I am in 9a and direct sow everything outside. Just sowed seeds yesterday! When I pull my sweet potatoes in about 3 wks, I will sow seeds for brassicas and root crops in that space. If we get cold temps, I cover the plants.

I direct seed, but start seeds in trays at the same time. If anything doesn't germinate or dies before maturity I use one from the trays to replace it without losing time. Then every 2-3 weeks I start more seeds adding different varieties and plants that may need more temperature chang ein order to thrive

Great subject! I started all my seeds outside in trays this year and it has been the best decision I could have made. They just took off whereas when I tried growing inside last year it did not fare well. I live in FL as well but in 10b zone.

I’ve noticed the same. Seedling tend to love our heat.

I live south of Sylacauga, AL in the country. The weather goes from one extreme to the other quickly, making fall planning difficult. It is typically late September, or the beginning of October before seasonal temperatures are cool enough for seed germination. That leaves two to five weeks before the first frost. Last years first frost was a hard freeze on Nov 2nd, 24F. Using shade cloth, and frequent watering is essential. In the fall, direct sowing works best with me. Heat is a bigger issue than cold, and sometimes I have issues with bolting. Yeah, bolting in October. I got an early start this year, and am now having to deal with temps in the 90s, about a ten-day heat wave. Then it cools again starting next Friday. Come winter, it is the opposite. I need to get an early start, and harvest before the summer heat comes. Tomatoes don’t do well above 95F. They burn up! So, I start inside, starting in January, using heat mats, temperature regulators, and suspended grow lights. As soon as the seeds germinate, I move them outside as long as it is above 35F, and bring them inside at night. That way, there is no hardening off. I have to up pot two times before planting them in the ground around April 10th. Cool season crops, mustard, chard, Asian greens, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, etc. are transplanted into the garden around Feb 20th. The hardest freezes are usually over, but there are still frost days. Then again, I’ve seen it snow on Mother’s Day. I’ve also seen it snow as early as Oct 13th.

I live in Florida zone 9B. My pepper plants are now 2 years old. they've been in the same 3 gallon fabric pots the entire time. They easily survive the "winter" here in Florida. My Tomato plant was 12 feet tall before it died from the summer heat and bugs. I now have several baby tomato plants growing in the same pot that are from rotten tomatoes that fell down. The biggest problems you will face in Florida are bugs, mildew/mold and summer heat. Tomatoes can not handle full sun in Florida. They will get fried. You need shade cloth or grow them in a shaded area. Bell peppers also suffer in full Florida sun. Don't even try to grow corn in the summer. The bugs will annihilate it. Grow your corn in the winter or very early spring. Now would be a good time to start planting. 9-21-24 because our rainy season is basically over with. It hasn't rained in 2 weeks now. Normally we get monsoon rainstorms every day during the summer.

You must live far north then, here in So Flo it's been raining DAILY! Anything from storms to little showers 2-4 times a day! This has been the "rainniest" summer ever!!💔

The tomatoes can handle full sun, they just require a lot more water to survive the direct sun. Peppers can handle the direct sun if you make sure the roots are fully shaded. I put my peppers 3 or 4 inches apart and up against other plants so the soil never really gets hot....kind of treat them like clematis

@@rootelation486 not in the area I live at in Florida. Tomatoes get roasted. It doesn't matter how much water they get. I have automatic watering system, I've grown them hydroponically (they literally sit in water 24/7) does not matter. The humidity, heat, and bugs eventually kill them. Usually mealybugs, aphids and caterpillars. Maybe if we didn't have so many bugs they might survive. I didn't get even 1 bell pepper this year because of the constant bugs attacking my plants. I check my plants every single day. Sometimes multiple times per day and the bug pressure is out of control here in Florida.

Newish subscriber, but a 20yr gardener. Just throwing out a thought, but would you believe there are KZbinrs (and others) who for years regularly transplant the things you're saying can't be transplanted? Sometimes rules are made to be broken, and if there's a will, there's a way! 😄 Transplanting potatoes - *Home Grown Veg* (calls it a 'fast start' potato) - he's been doing that for 3-4 years and it actually works - and he's doing it in containers too. Transplanting corn, beets, radishes - *Bubblebeet* - he's been doing this for 6-7yrs now. He pre-sprouts the seeds using the paper towel/baggie method, then he transplants them into seedling pots or directly in the ground Transplanting peas - *The Rusted Garden (Gary P)* - I first saw him do this over 10yrs ago in styrofoam cups. Since he's in a colder climate, he transplants peas to get a faster harvest once the weather is suitable. Transplanting squash, cucumbers - *Home Depot, Lowe's, Walmart, etc* - they regularly sell those transplants, so somebody's having success with them somewhere lol 😄... I guess for newbies, it's good to let them know what the established wisdom is for transplanting and direct sowing. I've seen people try to transplant carrots, and I think the only one that was somewhat successful with it was Home Grown Veg, and I think he pre-sprouted those seeds and then planted them. I will have to go back and check that, but I believe it was him that did that experiment. I've even seen someone pre-sprout garlic cloves in a baggie with seed starting mix in their refrigerator, then planted it out in the spring and got a really good harvest. I commented on that person's page that I was going to try that this year when I get my garlic lol. 😄 I'm in zone 8b in TX and I have a patio garden, so I'm growing in containers. Loving the videos and your lovely garden! Keep up the great work! ☺👍

I think there are NO rules because things in the garden happen organically, also the conditions vary from place to place even within your own garden. So, it always involve observation, experimenting and learning. That's why I love it! Hope your garden blooms for you always❤🪻🦋

Toilet paper tubes is a great idea, but in my mind they are too sturdy. I fold newspaper into seedling pots, origami style (search KZbin for instructions). These seem flimsy, but once filled with soil and stacked next to each other in a tray, they're great. Do they start to deteriorate when you water your seedlings? Yes, but they last the few short weeks, from planting the seed to planting in the ground and that's all you need... There's less time for the roots to get through newspaper than the toilet paper tubes. Give a few a try. 💕🌞🌵😷
