Thank you Luke for all of the videos that you put out. I’ve been gardening for years yet still learn something from all your videos. I have questions about some of the terms that you used today. 1. Bi-annuals - I dont often grow them but have always been curious, will they survive beyond 2 years? 2. I always try to buy heirloom seeds. Your definitions got me wondering - how stable are hybrid seeds vs open pollinated? Should I expect to pay the same price for say a hybrid bean seed, an open pollinated bean seed & an heirloom bean seed? Why would one want to buy anything but heirloom seeds? 3. What is the difference between an “improved” seed vs hybrid, O.P. & heirloom? 4. I was going to ask you to expand on why GMO seeds aren’t available to home gardeners but I see in the comments that there are now GMO seeds becoming available. I would love to hear more about that as well. Thanks again!

I live in a zone 9a desert in California. Our summer temps reach well over 100 degrees for many days at a time. I was told I could cover my garden beds with a 40 percent shade cloth to reduce temperatures to keep my tomatoes producing this year. Is this true? Is this a partial shade thing? I had such high hopes. If not I guess it is short harvest plants and breaks in planting times.

Jess is absolutely right. The GMO Purple Tomato is now on sale for the public. It is a Purple Snapdragon with their gene spliced and combined with a tomato. It is a completely purple cherry tomato, and it is called, "Purple tomato.". I checked it out and the company that created it is selling it to the public. Baker Creek also has a completely purple tomato that is non-GMO but only a handful of people were able to buy it, so right now it is unavailable. People need to know the difference.

Great video as always and I learned something new about the succession planting symbol. :) I have a question that maybe someone could answer. I'm confused about days to maturity. I always thought that was from germination to harvest, but recently I've seen information that it is actually days from transplant to harvest. If that's true, how does it help to grow, say, peppers indoors if it doesn't actually help get a jump on the season? This year will be my first time starting seeds and I'm a little overwhelmed trying to figure out all the timing!

I start my peppers and tomatoes 45-60 days before my estimated last frost date in my area so they are ready to go into the ground when it's safe. I use a thermostat controlled heat mat and 4' lighting tubes (to prevent legginess) while bottom watering them in 10x20 trays.

Regarding days to maturity, is it considered day 1 when you plant a starter plant? I’ve heard it is, and I’m confused why it’s “a head start” when planting a starter compared to a seed if they still have the same days to maturity.

I believe so. Generally it takes 4 weeks to develop a little seeding that gets up potted to a larger pot for another 4 weeks, then gets transplanted into the outdoor bed. Or, just direct seed after all danger of frost. Direct seeding is way easier.

Seed prep is the thing that always seems to be lacking (and therefore the most confusing). Not sure if that's because it isn't needed (in which case much of what you see online isn't true) or because the industry uniformly decided not to bother. I've seen all sorts of things from scarification to cold stratification recommended for various seeds online... I've never seen a seed packet yet that indicates if it is needed or not though.
@PatienceLove8 ай бұрын
I agree! I think that’s actually one of the most important details that need to be mentioned on packets. A new gardener would believed they failed or did something wrong, when they never knew to scarify/stratify the seed. I had to do my own research with this concerning herbs & flowers. I shared seeds with someone and made sure to mention, because I didn’t want them to think the seeds were bad.
@cathydavis92598 ай бұрын
How do we know how many seeds are in each package? That would be helpful to know how many packages I need to buy. What about germination rate? Does the package ever say what percent is expected to germinate? How about the soil pH? I know you have videos on which plants like more or less acid? Is that on the package? Is this information on your seed packages or do you have something I could purchase with information?
@ursamajor19368 ай бұрын
Unless it's stated on the seed pack they usually sell by gram weight. Number of seeds in a gram is dependent upon the size of the seed. Or, you can buy a pack and count them.

For biennial flowers.. do you need to buy new seeds every two years or will they just not flower the next year? In other words..do they only last for 2 years and that's it?
@ursamajor19368 ай бұрын
Biennial flowers die permanently after going to seed.
@thechrononaut18 ай бұрын
Biennials will establish the first year, over winter, and flower the following year before dying. That is to say, if you plant an onion you got at the grocery store, you will grow an onion plant, but you will not grow "an onion." Biennial flowers (which is what an Onion is, really) would behave the same way.
