Vladimir Putin is waging war against Ukraine and he will next attack Europe, says Andrei Illarionov, formerly a Senior Policy Adviser during Putin's early period as President. Illarionov recollects how it was to work with Putin and explains what the West must do, now, if it wishes for peace in the West.
We cannot waste time in supporting Ukraine so that Putin's madness is stopped.

@D No, more like how Russia doesn't know that Germany AND Russia invaded Poland together, and conquered it together. They had a plan to conquer Europe. Russia would conquer everything east of the new line in Poland, and Germany would conquer west. They would build space programs and send long range to the USA later. For two years after they did that, Stalin gave billions in todays money in weapons and resources to Germany to ensure the defeat of the allies. And Russia supported Germany's goals and plans. The only reason Russia joined the allies was because Germany suddenly invaded Russia by surprise while Russia was trying to conquer China. f After ww2, while Germany was not a threat anymore, Russia still was. Everyone knew Russia would try to conquer Europe again. So the world had to adapt to Russia's threat. All countries gave up Imperialism (nations conquering other nations), we invented Globalization to deter Russia because it gives countries the power of sanctions as an another options to avoid constantly being at war. Russia and China didn't participate, but the rest did. And we created NATO so European independent countries can defend like an Empire. The reason Russians don't know ww2 history is because Russia has a separate internet and information space. And 188 countries are directly connected to the global net. We share one information space. So you aren't getting the collective history that everyone else is.

The key point here is the potentially disastrous consequences of an enlarged and emboldened Russia at the gates of Europe. The costs of aiding Ukraine now would be dwarfed by the additional defence spending required to keep a resurgent Russia in check. And the risks of extending our military support for Ukraine would be dwarfed by the greater risks of a flashpoint in the Baltics or in Poland if Russia takes Ukraine. The time to stop this madness is NOW.

I remember when Illarionov was serving under Putin as an economic advisor. It was a while back and I recall how Illarionov was one of very few people who did not kiss up to Putin. Illarionov always appeared to handle himself as a subordinate expert but never as a subservient sleaze and never as someone seeking power. He is very well aware of his economic expertise and can confidently step in and out of his power position without any drama or as much of a mention in a media. I remember that Putin treated Illarionov with respect and regarded his expertise highly. If I'm not mistaken, Illarionov was called to serve under Putin more than once. You will not see this man speak to the media a lot but when he does, always pay attention - he's a sober minded, a matter of fact observer and analyst. Whether you agree with him or not is irrelevant.

Biden and nato seemed to think they could "manage" russia, and had forever. In the USA Trump supporters despise supporting UA, belive in fantasy narratives, conspiracy theories etc...and still after everything support trump - it's creepy how much people can rationalize extreme behavior if it's for thier own team. Europe needs to be prepared not only to increase support for UA but to also be doing it alone if trump wins. Not sure what has happened to the USA, but be prepared for anything - and without USA supporting rule of law the world will become more dangerous - mid-sized countries will arm up and any democracy can change policies at any time. Increadably frustrating to see the US trickle of long-ranged weopons. Countries like Morroco are recieving large orders of US weopons, ATACMS and othe surprising things. but UA get 30 tanks and a a few stripped-down f-16s over 2 years t support a 900KM front.

This is really nothing new to me. I've already said this even before the start of the second part of the war. It is imperative that we step up production and not rely on the US so much. Europe needs to take matters into its own hands. It is appalling how unprepared we are. This is about our own future, even though the fight takes place in Ukraine. This is not just a territorial war between Ukraine and Russia. Europe has the potential to be a world power on its own, and it needs to live up to that fact, or otherwise the whole European project will dismally fail.

One of the biggest mistakes of the western countries is having this inflated sense of military superiority and the belief that for that reason no one would dare to attack a NATO member. We are dealing with a country who has a huge amount of nuclear weapons and a leader who has no qualms about threatening nuclear warfare. Something we in the west will do anything to avoid. Then after maybe 10-15 years the Baltics and even though they are in NATO, there’s no way NATO would be able to save them unless we would be willing to start WWIII with a nuclear superpower. Russia HAS to be stopped now, and western leaders need to get that into their heads and really step up and help Ukraine NOW! Firstly, exceptions do not disprove the rule; Afghanistan is a standout result. Secondly, fighting guerrillas on their own territory presents its own difficulties. The calculus Mr. Illiarionov uses relates to conventional war between sovereign powers. What standout results have been achieved by the economic underdog in that context? Any? Not many.

However, for all the esteemed guests experience of Putin, is it not simply possible that under pressure of failing health and maybe a deadline made by diagnosis, he simply doesn't have the time to be this meticulous. What we've seen with the under-performance on the battlefield, and some monumental errors- like inaccurate maps, and massive misalignment between expectations and reality show he didn't prepare this campaign well. He's surrounded himself with yes men who were too afraid to disagree with him when he most needed to hear the painful truth.

I live in the Baltics, the threat is very clear here. I am not of the opinion that Putin will start an all-out war with NATO here but he's unpredictable to say the least. And here in Latvia they have the 5th colon - half of the population are descendants of forced Russian immigrants from the USSR, so they don't even have to invade as our own countrymen will betray us unfortunately. It is very daunting to raise my family with the understanding that the rug can be pulled from under our feet at any moment. It's not only the Americans who are ignorant though. Germans are wary of war support since they depend on Russian energy. Italians and Spanish think they're too far away from the front lines. French have a shitstorm in their backyard due to immigrants. And the brits are drunk on Russian money as well (London is called Londongrad in some circles). So what can we make of all this? It is going to be a tough time ahead for us in North/East Europe and, if Europe is humiliated by the russki's, USA has no chance to stay a global superpower without a strong ally in this continent. And that is the end of the Western civilization as Chinese will take it over from here. What a fiasco.
