I Wore 5-Toe High Heels For A Week

Hello friends! The ugly fashion series is BACK! So sorry for the delay in uploading, we're just trying to get our operations situated in our new spot! Hopefully there will not be quite so long a wait for the next video!!
This week I am taking on another questionable fashion item, and testing out the Balenciaga x Vibram separated toe high heels! The internet was very unnerved when these bad boys hit the scene and though it's been a while since I took on an "ugly" piece of clothing, I felt like it was time to make a comeback. So I styled these bizarre shoes for a week to see what, if anything, I could glean about why they came to be.
Quick note -- I did include some pre-2020 footage, so anything you see inside of me in a store is from before 2020! Also, we made sure to take any sans-mask shots in very isolated area, with not another person in sight!

The problem with these is that the very concept of high heels is opposite to "5 toe" shoes. 5 toe shoes are all about being ergonomic and comfortable and don't care that they look dumb, but the very purpose of high heels is to look good at the cost of being uncomfortable.

As a wheelchair user you now have gotten the closest it is possible to get to my feelings on uneven surfaces without actually using wheels. Cobble stones are perhaps my greatest nemesis. Gravel is surprisingly fine, especially if I have my “dancing shoes” ie frog legs on.

Gravel is definitely more fine than i thought it would be but in a manual chair i do kinda feel like a dog on a tiled floor. Very aware of how precarious my position is. With a power chair it's great though, suspension forgives all sins 😂

A year ago I got a track chair and when I’m in that thing I feel like a beast. Playing around with wheelchair tech is great.

It’s actually really good to have your toes separated while walking. The heel hight is very bad but just generally having separated toes is good for your stance. Look into barefoot shoes to see the benefits

If you actually read scientific studies, you will see there are some benefits (running metabolic economy) some down sides (increased pain, injuries and inflammation) to minimalist shoes, but that all focuses on heel drop height. Personally, I’d err on the side of less injuries (cushioned shoes) than slightly faster running. There is absolutely no conclusive research on toe separation, and very little research at all on benefits for non runners. What is DEFINITELY true is that if you have any malformations in your skeleton or tendons, or if you are over weight, minimalist shoes can definitely be a risk.

Can also be good in the long run for stabilising arches. Yes, there are plenty of downsides, but there are benefits as well, same as wearing normal shoes

As a former running shoe salesperson: shoes like these (ones with very little to no cushion) need an adjustment period. They usually recommend not wearing them all the time right away cause our feet aren’t used to them. Add that to the fact that high heels are already terrible for you and it’s no wonder your feet were so sore!

I've used my old regular Vibrams for walking up the creek and you're right about the parts where the water leaks and it doesn't dry quickly either, neither the shoe nor your sock, even if you only wear them for the water part of your journey and put on regular hiking boots for the part that's on land and even if you bring a towel and dry your feet off thoroughly before putting dry socks and boots on. I got HUGE blister by walking two miles to the creek in my Keen hiking boots (highly recommend!), a mile both ways up and back down the creek in my old Vibrams, and then drying my feet off and putting on dry socks with my boots again and walking the 2 miles back home. The blisters got bad within a mile or less on my way home after hiking in the water, even though I dried my feet off with a microfiber towel and everything, so I was literally limping the last mile back. Still, walking in the creek with the Vibrams on was still much better than walking barefoot because the thin sole was still enough to keep me from really feel the pain whenever I happened to step on a little rock in the creek. I air-dried my feet for a while after that and I got new insoles for my hiking boots so that I usually don't get blisters when I go on that same hike. Oh and I should also mention that I hike with like an 80 lb backpack full of stuff because I want to go backpacking so I'm trying to condition for it. That would put the weight on my feet much closer to 300 lbs than it is to 200 lbs too, which puts more stress on my feet and my shoes than I would put on them just walking normally, although I'd still probably carry at least 10 lbs of water on that hike no matter what.

I own a pair of vibram shoes, got them while working at a summer camp for kids with disabilities. They were super useful for bathing the campers since we had to basically be dressed for swimming as we were in the showers too. They were also super helpful for doing activities on the lake (swimming, kayaking, sailing, etc). In certain settings they are a fantastic shoe but i don't found walking on rough terain to be the hardest aspect of them. If I i knew I I didnt need to go in the water I would just wear sandles because of how uncomfortable they are during prolonged use, could not begin to fathom how uncomfortable adding a 3" heel would make them. Some people love how they look, and i got the prettiest pair I could but they were still hideous, there's not getting away from that

Honestly? I think there's a point where you're just like "fuck it" and go for it. I was in an abusement park a few years ago in summer and after about an hour of feeling worried about being hot, fat and sweaty I jsut said "you know what, screw it.
