Reminds me of that brilliant, brilliant clip from walk the line, the Johnny cash movie where he plays that same old religious crap for the executive and he says, we’ve heard that song. He says if you were lying in a ditch dying and had one song, just one song to sing, to sum up how you felt about this life, you’re telling me that’s what you’d sing? It ain’t about believing in god it’s about believing in yourself. Because that’s the only song that truly saves people. It’s such a beautiful and motivating scene I rewatch it from time to time.

Notice this so much in film & tv the past few years. Characters making choices that feel unnatural to their established mannerisms just for the story to reach a desired plot point. It can really take you out from enjoying the film/show

"If you ever have to choose between the aliveness of your characters or your idea of your story structure, always choose the aliveness of your characters because it’s going to lead you to the truth of your story structure, not your idea (of structure)" This is a great observation. I think getting "stuck" is your subconscious telling you you have either made a mistake in prose you have already written, or prose you are planning to write. This is a mistake only a human reader is going to notice. Where did John get the letter opener from to kill the bad guy? Should this scene come after that scene? That kind of stuff.

This is an extremely important lesson to learn. It's only AFTER you let go of the world telling you to succeed, to make something fake that will be popular, that you find your true audience AND your own voice.

Well said. Real creation only comes after you fully embrace who you are and what you truly want to express. Faking is a form of forcing, and your audience will tell you are pushing hard, and in that way, the things you create will only make people feel exhausted.

Ken Atchity, Glenn Gers, Corey Mandell and Alan Watt (and Steven Pressfield) are all on the same page here; separate the creative process from the results [your expectations and fears]. It's not up to the writer to judge their own work, and doing so will only make the process more challenging and less fun. The artist has to have the curiosity and freedom to express ideas, experiment and grow as a creator. And then the judgment to utilise that that in the most effective way by employing craft.

Societies structure hinders creativity. Not only does Interruption express conflict, it's more interesting than the soul mannerism of politeness (waiting your turn to speak). Interestingly mannerism is also categories as rude and surprisingly boredom. Mannerism is a twisted word to explore, which is endure conflict in itself. Also 'getting stuck' in politeness wouldn't make a smile cry, although there is deeper truth.

😍..'you've got to be a bad student"...."the PURPOSE of STORY is to reveal a TRANSFORMATION"..."surrender to the PROCESS, bring your passion but also bring your craft and LET GO OF THE RESULTS!!!"... he types to himself every day 😅😅😅. The combination of Alan Watt's writer training 'principles' combined with Eric Edson's Hero Goal Sequence (my story is A1-6▶A2a-6_A2b-6▶A3-3 for a total of 21 HGS's) and Kurt Vonnegut 'Shapes of Stories' has brought it all together for me. I can now envision my story, beginning to end, where as before it was all a jumbled rant in my mind for too many years. Working on 2nd iteration, and discipline of regular writing - let it floooooowww baby! (revise AFTER) 😆...
