In February 1936 a group of Japanese young officers attempted a coup (Gekokujō), inspired by the ideas of Ikki Kita they wanted to restore full power to the Emperor. The faction within the military they were adherents of (Kodoha/Imperial Way) saw the Soviet Union as Japan’s biggest threat. And urged the military to prepare a preemptive war. Within the country they demanded the break up of the Zaibatsu (A Nouveau riche industrial conglomerate). The brother of the Emperor, Prince Chichibu, and much of the military and the navy was sympathetic to the cause. Yukio Mishima’s novella ’’Patriotism’’ is about an army officer who learns about his comrades plans to make the coup, morally unable to join them and morally unable to tell the authorities he commits Seppeku with his wife.

The Japanese businessman was the CEO of McDonalds in Japan, said that Japanese people were small of too many centuries eating rice and fish, therefore, if they ate burgers like the americans, they will turn into aryans and have blonde hair and blue eyes. The first McDonalds in Japan was very successful and had a very long queue of people waiting outside.

Both Kodoha and Tōseiha were for Bushido and pro Imperial Japan. They had different means to the goal, but in the end it was pretty much the same goal. The USA and its allies can not accept any other strong power, and will annihilate any power that it can. That is why they made Japan bound to treaties (Washington Naval Treaty), no matter which faction, any faction that was the least nationalistic in Japan would always meet the wrath of the USA.

Realistically they would never have, for example let’s say if they fully conquered China. That wouldn’t last, even during the war. When the war in China reached a stalemate the Japanese frontline was only held near the coastal cities as China did not have a navy yet. Event with that, there were still massive pockets of chinese resistance in supposed occupied territory with 0 Japanese presence. Logistically japan would never be able to advance deep into China without suffering millions of casualties
