I wish I knew these BEFORE getting a Chihuahua

The video was on point. Pet steps are mandatory. My second chihuahua became overprotective of me. Every time people got near me or touched me, he would go into protective mode. I would have to leave him on a leash at the vet. Once I was out of the room, he became a whole different pup. I was the problem, when he was a pup, I was very depressed over a break-up. I have owned five chihuahuas. Although I love all dog breeds, I cannot imagine owning anything other than a chihuahua. Train, train, train. My advice is to go down to their level to train them, at least at the start. :)

i love my chihuahua he is awesome carried him everywhere as a puppy and he is friendly to any and all ages of people he doesn't care about race creed or religion either he is an all-around lover boy

This is why we love them, Divas - they are the best. Some owners though, tease them, and encourage it - you're right, and thats not cool for the dog when you tell it off. confusing.

Unfortunately, my chihuahua was my first dog so I failed in training her. I socialized her early, but she grew up during a lock down so things were different. I had to leave her on her own at the vets multiple times, when she never got the chance to get used to the visits. She also had to be transferred by cargo without us knowing beforehand. It makes me sad, as much as I'm trying to fix things, she is very fearful of new people and other animals...

I think your chihuahua thinks she needs to protect you. Perhaps leaving her favorite treats with the vet will help.

@Fatima-bi2sm we've tried that, she won't eat or drink anything if I'm not there. She is very protective indeed, although I try to show her that everything is okay and that there is no threat
