I broke up with my only ex and first romantic relationship ever in highschool. We originally were just taking a break so they could take time for themself. Everyone else then told me, “Saying you’re taking a break is the exact same thing as a break up.” That confused me. Now I know though that it is okay to take breaks. I’m unsure if I was a good gf though. Since it was my first relationship, I was a little unsure with giving affection which probably affected it. I can’t cuddle people because I can’t stay still like that, endure body heat from another person, and I can’t do it in silence or I start overthinking everything. I also have still to this day never made out with someone before because I’m so incredibly nervous that it will go wrong. My ex though is now my bestie! We’ve been besties for 2 years now! I’m so happy to meet them and we have so much fun together! They have a new gf too who I’ve gotten to meet and we’re friends too! I know I shouldn’t compare myself because that’s harmful to myself but I can’t help sometimes and think that I wasn’t affectionate enough. They cuddle, they kiss, and it definitely feels like what my bestie deserves. But it makes me wonder if I should or could be more affectionate to my next partner.

Honestly, there's nothing wrong with not being affectionate. I was the same way with my first relationship. I just HATED being touched. Couldn't even hug, I hated it. I had my reasons but you gotta just learn your love language and find someone who can match that as well as someone you can match their love language. Not everyone loves affection and that's okay. Especially it being your first relationship, it's normal to not be all over each other. Don't rush and go with the flow and do what you want when you're ready even if it takes years. The right one will be patient and understanding. I learned to be affectionate and feel safe with hugs and affection with my current partner. It took YEARS for me to get to where I am and how I am in my relationship so please don't doubt yourself or ever think something like this is your fault. You'll learn your love language and adjust and find someone who can match you and who you can match too! Much love and keep learning, you're doing amazing!💕

Friendships with exes work when things ended "nicely" (no cheating, no toxicity or anything negative whatsoever), usually it's when they mutually stop loving each other (in this case, he turned out to be gay so being friends with his ex had no risks for rebounds). In my case, we just outgrew each other, we had been together for 6 years during our teenage years, and by the time we were 20, we realized we had both changed, so much so we were no longer in love with each other, but to this day we're still friends, because he really is one of my best friends, and the only one who knows me through and through. The chances of meeting someone who cherishes my friendship and my personality as much as he does, are very low now. Granted, we don't talk that often because we're both busy, and because he has had several other girlfriends over the years, so out of respect, I tend to limit our interactions, but they're always completely platonic. I've never felt the need to touch him inappropriately or kiss him, it's weird but the attraction is really gone. He was my first love and it was very intense and real, so I can guarantee you that we DID love each other, and we still care about each other.
