Did he really say that tough? I mean it would be pretty edgy, but there needs to be groups/elites (actually there are some in the so called conservative party) that really rejects the west and tries to do something alone. But it would make my day if Emperor Akihito actually said that. (Sadly the monarchy gets more and more watered out for each generation. And, the monarchy, however holy it may be (this applies to most countries) is hold up by a nobility. And that is the great problem. We may have 'monarch' but the monarchy (landowners/knights/samurai).

I agree with your sentiment, but feel that I have to add that the troops didn't want to overthrow the Emperor. They wanted to protect it. The concept of Gekokoju mixed with Nichiren Buddhism carries this tradition. It was viewed as something good, higher, more noble, to fight for what one saw as the ''greater good'' and going against every institution and higher order. These soldiers simply thought the Emperor was mislead by politicians. (Which he was, not only then but also in 1936). From their point of view they protected not only the Emperor, but more importantly the Kokutai. That is, not Hirohito as Emperor but the survival of the ''Emperor System''. They were great patriots, with hearts much bigger than any politicians or court friends physically close to the Emperor.
