I can vouch for the future not being guaranteed. I'm 52, have never had a day off work sick in the past 14 years yet I suffered a heart attack out of the blue in January - and "quite a serious one..." according to the A&E Doc that assessed me and prepped me for a stent operation. I had no idea it was happening, I took myself up to the hospital on the bus as I expected to be waiting all day and didn't want to pay the parking fee ! So you never know what is around the corner or how long you have left. I'm now trying to assess if I can down tools with the savings I already have combined with a healthy voluntary redundancy offer my employer announced two weeks after my op (fate ?) and enjoy whatever time I have left. I'm trying to make changes to avoid a repeat episode of course but, statistically at least, my life expectancy has now reduced so if I can afford to stop now, why not. At worst I'll take on a 'pocket money' job just to tide me over and give my pension pot a few more years to grow. But I've definitely learnt that tomorrow isn't promised folks !

I didnt have the spare cash to invest till my early 40s (46 now). I am fortunate that i make enough that i can max both my isa and that of my child, while still having a decent amount to spare. Im self employed and find it difficult to say no to work. Its addictive, and im good at it, and i mostly enjoy it. But youre right, sometimes i have to remember to live. Ive recently tried to remember to collect experiences, and not material possessions.

I think the issue is not linked or limited to any specific profession. It's just how the system works. They want people to study hard so they can become good "employees". The vast majority of people, even high earners who are getting millions worth of sales, have very flaky understanding of personal finance and investing. The only way to retire comfortably is to own fundamentally good, cash generating businesses, their sole purpose is to create wealth for the owners. Now one can own and run their business if they choose to, or just own and let the management do their thing. Investing is not an option. I'd even say this - it can be more risky to not invest. Toby and other good KZbinrs are helping people a lot. So thanks to them putting such effort to educate us.

Another Vlogger called Azul has said many times when you reach 60 you only have 1000 weeks left....how many of thoese weeks are you going to be in good health & be able to enjoy the fruit of your labour. I intend to retire at 63 while I am still in good health. Yes you can have lots of money but you can not do much with it from your sick bed. Take the time to enjoy the remaining 1000 weeks.
@amitray6614
@amitray6614 2 ай бұрын
I watch Azul's videos too. He's good and does have a great point about 1000 weeks. But I'd say this, if one appreciates the power of compounding early and the importance of investing and not throwing cash on unnecessary/ meaningless purchases, they could have the option to retire with more than 1000 weeks left, and many of them could be with good health.

Great video Toby. I like these philosophical discussions and wish that more financial YT channels did this. I had to laugh when you mentioned the cost of your running. I'm into cycling and that can be mega expensive! I daren't add up how much I've spent on bikes, clothing, tech, nutrition and accessories over the years, but I wouldn't change a thing. It's important to remember to enjoy your hard earned and not be 100% looking at making more money, without an end goal.

I am so glad a financial KZbinr has approached this topic , there seems to be so much focus by so many people to save and invest everything they can for their later years , when let's be realistic most of us won't be able to enjoy all the things we are able to during our younger years , and there is certainly no point being the richest man or woman in the graveyard . Hi Toby, My Wife is almost the opposite to me, where she says live for today and not the future. I have gone backwards and forwards on this constantly with her and said why cant we do both (pretty much what we are doing!). She just says 'well do what you want'. My point here is exactly what you have said for the first part of the video, where you should most definitely not skimp now just because you want to retire early. I have young children too so I want to give them the best life growing up now as well.

Great advice Toby. My husband and I are in our early forties with 10 and 8 year old boys. We both work 3 days a week (teacher and NHS) which is perfect for us in maintaining a good work/life balance and taking a slower pace in life. I've used the compound calculators and have looked at how much more money we could invest if we worked more hours (putting the kids into breakfast/after-school clubs) and how extra money we might have in the future as a result. Ultimately life is happening now though, not in 30 years so it's all a balance, yes I might not be able to retire as early as some other people who work full time, but I'll only work part time for the next 20 years so it's a trade I'm happy making. My mum was diagnosed with Parkinson's within 3 months of retiring and her health means she cannot enjoy many of the things she was originally planning - it's made me realise that the future (or our health) is not guaranteed so you need to factor in your current happiness too and not just focus on the future.

This is exactly it. I'm taking retirement planning very seriously, but i am also enjoying life now. I have a spreadsheet where i have planned out my net worth for every month until im 100 years old. If im ahead of target i loosen the purse strings a bit, if im behind (as i was for most of 2022) i tighten that belt. I have 3 distinct retirment pots. A defined contribution pension which i put into every month and i aim to last me 15 years or so (58-73). I have a stocks and shares ISA which i try to maximise every year which i wont take money out of until i am 73 (with 30 years growth i am hoping this along with state pension will last me till i am dead). And i have a regular stocks and shares account which i oay into every month for an early retirement. Seeing each one grow and tracking each one really encourages me to keep on target.

A great video Toby. They are getting better and better 👍 Interesting because investing can become obsessive, and you are correct, that you lose the focus of whats going on today. Also if you have been frugal for years and years its hard to just turn the money taps on. I feel I need to loosen mine a little 😊 Good luck at the marathon. I have done a few. Set off nice and steady, enjoy the occasion, and under NO circumstances, try and bite off more than you can chew ! It will come back to bite you in the last few miles, as it did me at London. You are only capable of what you can do. Running is not like other sports. . . . . .you can’t get lucky on the day. Fellrunner Jim

Great video, and I have been pondering the same thing recently. The Ronald Read story is interesting, but my overriding feeling about it is 'what was the point?'. He lived frugally, and presumably his family did too, and died before he could enjoy the fruits of his investments. To top it off he gave most of it to charity! The right word is 'balance', live for now and don't deny yourself treats and experiences, but always keep an eye on the future because it will be here before you know it! 🙂

Why did he even invest if he wasnt intending on using it to enjoy it later? Just seems pointless. You need to enjoy the moment now along with investing, only get one go round...

I do try to maximize the amount I invest. But the approach is pretty much the same as my progress doing bench press: I have a fixed weight and reps I need to lift, anything above that only gets me stronger. Fair enough, some days I'm actually tired and feel like cheating. No, I don't pay for a gym. I bought my own bench, of course.

Like everything else, it's about finding the right balance, which isn't always easy. I think it is helpful to also set goals and determine what is important during a particular moment in your life. I would be frugal for years so i could splurge on year long trips. Then I decided to focus on a purchasing a home. Now my focus is investing. I am naturally frugal but I splurge on what matters to me and makes me happy, such as travelling. But I also know that I can travel without spending a fortune.

As a low-income and fully independent earner I'm investing a relatively large amount of my income (roughly 20%) which can feel excessive at times. Especially when I get towards the last 10 days of the month and living out of tinned food. But I realise the importance of compound interest and being in my mid(late) twenties this is an important time to put that money aside. It'll need to go towards a deposit when the time comes although I don't see that happening for decades 😪 I think that it's just as important to earn a better salary as it is to invest which is my current goal. It's important to enjoy life but this is a challenging time to do that I'll be honest, can't do it all..

Very nice video, Toby. (Hopefully) No-one at our funerals will stick up a chart of how we've invested, or want to talk about our knowledge of withholding tax. What they will talk about is the memories shared, the kindness we showed them, the time we gave them and so on. Investing should be enabling, not disabling. If it's at a point where life today has seemed to be red-lighted for the future life to be green-lighted, that's not good. For all investing's importance to retirement, a house, children's opportunities (or whatever a person's goals are), time runs out, chances to play with our children run out, chances to visit xyz while healthy runs out. I was fortunate to be able to spend an incredible amount of time with our only child as we home-educated until secondary. Though it meant income was low and we've then had to play catch up financially with pensions etc., I'm so glad we did what we did. Take care!

What I was thinking of is start with 50% bonds 50% stocks, because of coverage, meaning if stocks fall even 70%, bonds will cover it. That means that we can just transfer funds from bonds to stocks. Now what is different in my way of thinking is this: if the initial 50% stocks was enough to start with, why let it compound in the stocks section when we can just limit the stock part to a fixed amount, the amount we started with, and compound it in the bonds section at the end of every year at the rate of 4-5% instead of the 9-10%. This way less drawdowns, less volatility, and yes less money at the end but you are hunting a rabbit with a jet fighter.

If you have a long time horizon to invest, 10 years plus, then you should always go with stocks. I would always go with an index ETF for as long as I could afford to keep the money invested, as all stock markets rebound the following couple of years after a downturn and you reap the rewards of that. If you can afford to keep the money in the market then volatility and drawdowns don't matter.

Having a young family has made me re-evaluate my financial goals. I used to invest in the stock market etc, but now I care more about giving my children (and my wife) memories. We spend what some would consider stupid amount of money on holidays each year, but our children get more out of them than my talking to them about the ETFs I’ve bought. We have a lot of Premium Bonds and I’m not ruling out entering the stock market again, but what we spend on enjoying life means there’s not a great deal spare to be invested. My wife and I have public sector pensions that (fingers crossed) should be solid when we come to retire. All in all it’s a balancing act. If I lay on my deathbed and thought I’d not given my children everything I could during their childhood just because I focussed on investing and saving then I’d be angry at myself. I’d actually like to get some gold sovereigns as a storage wealth to pass to my children in the future and that’s where my focus is currently over the stock market.

All very true, but for some people a lot easier said than done. My boss is a good example, everything that brought him wealth and status, all the hard work, long hours, frugality, investing, he can't change those ways. It's like an addiction, he can't take a step back and enjoy spending money.

Is there a problem in maxing out ISA/pension in one go? I.e. start of the financial year. Are you more exposed as you’re not dollar cost averaging over the year? I assume it doesn’t matter if your investing horizon is 20 years.

I've seen 2 IFAs use a ballpark figure of 75% of the time the lump sum has beaten the drip feeding. I've also seen examples myself from established sources in the past which would lead me to feel fine thinking that's the odds in favour of lump sum is in line with that. That said, it can often be more about investor behaviour than anything else. A person who 'thinks' they would be fine not reacting to a 50% drop v one who has experienced it and did not react (by stopping further investment, selling out etc.) are different things. Hence, regardless of the odds, if it'll help someone stay the course then that has to be factored in, I would suggest. I suppose it's quite similar to the reason for having a bond allocation even when, statistics would suggest go full equity in the accumulation phase.

I spent three years traveling with my wife from age 35 to 38, traveling to SE Asia, Turkey, and Brazil. It was the best investment so far. I feel blessed I had the opportunity and still make money working online-not much, though, but enough to not let my bank account suffer too much. I didn't even invest money during this period.

I'm in a bit of a dilemma myself. About to upgrade our family home which will eat away at spare cash for investing. Even if I could scrape together 200 quid per month to invest, it would be at the expense of family holidays. Nah don't think it's worth it tbh

It’s so funny. I was thinking of Ronald Reid this morning, wondering if he did enjoy his frugal lifestyle despite having $8m in the bank. I’m not sure, but it made me think that I actually would like balance of enjoying life now and investing for the future in the right balance. Great video as always Toby, keep it up!

I used the same figures & calculator online but have different results. Initial balance £300, 9% interest rate, £300 deposits monthly (end of the month not beginning), 30 year time frame. Mine: Future investment value: £553,642.22 Time weighted return: 1373.06% Your result: Future investment value: £514,929.11 Time weighted return: 1075.44% Big fan of the channel 😊 just want to understand why our results differed also new to all of this but watching your videos made me realise to go index funds long term over picking stocks. Learning a lot from the channel thanks😁👊🏽

@kevh7941 I'm not on about inflation. If you use the same figures as he's used you will not get the same result. I've tried changing the deposit period: monthly (£300), quarterly (£900), half yearly (£1800) and annually (£3600) plus I also did paying these deposits at the beginning and end of the following periods (meaning either start or end of the month, quater, half year and annually and I can't get the same figures. The initial balance, interest rate yearly, time period (30 years) are non variables the only variable in this is when you deposit additional funds and I've done all of them and non add up to tobys result. I may be being a huge idiot and missing something obvious but its bugging me and I really wanna know😂

though given that time in the stock market generates more money over time, and investments generally grow faster than inflation, doesn't it make sense to be frugal today, and spend more tomorrow? i agree though that it's probably not right to try to have millions saved up for retirement.
