I'm going to try something with NO idea if it will work out, or be a total failure.
I'm going to write (or try to write) a song in 10 minutes. And I'm going to do it by picking the key, chord progression and even lyrics at random out of a bowl.
Why?
Because doing something like this is a great way to push your creativity and your boundaries as well.
Personally, I find it really easy to get stuck in a rut when it comes to chord progressions. I KNOW what chords sound good together, so I often find myself gravitating towards them.
This is a great way to challenge some of those habits and get a little uncomfortable.
So here it is:
- Choosing a key - 0:31
- Choosing the chords - 0:50
- Accidental Evanescence - 1:20
- Choosing lyrics - 2:20
- Choosing more lyrics - 4:58
- Choosing a 4th chord - 6:18
- The final product - 8:30
- Thoughts on the process - 9:41
This was a very cool experiment. It was certainly challenging and pushed me beyond my comfort zone. But that's how you get better!
I'd love for you to try something similar - and if you do, post a link to your video in the comments.

To increase engagement with your channel you could ask your subscribers to run with what you began to create here and see what they come up with by having them post their creations in the comments. Sony called, contracts going out today. I love how the V chord creates tension and want to resolve to the tonic chord. I kinda like the G Tonic myself, just release some tension, especially after eating my old lady's cooking. I love her but her cooking's sooo bad, I pray after I eat.

Wow. There are times that I take my songwriting too seriously. While some of my songs lean that way, I forget to have fun and be creative. Watching this video gave me a GREAT idea on how to approach 2 new songs I wrote lyrics for. Also, since I write predominantly on my guitar and do country, I tend to get stuck in the G, C, D, Em, Am progression or some variation of this arrangement. My songs REALLY start to sound the same and if I'm tired of it, I can imagine what my listeners are probably thinking. Yes, I can put the CAPO on my guitar and maybe start on E instead of G, and while there are a lot of options there, there's still a lot of limitations for me since I'm not the well rounded player that I want to be. I never even thought of putting chord numbers in a bowl and just pulling them out randomly and see what happens. I've got a few pretty fun upbeat songs that this would probably work great on. I need to watch ALL your videos, take notes and work on finishing the Pianote course that I started. This is already helping me with piano music and while I'm working on adding accompaniments to older songs, I'm inclined to get back and rewrite (musically) some older stuff so it doesn't all sound the same. I know, long post, but thank you SO MUCH for making this video. You really are too cool.

Like this song you just thought up! Couple of more lines of lyrics to deepen the the story and increase the contrast between the fears, and the safety of a loved one, and it'll be complete. Especially if you keep coming back to your anchor in life, that love. The minors may accommodate a severe plot twist at the end... Fear of losing that love, and then finally losing it... And then what? Strong because of a memory of that love. Drama complete, and the romance as well. Would be nice if you could finish the song. Will be interesting to hear it!
