My mother was born and raised in Glasgow and she might have married a kiwi, and wound up in New Zealand, but she never gave up her country she kept her citizenship and told her children all the stories about her city Glasgow. Years later she took my twin and I back to her Glasgow, but it had changed beyond recognition, it wasn't the place she had left all those years ago and she cried for leaving the city of her birth and went back to New Zealand. But inspite of it all she held fast to her citizenship and never gave it up. Stubborn people those Scots but history tells us they've been through a lot, and they never stop loving the land of their birth.

I'm sure this song would have an even greater poignancy to me were I actually from Scotland (I'm from the Oakland area in America) but I feel like these themes really transcend borders. There's a very universal feeling of "yeah, this town is a mean piece of shit place, but it's MY mean piece of shit place, and I wouldn't rather be from anywhere else". There will always be parts you don't like (like those special places to you getting torn down, something I'm very familiar with), but there's also the immense blessings to be alive and to be around those you come to know and love. Writing this from college, first long time away from home, and I hope everyone here feels like home is never too far away, at least in spirit.

I get the bus to Partick, then the subway to St. Enoch`s every day, i missed the place so much when i moved to the Borders that i rarely miss going there. Glasgow has changed beyond all recognition since the 70`s and 80`s BUT, the people haven`t. We still have that wee sarcastic sense of humour and great banter where ever you are in the city.

Was brought up listening to Billy Connolly's stories of the shipyards, he's always been very special to Scotland and Glaswegians in particular. Folk tend to forget that Billy Connolly wasn't just a comedian, also an actor and used to play in a band called the Humblebums with the brilliant Gerry Rafferty and Tam Harvey

This song reminds of my Uncle Johnny. He was such a beautiful soul. He played the accordion. He worked the coal mines in Glasgow. He died fairly young from black lung. This song is for you.

Oh I wish I was in Glasgow With some good old friends of mine, Some good old rough companions And some good old smooth red wine. We could talk about the old days And the old town's sad decline And drink to the boys on the road. Oh I was born in Glasgow Near the center of the town. I would take you there and show you But they've torn the building down, And when I think about it It always makes me frown They bulldozed it all to make a road. And that great old place I miss so much Has seen much better days, And still we talk about it As we go our separate ways. Oh but Glasgow gave me more Than it ever took away And prepared me for life on the road. And that great old place I miss so much Has seen much better days, And still we talk about it As we go our separate ways. Oh but Glasgow gave me more Than it ever took away And prepared me for life on the road. My granny was a cleaner, My grandad drove a tram, My father an engineer, Made me all I am. They have seen the city come and go, Still they give a damn. There's so much to learn along the road. And Glasgow gave me more Than it ever took away And prepared me for life on the road

I was born in the East End of Glasgow Meadowpark Street in Dennistoun don't remember much because i was that young but still remember a few things like Alexander Parade & the big park things like the Swallow cafe think there was a Italian ice cream shop can't remember. Only stayed there for P1 & P2 at ST Denis's before we moved away. No matter where i go in this world Glasgow will always have that little part in me

Glasgow is the greatest city in th world. The simple reason is the people. I am not a Glaswegian or even Scottish but I have some great friends from the East and West end of the city and visiting them in Glasgow was just a wonderful experience. To be feted just because I did not come from the city by all and sundry was just incredible. Glasgow does have a dark side we all know that but so do all cities. But I will tell you something when you are in Glasgow it is a special feeling and when you leave it is always sad.
