I decided to experiment with wearing modern fashion for an entire week! I've been wearing historical fashion every day for quite a while now, so wearing modern fashion feels very unfamiliar and strange to me. That's why I thought making this video would be the perfect opportunity to step a bit outside of my comfort zone.

Well, I actually liked your clothes the most in this order: 1.)day5 2.) day6 3.) day1 except those shoes :D I am guy whos favourite hobby is history, but I like to wear 2000s smart casual clothes, so shirts and jeans - also every office I worked in had the policy to wear smart casual clothes, so I fit right in I guess :D Its really interresting to hear someone elses persective such as you who wear exclusively historical clothes :) First time on your channel actually, what is maybe your most favorite top 10 historical clothes? :D

My great aunt died in around the time that I was born in 1957. I am told by my older cousin that she used to wear her Victorian dark dress. It hadn't torn in 57 years and so she could see no reason to update her fashion.

Admittedly it also takes work to curate a "modern" wardrobe that one feels comfortable in: I'd also feel a bit off wearing all recently-thrifted clothes for a week! It would be a bit like losing your luggage and having to wear a friend's clothes. Really does show how clothes are like a second skin! I wear a combo of modern and "weird" stuff (retro style, dirndls) but have never really matched a trend 100%, I think that pretty much everyone who rocks their look (vintage, historical or contemporary) has put in lots of effort and time. It's great you've found yours!

Very well said. I was thinking about how I used to get very upset with my mother's taste in conservative brightly colored preppy clothes for me, and what a relief it was to finally choose my own style once I got a job and could buy my own grungy, hippy, alternative taste in clothes. Our clothes are part skin, part armor, and part signage, to identify who we are to the world. Even when no one will see me, I like throwing on one of my whispy patterned boho kimono robes that help me feel more comfortable and confident.

youre thinking of solar punk!!! Its about fighting for community and nature and using our technological advantages to do it. most of the clothing is a mix of work clothes and ancestral clothing and most tend to lean towards natural fibers because of it

I think day five was also a banger, but it would have been better with the brown boots. I'm not a woman, so I don't understand why all of you insist on wearing such high-heeled footwear. I bought a pair of JK logging boots last year (bison leather), and it was a real adjustment for me. Yes, they are very comfortable now, but I don't wear them often since they're a pain to put on, so I can only wear them when the weather is right (imagine someone wearing logging boots with shorts), and I'm not going to be back home anytime soon. I'm also really surprised the brown boots leaked; they may need to be treated. Everyone should have a good pair of boots; I have too many.

I think one of my favorite things about this video is that you have shown the possibilities for unique fashion in second-hand shopping. The only recognizeably "modern" outfit you have here is the classic jeans and t-shirt, but you've even managed to give that your own flair without realizing it. If I saw you walking down the street in any of these outfits, I would think, wow, what a gorgeous, interesting woman. I honestly have never seen anyone pair things in the way you have with some of these outfits, and it's actually very inspiring. I love that you have found confidence in your style, but I think you should also give yourself credit for being a unique, interesting, and inspiring person even when you're out of your comfort zone.

I love the idea of trying the "normal" thing every now and then just to validate that one's current preferences really are ones one. In my opinion, however, I don't think most people would feel good in these outfits... they're not cohesive enough to really represent the experience of dressing in modern clothing 😬 I have an idea for a future video (or video series) that I think would be super fascinating to a large audience. 🤗 I think it would be really cool if you partnered with another Fashion KZbinr (maybe someone the same size as you?) who focuses on modern clothing or just has a completely different style than you, and do a closet exchange for two weeks. Each of you could build instructions for ~10 unique outfits, so that the other person could choose from those cohesive outfits for the first week, and then experiment with their own outfits after having learned from the first week. I think it would be particularly interesting to see which pieces each of you chose to re-wear, which you might have never chosen to wear, and why. The project could also be extended such that you each hold on to 7 pieces (your choice) of the other person's clothing for an additional week, and mix it with your own wardrobe. Doing such a trade would eliminate the need to buy anything (2 points for sustainability!) and expose each of your audiences to each other's platform. I think discussing your experiences with someone else (in comparison to just talking to the camera yourself) would also be really interesting as a viewer ☺ Having someone who is an expert in the other type of dressing to give you tips or advice would also be soooo helpful for troubleshooting outfits if you're struggling with negative feelings along the way as they could point you towards other options that you might feel more comfortable in, or help you see unique ways to style items that could make them feel more like you ☺

As another person who can't wear artificial fibre: it genuinely is VERY limiting if you are reliant on what's in the shops and can't sew your own clothes (which I do, of course). A good deal of my wardrobe still isn't very cohesive, either, although it's a lot better than it used to be.

I had similar feelings when my car that I had wrapped pink myself was in the shop and I had to drive a *normal* car. I felt so sad and dull. If anything it makes us extra happy to be ourselves again! Great video as usual!

Really, very few of us are ‘forced’ into modern clothes. Instead, we force ourselves, through fear of standing out. Embrace the fear, and you’ll be surprised at how positive most responses are. Be aware that people will be curious, may perceive you as being part of a religious minority, and possibly as somewhat eccentric, but your friends and workmates will soon take it for granted. Plus, since the cottage-core takeover of fashion, history bounding is borderline fashionable!

It's so weird to see you in modern clothes - you just have perfect aura for historical clothing haha. But it's good to try things for sure! I find wearing dresses easier for modern pieces - unfortunately I do need some modern clothes both for lack of historical clothes in my closet (I rather make them well and slowly than rushed and bad, and it's expensive) and because my historical clothes mainly don't suit my current job. It's nice to have some modern things for that, but I look forward to getting to being able to wear historical things all the time :)

I didn’t realise until listening to this that complex ptsd is why I feel so distressed when my clothes don’t fit or my outfit isn’t cohesive. Physically it feels like being forced to cover up at church events even though I’d followed the arbitrary dress code to a T! It triggered the emotions but not the memories so I hadn’t realised. I’m glad you’ve got the support you need to do this!!! It’s not easy! Thank you for talking about it and helping me realise, I think c-ptsd could also be why I feel compelled to follow certain trends. I don’t mind doing things differently to an extent but being forced to follow a religious dress code was very alienating! It’s strange to see you in modern clothes but how you styled them felt unique to you 💕 Day 2 is definitely something I’d wear, just with sneakers and most likely no makeup. I used to wear high ponytails a lot but I’d probably wear a claw clip these days 😊

I've never had to adhere to a religious dress code, but I share the same physical and psychological discomfort at wearing something forced on me, something I didn't choose; it's like a square peg shoved into a round hole. My parents were pretty strict (ALWAYS had to wear pantyhose, no matter how hot the weather or casual the occasion, couldn't even try something new with my makeup) and growing up I felt depersonalization at having to wear floral dresses or dresses from the senior section at Macy's (bc grandma clothes were guaranteed not to be "sexy"). For prom I desperately wanted a red dress bc the color suited my hair and complexion, but my mom was adamant I was "too young" to wear red. She also vetoed all the dresses I picked out. I ended up in a high collar, floor length, bubble gum pink poofy dress that exposed only my lower arms and was a size too big for me bc that's what she picked out. While most of my peers were in sleeveless, above-the-knee dresses. My actual style once I reached adulthood was much more funky and risk-taking. It's had several variations over the years, but has now evolved to "looks like I play bass in an all girl band" and occasionally "she might have gotten dressed in the dark after taking acid" (like my floor length, neon green tutu with a faux leather vest).

@@bossyboots5000 Yes that sounds so similar!!! The discomfort and depersonalisation are awful. The rules are all so ridiculous but so hurtful, I’m sorry you went through that. In my religion the rules weren’t clear (not that it helped when they were, my body was too curvy and my red hair didn’t help). Anyone could confront you based on their personal feelings. I firmly believe “modesty” is often a guise for sexual harassment. One week I could wear my shorts, the next week I was a slut for wearing them (I was 12). At 20 my clothes were fine but then a young man had a crush on me so suddenly they weren’t and the religious leaders came to rebuke me on his behalf 🤦🏼‍♀️ As if it was my problem! Do they still comment? All the people who shamed me when I was a girl don’t dare to now. As soon as I regained the confidence to stand up for myself again they became too scared to comment. It’s a bit disappointing tbh, I was ready to fight 😂 I know they’re just saying the same shit to someone else Also your style sounds so cool!!!! Mine is mostly basic, but I love crop tops now which I knew not to even ask to wear back then. I love beachy/mermaidy styles because they remind me of home

And my criticism was at least consistent, not based on the whims of what someone liked that week. So sorry you went through that. The idea that women's bodies "tempt" men says more about their view that men are weak and animalistic than it does about the woman. Such bs. And it promotes victim blaming and the excusing of sexual harassment and SA. Glad you made it through and have the confidence now to stand your ground, though sorry you didn't get to rumble lol. I bet you wanted to slap each and every person who shamed you. 😉 It doesn't sound like your church isn't a very welcoming place if that's what they focus on. Beachy mermaid is a fun, breezy style. I'm also diagnosed with cPTSD, and for me, clothes were definitely an outlet that facilitated change, and allowed me to move in some kind of direction, even if only in some small way. A small change, a meditate, a walk in the woods can be all I need when I begin to feel I'm stagnating and lingering in memory.

This is so interesting, I wouldn't say it was very stylish for modern standards. I would explain it as if someone got some vintage pieces but didn't style them correct. It looks vintage but off in a way. But also this makes a lot of sense, since knowing how to style your clothes correctly takes studying about the style you are imitating in detail. Like a business woman in the 80s wears different clothes than a mom in the countryside.

I love that this video came out while I'm getting ready to go out camping overnight. Why? Because I'm wearing a mix of early Medieval and modern tech/sports clothing. Medieval clothes are just SO versatile, so elegant, practical, comfortable, CLEAN. But also modern thermals are great when you're looking for something small, lightweight, but warm. Wool is just too heavy for a short trip. What I'm trying to say is that there are advantages to modern clothing, just not that many 🤣

When you’re wearing your historical clothes, you give off the quietly studious air of a very fresh-faced woman in her early 30’s who brooks no nonsense. That would be someone I would approach in a coffee shop, compliment your outfit, and invite myself to have a seat and chat. In your MODERN clothes, you look like a gawky 14 year old who got into her older sister’s closet and then snuck out of the house for a wild day out on the town. Even though you do look beautiful in modern makeup, it did nothing to erase that 14 y/o vibe. It might be my grandmotherly instinct, but you in historical fashion feels like a younger peer; In modern clothes, I feel like I’d have to offer to call your mother to come pick you up! Funny how MUCH of a difference it made, tho! I quite enjoyed seeing the contrast!

great video, really interesting experiment to see it done this way round which is obviously the reverse of what many others would be able to do! I find it very inspiring to hear you talk about clothes being able to feel like they're "you" so to say. "Pacific Northwest person from the 2010s" is SO on the nose haha!! 2010s nostalgia is definitely fashionable right now. A lot of what is trendy right now are call backs to bygone decades, meshing different eras together and still managing to make it look refreshing yet refined. The current fashion zeitgeist borrows a lot from the 50s/60s/70/80s. And of course, the 90s and early 2000s are HUGE these days, and have been for the past year or so. Naturally, the 2010s were next to come back around either for nostalgia's sake or purely for the memes. Been seeing a lot of stuff from the 2000s, namely, "y2k" and "McBling". Also lots of T-shirts under vests, skirts over pants, skinny scarves & layers, jorts/low rise jeans, off shoulder tops etc. recently. From the 2010s, early 2010s scene/emo fashion and mid 2010s tumblr grunge fashion. A particularly popular trend of recent seasons has been "Office Siren/Geek Chic" (derived from 2000s corporate geek fashion and partially from 2010s business casual/hipster fashion). All of the above is typically what's mainstream at the moment, there are a PLETHORA of other aesthetics and subgroups to different "genres" of modern stylistic expression e.g. "gorpcore", "weirdcore", "old money/quiet luxury", "downtown girl", "athletic preppy", "western/boho cowboy", "balletcore", "princesscore", "clean girl", “minimal scandi”, "cottagecore", “mermaidcore/fairycore”, "coastal grandmother", "coquette/ultra feminine", “dark/light feminine”, "dark/light academia", "whimsigoth", "rockstar gf" - just to name a few! There are so many overly-romanticised niches. Trend cycles are so quick to changing these days, it's insane. I could go on and on about the anthropological aspect of modern fashion. As well as how the world of style aesthetics feels so asphyxiating. Being boxed into either one or the other. Never feeling your own sense of style, even with all of these aesthetics to choose from it's so hard to find one's own stylistic identity. And the ever changing trends to follow are so exhausting. Not even going to mention the overconsumption & fast fashion side of it, although there has been a booming interest over the years among the general public for thrifting and buying secondhand as well as focusing more on wearing natural/ethically sourced materials. Who knows how your sense of what is "me" will change in time. In my teens and twenties, I only felt comfortable in long skirts of a victorian/edwardian feel. Then I moved into more of a 1930s/40s look which also felt like me but also meant I could "pass" if you will at work. Weirdly now, I'm into very steamlined clothing with few fussy details. Wish I thought I'd be around long enough to see what you feel most at home with when you reach 60!

One thing, bras shouldn't be uncomfortable. It's like corsets in that way, but you need to find one that works for you. I love bras, literally almost never take them off because they're so comfortable. Though I do understand you might not do this challenge again ahah, just saying though, a bra that's right for you isn't uncomforable, but i do see how it can be kinda hard to find a correct one ♥♥

It's extremely difficult to actually find comfortable bras. Amongst my friends, I would say that only those who are so small as to not need them are comfortable. One fitter even told me that my back was abnormally broad and therefore no bra would ever fit comfortably

@@dawnmoriarty9347 understandable, I had bras before that were really painful before I found these that i have now :( I suspect custom made bras might be best way to go about these kinds of things considering how hard it can be to find one since there are so many types, and since nobody has the exact same measurements as the standardised sizes, that way they can suit the specific needs of the wearer and be tailored to fit them, but where does one even find someone who custom tailors bras unless you do it yourself… :( otherwise you kinda just have to rely on luck, and that sucks :/

+1! British brands are much better than American: Elomi, Freya, Panache... I'm much happier with than without one. They're little works of architecture. But not cheap! I can't say if cheap bras are uncomfortable, because they don't come in my size, but I did once try a bralette and it was a definite nope. Digging into my shoulders and everything. I haven't worn modern clothing in years and prefer late 18th and early 19th century fashion. My cousin is soon getting married and has brought us all matching suits, which I am anxious about. I felt depressed and incredibly stuffy, even restricted by the modern tailored fit when trying it on and don't get me started on the synthetic mixed fibres. I saw a video recently where they said if you want to try a new style but feel like you’re “wearing a costume” or it doesn’t feel like you, try to swap out pieces slowly. Swap your shoe style and wear that for a bit, then add pants to that until you’re comfy, then change your shirt style, then your accessories, etc until it feels cohesive and like yourself. I know that wouldn’t have worked for this video but for anyone wanting to try out a new style but it feels too “alien” to have an entirely new to you style outfit on maybe give this trick a try😊 Also 70€ for all those clothes and shoes is a steal where I am!! A single mass produced shirt is often 10€ second hand!

I mostly wear 1940s through 1960s and I’m not super strict about it either, but I just buy quality clothes that I like and they’re usually older. I also just don’t wear bras because I have small boobs, and I’m not gonna do it! Usually I’m wearing a slip. But seeing you in these outfits gave me such a sense of shock. Like I kind of forget how boring modern clothes are until I see someone who wears beautiful older styles wear them. I just find them so blah! It was interesting just to feel my own reactions. As a trans person, I really relate to this. Recently I've been wearing some of the feminine clothing I used to wear in high school. (Read: historical clothing!) It is nostalgic, and sometimes I like it and sometimes I don't. My clothing style has changed so much. It's true as you say, that what makes us feel like ourselves can change. This was interesting, but more of an internal journey than I was expecting. If you ever want to revisit this topic in another video, I'd be interested to hear if there were any elements of modern clothes that you did like. Was anything more practical for certain activities? Quicker to get dressed? Easier to wash? Location of pockets? Are there any design elements you might include in your historic outifts? Any historic elements that you really missed for practical reasons, such as an apron? It's also too bad that due to your allergies you didn't get to try any modern athletic shoes for hiking or long walks.

Things I loved about this video: 1) The fact that you almost had to find analogs for every outfit you wanted to put on highlighted just about how much modern fashion is made up of synthetics. None of it looked trendy, it looked timeless. And the fact that you wore it all un-ironed with all the little distress spots showing made everything well-lived-in and less sloppy than modest. 2) You absolutely seemed like an anthropologist, observing the local habits and maybe daring to try them out, to the best of an outsider's understanding. I have been diagnosed with Complex PTSD and what I learned from my experience is comfort is extremely important. You be you because we are all unique in our own way. For me it's a comfortable printed t, deep pocket pants ( the lower the pockets the less chance of wedge ) and a good sturdy belt. Besides jeans and a tshirt never goes out of style. 😊

However clothes are so much more than just 'looking good' they are an expression of who we are, and you seemed so much more comfortable in your historical garb. I have worn 'plain dress' (similar to what the Amish and Mennonites wear) for the last 17 years, recently i have included a few historical garments. Every now and then I am tempted to buy a pair of jeans and wear them to work on a 'casual dress' day, just to see the shock on everyone's face, but then i think of how uncomfortable jeans were and i chicken out.

It might be the bra that youre wearing, if it has an underwire, i definitely get it. I had to dig deep into what walmart had (it’s whats in my budget ) for something without underwire thats also unlined. It also clasps at the front. They are just the slightest bit too small, but they are the best transition for me to getting a corset whenever that will be.

I dunno…. I think that’s true for modern or historical clothing, in particular for the upper class. I mean think about the gorgeous, extremely ornate, beautiful dresses of the previous centuries. Way more decorated and stylized than most current casual clothing, which detracts less from the person, in my opinion. I love and am fascinated with historical dress, but a big reason for this fascination is because of its highly intricate, beautiful, 50+ hour (in some cases) workmanship.

How interesting! Re the leaky boots if they're leather just use shoe polish which will reseal them for a while. You can add a waterproof wax that will hold longer. Cheaper leather shoes tend not to be as waterproof as we'd like! I have a fab pair of thrifted ankle boots that yesterday announced I need to rewaterproof them! 😂

To combine sustainability & not have to have 7 different outfits, think about fine merino wool: tops, leggings, pants, etc. U can get a few tops (a long sleeve, a short sleeve or two), maybe a skirt & combine them into different looks or outfits. Great vid & u look awesome. My fave look was the top braid with the cowl neck top & button up over it.

I've watched many of your videos and enjoy seeing someone wear and reproduce historical fashions. With that said, I had a realization that would be worth mentioning. "Modern fashion" will at some point in the future be "historical". You even mentioned that one of the outfits you wore felt nostalgic. I suppose you could say that wearing modern fashion/style clothing is "historic", just in the sense that it is participating in the ongoing creation of history. You could even incorporate current fashion into your historical repertoire. Just like you look into fashion trends and methods of "manufacture" of historical clothing, do those things for current and more recent "historic" fashions. I hope this all makes sense. I suppose, I'm simply wanting to point out, that though you may not be used to wearing currently (modern historical) fashionable clothing (for various reasons) it is still historical. I hope that comforts you about wearing modern clothing.

Just chiming in to say: there's a science behind the modern bra. It lifts and supports (not separates) from underneath, very like a corset or stays. A well-fitted bra shouldn't jab or poke you anywhere, and your whole boob should fit in the cup without being squashed or spilling over anywhere. You should be able to take the straps off and move around a bit without it falling off! You don't need to "add 4/5" to find your correct size (that's leftover from the 1920s and 1930s, when elastics were not as stretchy) - US and UK sizes are just your underbust measurement in inches, rounded to the nearest even number, and adjusted for your personal comfort; European sizes are your tight underbust measurement in cm, rounded to the nearest multiple of 5 (keep in mind that many of these run slightly smaller than UK/US brands, especially Polish!) Cup size is a description of the volume ratio, so a 32B and a 36B are not the same size! The same volume can be found in "sister-sizes", which are grouped diagonally on the size chart. You can find your sister-sizes by increasing the band size by 1 and decreasing the cup size 1 letter, or the inverse, decrease the band size by 1 and increase the cup size 1 letter. This means that 36B, 34C, and 32D all share the same cup volume, so if your band is too tight in a 32D but the cups fit, you can probably get a better fit with a 34C. Shape also counts. If you spill out the middle of plunge styles, try a balconette. If a balconette cuts you off on top, try a half-cup. Not every style is suited to every boob!

This was an interesting experiment. I can tell just from how you carry yourself that you are much more comfortable in the lovely garments you've made. That linen shirt was a good find though. I love a good linen garment. I also enjoy making my own clothing, but end up wearing a fair amount of more modern clothing in my day to day life, especially at work. I do find I tend to gravitate towards styles more in line with historybounding, vintage, or alternative fashions when given the option, but I've also been known to wear my Norse medieval garb out in public on occasion.

Congrats on getting through this, what an interesting experiment! I wear bras only when strictly necessary then off they come. For me, anything fancier than yoga pants ir sweatpants ad atshirt, or one of my flannel housedresses, I feel like I'm playing dress-up and there's too much I have to keep track of, don't spill on the nice shirt, don't smudge your makeup by touching your face, don't catch the skirt on stuff as you walk by, brush the rabbit fluff off your pants before you leave the house, don't wipe your hands on your dress, keep your skirt hem out of the puddle in the footwell and don't slam it in hte car door... and though I spent my youth in jeans I now find them far too restrictive and uncomfortable, and the only pair I still have, I only wear to rock concerts. For work, I have cargo pants with a specific loadout in the pocketses and they come off and hang by the door when I get home, along with my sports bra and ball caps... I also have not kept abreast of current fashions in the last twenty-five years, best I'd do is occasionally buy something cute at the discount store I do most of my shopping at (no, it's not Walmart) that never go with anything else I own, so the closest I can come to naming my personal aesthetic is "carpet goblin", "plaid my moother hates" or "F-off, it's comfortable" . And I find footwear as uncomfortable as bras, it's only for support or protection as well and comes off as soon as I get home. And mostly constitutes workboots, running shoes, or when I want to be fancy, the nice pair of cowboy boots or dress sandals.

It was interesting to see you in modern clothing. I completely agree about the bra. Please remind me (us), do you typically wear a corset daily? You've probaly alreay gotten rid of your thrift finds, but if not, and if they fit and were comfortable, you might consider keeping the denim jacket, top from day 2, flannel shirt, cardigan, shoes from day 2, and boots from day 3. A denim jacket that fits can be very useful. Same for a cardigan. The flannel shirt is great as is or could be remade into something more historical. The shoes/boots were semi-historical already, and you seemed to like the sage or olive knit top. Glad you learned some things about yourself in this experiment. While you may not have felt it, you certainly showed a lot of confidence in your choices and in wearing them and talking about them. Didn't know you acted! Will be interested to know more about that in the future.
