I play intermediate piano music and now everything on the guitar is starting to make sense. Why? Because you, Tomo San, are making it easy to understand scales as they apply to both guitar and keyboard. I've only been playing the guitar for 8 weeks but it took me 4 weeks to get some calluses (laughing). I was lost playing "dots" (tablatures) for 4 weeks when I should have been learning the names of those chords and keys that those dots represented. By knowing music scales, I can not only visualize the scale in my mind but I can now see them on my guitar neck. Now comes the hard part (smiling) ... learning how to apply my scales across the neck (vertically) versus up and down the neck. OH and, yes, I can easily play Twinkle Twinkle Little Star on each string thanks to you. (chuckles) Play that funky music Tomo!

Don't use your eyes! Then you are not using your ears. Learn as if you are blind person, that's what I am trying to teach all my students.

For me if I'm ever having a hard time figuring out a melody I go to the single string approach. It's just easier to see the notes. Like on a piano. Plus you get those slides so it sounds really fluid.

Learning melodies, not just scales with a one string approach is a great way to build the foundation for chord melody work. Upright bass players put a lot of time into learning scales on one string (for classical songs that require slurs and for soloing in jazz). to its natural for them. On guitar it would seem very useful to work on scales on one string and then scales and scale fragments on 2 strings (especially scale fragments).

This is so true. I played guitar for years learning the shapes but it wasn't until i started playing with other people i relaised the need to learn by ear rather than shape. Transpose songs by ear as well rather than loom for lessons online as it helps lean develop ones ear.

I'm always amazed I can get elite level guitar lessons from a true master just sitting in my couch. I've already been playing around with this concept, and for some reason I find it easier to figure out melodies on one string. I usually figure something out by ear on one string then have to figure out how to play it in one position. I think it's because I can see the intervals between notes easier, like on a piano. But now I get to chew on this video for awhile and learn all this stuff and have it expanded on by you. Amazing. Thank you so much.

You're very welcome! Try not to memorize! You will get tired. Try a few different keys. Dorian Scale is just b3 b7 compare to Major Scale. So try play G Dorian. R M2 b3 4 5 M6 b7 R.... Simple... super slow! Stay each note 2-3 seconds with no rhythm. Enjoy the depth of colors intervals notes characters! I love this guitar! Thank you so much!

I've started doing this for a while. Very helpful. Learning to finger the scales in different ways and trying not to look as much as possible. Then two strings and their relationships. Fourths. Fifths. Play 4ths as a scale and then flatten or raise a note on one string or the other. Like on 7ths or 2nd positions in minor. Or elsewhere. Then the G and B string are their own little world. Over time blend the 3 strings I guess. Plenty of things to learn.

This is really great and encouraging. As a feel guitar player, with a formal saxaphone foundation, this is really help especially on the scales. This is the first time I’m hearing something other than major and minor and getting it. I’ve stumbled upon them here and there soloing over interesting chords and changes but never knew what it was called. When you said “playing from the heart rather than your eyes” it really hit me. I’ve always felt that and hearing someone from Berklee say it is freeing.

Glad it was helpful! Playing by feel is so important but when you are learning... need to use more brain than feel. Once you know what to do then switch from brain to your heart! You can play any scales, any arpeggios on One String / One Finger so you can think each note name/function/sound... Any solo you transcribe... you can analyze with your knowledge which is theory/harmony/ear training

I need to start doing this more in my practice sessions. I will say I do a solo in Come Together thats mostly on the D strings. Sounds really cool with the hammer on and pull offs

Generally, I work with guitar then I enjoy with guitar. This is my job so I have to practice super boring exercises first even 10 minutes everyday. Then I practice on playing. So when I plug my guitar... I just don't play anything. Just tune up... and practice techniques first. Then playing begins... Then try using more rhythm on your soloing. When to start? What's each phrase duration? Enough rests so that listener can digest your phrasing? Record yourself 3-5 minutes a day... this can improve you so much!

When i want to practise C for example at different string should i know for example at the G string that the A note is the 6th degree of Cmaj and start from there! In other words should i know the notes of the scale and in every string the first note of the scale that comes up and start from there to practice this approach in other string! Because this has a bit of memorization work especially if i must learn alot of keys like that! I tried to take the triads that i learned and start from r 3 5 and go up and down a little bit! I hope i wasnt to complicated and didn't tired you. Thanks for everything.

Master Tomo, I don't think many people understand why the C Scale first. I attempt to explain it with: It is all the White notes on a piano. One learns the C Scale then when learning the G Scale there is only on note different. Learn G Scale and you have 80% of most Rock Songs. Next is D Scale. Only 2 notes different from C Scale. So you see, C Scale is kinda like a Foundation. Learn the instrument - Learn the Notes. Then you can play most any song. Also, very important to Say the notes Out Loud. Be well...

That will make many guitarists stuck same level of playing for many years to come! Yes! Say each note C D E... then think & feel about each intervals. Then you are adding Ear Training aspect on C Major scale. A minor pentatonic shape is like eye exam!

Yes. They learn patterns then stuck for 30 years. They did that to us in Violin 50 years ago. They taught us to sight read. It caused very mechanical playing. Might as well been a robot. No emotion in it. Just play the written notes. That actually made it hard for me to learn guitar. I would read music and finger like a violin. I had to convert. I still arppegiate notes, not chords, like a violin. We didn't have chords. Just double stops. Take care Dear Friend. Be Well.

One of the big differences for me is that you are learning intervals and how they sound. I know lots of guitarists who think they are pretty hot lead players who would fall all over themselves just trying to play the melody of Happy Birthday or Mary Had A Little Lamb. Not because they don't know the melody. Everyone knows those melodies. But all they learned on guitar was physical patterns and not so much sounds. It's a great exercise to learn how to play a melody given a key or a starting note. To do this your ear must recognize intervals and your guitar playing must know how to find those intervals on the neck,

Tomo I have problems. I volunteered to teach beginners guitar at our local high school. The school ordered cheap guitars off Amazon. They are un playable. Terrible guitars.. I need guitars that kids can play. I dont think they can afford good guitars... Im sad. Any ideas to get guitars for underprivileged kids who can not afford guitars. Have you ever wondered why the "inventors" of written music decided on an 8 note scale instead of 7? Your 7 note scale would end at F instead of G. G would cease to exist. But you are still using the same amount of 1/2 steps to get through the scale. Do you suppose it was to make chord progressions easier to write? A 7 note scale would use all full steps. So, a 1/4/5 progression would become A-C#-E#. It would be a 1/3#/4# progression instead. Wierd things run through my head at 3 in the morning. Maybe it has something to do with the difference between written music for string and brass & woodwind instruments? Maybe there is a music theory genius out there that has a good explanation? 😮😮😮

I too enjoy music 1st. But after playing for 40+ years, my mildly arthritic fingers can only endure about 45 minutes of practice per day. That leaves a lot of excess day to ponder oddities....lol. I also find that my wife is considerably easier to get along with if I don't wake her up at 3am with my noodling. Sometimes I wake up with a song in my head that I have to let out before I can get back to sleep. In all serious though, it is a question that has intrigued me from childhood. I've had about 55 years to ponder that question but have not come to any conclusions. Obviously, it really doesn't matter. We have the system that we have. Nobody would dare try to introduce something different at this point. It's just one of those odd little thoughts that pop into my brain at quiet times... Thanks for your videos! I really enjoy seeing your passion for teaching others.

I’m not sure I can see the real value in this. Tomo is clearly a master guitarist though so who am I to say. I know this, I also know many scales In the usual 3 note per string l. I still get completely lost at times, I feel like I will never intuitively know all the notes like I do on a piano. Guitar is such a confusing instrument.

Thanks for sharing. That's one of common approaches and it's very useful for sequencing on top 1&2... but if you play all 3 notes from 6th string... then it makes patterns. Some people think one of those as Dorian scale... that's a little dangerous to learn that way. You can get stuck easily on same level of improvisation skill. Try 3 notes on One String... Go by steps... Do Re Mi, Re Mi Fa, Mi Fa So... or Do Mi Re Fa Mi So... etc. On One String ONLY! Try it! Nothing to lose! Everything is unknown until you really do it!

But I've learned more about how the guitar works this weekend than the entire previous two years. I just worked out major minor 3rds. semitinones.how do re mi works. Because he showed me a video. Maybe i was the right place at the right time? There's a difference between understanding the words he is saying and what they actually means. I think i understand why the guitar has 6 strings. I literally feel like a kid. It's been a long time since i really learned something. I must've thanked him 15 times this weekend. I never leave a video of confused or without learning something .
