The wipers are vacuum operated - when you speed up the wipers will stop moving and when you are coasting the vacuum will run the wipers - might need to check for vacuum leak to the wipers
@adotintheshark4848

also, the vacuum is regulated by a second diaphragm on the fuel pump, believe it or not. That's so there isn't as much difference in wiper speeds when you step on the gas.

Vacuum wipers are pretty terrible at the best of times, but I had the vacuum motor rebuilt for mine by Ficken Wiper Service (no affiliation, just happy to pass on the name because he did a great job) and doing a rebuild on the fuel pump/vacuum pump made a significant difference to how well they work.

I LOVE 3-on-the-trees! I’m probably one of the youngest people who knows how to drive one (I’m 46 lol). My grandfather had a 1979 Ford F100 with a 300-6 and a 3-on-the-tree and a cousin of mine gave him a replacement at one point, an 82 or 83 F150 with a 3 on-the-tree which I think is the newest truck that I’ve ever seen with a 3-speed on the column. Apparently, GM was the last manufacturer to offer a 3-speed on the column in 1986 in the C/Ks. Ford dropped the 3-on-the-tree in their trucks a year earlier. For those that don’t know, it has the same shift pattern as a 3-speed on the floor if you moved it from the floor to the dash, then 90° toward the column. Here’s the shift pattern. R 2 Towards you | | Towards dash -- N -- | | 1 3 Shifter spring-loaded ---> this direction Rev- Pull shifter back towards you and up. It's really best to go into 1st before going into Reverse to prevent grinding so it's actually best to pull the shifter towards you and down (to 1st) then go straight up while holding back the shifter up into Reverse. 1st (from Neutral)- Pull shifter back towards you and down. 1st to 2nd- Move shifter up to Neutral, shifter will spring forward in Neutral towards 2nd and 3rd (towards dash) and then up to 2nd. (The natural position of the shifter in Neutral is between 2nd and 3rd.) 2nd to 3rd- Move shifter straight down from 2nd. The shifter is sprung towards 2nd/3rd so the only time you need to put pressure on the column shifter in Neutral is to get into 1st or Reverse. The natural position of the shifter in Neutral is between 2nd and 3rd so when you go from 1st to Neutral, the shifter will automatically go right between 2nd and 3rd. Usually 1st gear is not synchronized so wait until you stop to go into 1st if you’re downshifting. If you're in a hurry, you can go 2nd to 1st at about 5 mph or less, it'll grind just a little bit, be slow about it, but it shouldn't hurt the transmission too much. If you know how to drive a manual and have never driven a vehicle with a 3-on-the-tree, definitely try it sometime, it's a blast!!!!! The gearing has a wide power band, it feels a little lazy but it is awesome and soooooo relaxing. The throws are long, the shifts slow but they are each a pleasure and they force you to slow down a little bit which I think we can all use today. I’m soooooo happy you were finally able to get this Randy. It’s a shame it took so much back and forth with the seller to get it. I’m crazy-excited to see you got it and figured out how to drive the 3-on-the-tree. I tried to explain to you in one of your earlier videos how to drive it but I’m sure my comment was easily missed, you’re a popular KZbinr and it would be impossible to see everyone’s comments. I’m glad you were able to figure it out. I REALLY hope you keep this one for a while. Btw, those fender wheel covers are called fender skirts and they are crazy-cool!

That Pont trans is a non synchro first gear. Awful in traffic if you get bogged down below a certain speed. On mine, I used to call it being a "post turtle" (stuck). Meaning going too fast to downshift in to first, but not fast enough to keep from lugging the engine. Now that said, it might not be a design flaw, so much as a change in the driving habits of people, different street designs, and dissimilar cars of today.

Everyone is doing patina these days. I suspect that trend, while cheaper to pull off with just a clear coat, will eventually fade - no pun intended. You have a fine old car there in great running condition, and it deserves to have the chrome re-installed, if you can get it from the prior owner and to receive a proper paint job. I can't imagine many people these days know how to operate a 3-on-the-tree. I believe that the last vehicle sold with on was the 1986 GM C/Ks, Ford ended them a year earlier and I think even among people who know how to drive a manual transmission (we're a dying breed) only a small portion of them likely know how to drive a 3-on-the-tree. Granted, the shift pattern is like a 3-speed on the floor, moved up to the dash and 90 degrees to the column but even 3-speeds on the floor have not been produced in a very, very long time by the automakers. I figured Randy might not know when he first looked at this at auction, I told him how to in comments but he likely missed it because he does get so many comments. I am very happy he figured it out and I am sure that Santa could've helped him, that is if he didn't. He's old enough to know for sure. I'm probably one of the youngest people to know how to drive a 3-speed on the column and I am 46 and probably one of the few even in my age group that knows how. My grandfather had several of them , some I drove when I had my learner's permit and my stepdad had a few too. I'd actually love to buy one, I am always on the lookout for a 1965-1979 F100 or F150 with one in original shape. I haven't driven a 3-on-the-tree since my grandfather's blue 1979 F100 back in maybe 1991 or 1992 but I love driving them and desperately want one of my own.

@@brian5o I was wondering when the last three-on-the tree was made. Thanks for that info. I learned on my '52 Plymouth back in 1969. It's a simple H-pattern which was often diagrammed in owners manuals.

Randy, is there any way to get in contact with the former owner and ask him to sell you Crome For the Pontiac, maybe worth a try! She's totally worth putting the Crome back on after painting. It would make a big difference. Love the car!

Sweet deal for a runner! I believe that is a pipe holder up on the dash. Those old 3 on a tree shifters get a bit gummed up on the linkage tube going to the engine compartment. Some compressed air and light oil free’s them up nice. Love it!

3 on the tree is just a H pattern, 1st gear is a non synchro so do change into 1st unless your standing still. Put the extra money into finding the chrome work. I live the patina in my opinions I’d just keep it as is! Great work Randy Cheers Pat 🇦🇺

I believe the keys are original; I drove cars this old in my youth plus my 1963 Chevrolet Bel Air had the same type keys. Three on the tree was SO common then! This was really a deluxe car in the day and would truly be worthy of restoration!! Great find!

Hard to believe that you have never driven a 3 on the tree. I'm guessing first gear is not synchro so you cannot shift into first without stopping first, unless you want to crunch the gears. You also made a mistake calling the engine a flathead V8 - it's a flathead straight eight. It sounds just like I remember my uncle's '54 Chieftain sounding. Its amazing that everything seems to work, so the prior owner(s) spent a good deal of money keeping it sound mechanically. Definitely a great car. I doubt the keys are original, they look too shiny and are not worn enough but they are definitely older GM key stock. Deal or not? If you're happy, that's what counts. Oh by the way, at the time my uncle had the '54 Pontiac, my other uncle, his brother, had a '55 Bel Air. One day, by accident, they discovered that the keys were interchangeable. The keys to the Pontiac worked in the Chevy and vice versa. And, I say paint it and put the white walls on!

That reminds me of my mother's Olds. She and pop both had Oldsmobiles, his was stick, her's was a HydraMatic. One day, she got into somebody else's Olds - her keys worked in it - that was a stick. She didn't think anything of it, but realized when she opened the trunk what had happened! When she got back to that place, the owner of that car was sitting there waiting, as he did not know how to drive with an automatic.
