reality, many park systems self-fund. In which case, they share their revenue across all the parks and funding gets tighter for everyone, equally. When they do receive a state budget, it's often one of the lowest-priority line items for the state, so when times are tight, they lose it. The biggest hit parks face though is available manpower. There's simply not enough to go around and they're overwhelmed. No one ever works in parks to make money, they do it for the love of the job and those folks are few and far between. This is why just about every park relies on a healthy volunteer program (park, admin, and camp hosting, etc) and friends groups who raise money and try to help run and maintain the park. During the pandemic, parks were overrun by campers. This taxed their maintenance needs and the damage from bad campers to their infrastructure, these parks were doing everything they could just to get by. Enter Y2V!! We are so happy we found this awesome niche to lend them a helping hand where they really need it most....to tackle big ticket items off of their to-do list with folks who just want to get their hands dirty and help. Free work by people who love to do it. A total win-win! 😀

I am fine nomads helping out, building community, strengthening family, giving back, etc.; not only is it a great thing, its a noble thing. What I am not okay with is when the recipient is, directly or indirectly, a: (a) governmental entity (can tax or fee, to raise funds) (b) for profit corporation (working for free for a for-profit, is a "tax" on the poor and a gift to the rich (c) non-tax paying entity with bloated boards and overpaid management (taxpayer supported by virtue of tax status, not enough money goes to mission)
@ayeartovolunteer
@ayeartovolunteer Жыл бұрын
Hi! Thanks so much for commenting. Just to answer a couple of your observations and where we fit! We opted to help state park systems because many have to self-generate their own revenue or receive limited funding from the state's general fund and we RVers use and abuse them. We noticed quickly that just about all of the state park systems we've assisted are underfunded, understaffed, and overworked - irrespective of how their states support them. So, we decided to help and it is working so well. Think of it as RVers thanking them for giving us great places to visit and taking care of our precious resources while they manage the day-to-day management of their parks. They need so much more help. For the nonprofits we support (we never work with private for-profit entities), all are small, do amazing things to improve our society, but are likewise underfunded and overworked. At just about every one we've helped, the founder/director doesn't receive a paycheck. It's the small overlooked ones we love to help! Thanks so much for commenting and hope to see you out there on the road! Phil & Shar

It's a shame the donations goes to items being placed at each location (lumber, paint, etc) instead of things to make the jobs easier and can be used again (tools, etc)
@ayeartovolunteer
@ayeartovolunteer Жыл бұрын
Hi Jerry - most of us bring our own tools and the organizations we help have tools and shops so we really don't have much need there. Occasionally, we'll help them with a small tool here and there although it's the supplies that are the most needed and where we can really do the most good. Ask any Y2Ver and you'll hear that Shar is great and making sure we reuse everything we can and leave it for them when we head out (brushes, trays, etc). 😃
