i am mexican-american living in california; never have fit in with the majority of Mexicans. The few Mexican-Americans who accepted me looked like me (pale/'"white skin" , black/brown hair that was curly or wavy and sometimes glasses) and also nerds (like me). The other two friends I had in junior college were actually Jewish and often spoke with me about their beliefs...I don't know...somehow, someway, we always ended up talking about Torah or something about being culturally Jewish and I felt such a strong affinity and they were very dear friends as well. My mom is from Zacatecas and always cooked "tortitas de papa", what I now know are latkes. When my grandpa passed away, we had many strange customs in the house in the days following his death, which now I know were Jewish mourning customs mixed with Cathlocism. My grandma on my mom's side always mentions how everyone on her family had "colored eyes" (green or blue) and blonde or auburn hair. On my dad's side, same thing. Everyone has "colored eyes" and slightly auburn/red hair or black hair that curls. I don't think any of my family members on both sides have that straight Indigenous hair I always wished I had and admired. After doing extensive research on my family names (and even some Roma from Eastern Europe I met saying I had to be one of them and that one of the last names was a misspelling of a "gypsy" surname) and finally a DNA test, I confirmed that I am indeed Sephardic and Ashkenazim, specifically Spanish/Portuguese/Moroccan, Italian and Hungarian Jew, which all check out from what I've seen in my family. I read the Tanakh as much as I can, bless my food and naturally fasted on fasting holidays in the Jewish Calander without knowing they were high holidays. My mom worked in a Jewish bakery and would talk about how they were celebrating Rosh Hashanna , Yom Kippur, Channakuh and talk about the bread, like pumpernickel and challa. I always felt something in myself stir when hearing this and my curiosity peak...almost jealousy or envy that I was missing out on the actual holidays. Long story short, being a crypto-Jew in Southern California among a population I technically belong to but have little in common nor accepted by with has been like "Matilda" my entire life. I really wish I grew up "Jewish" instead of Catholic, attended Schul instead of Cathechism and could read Hebrew in addition to Spanish and English. I really feel like a large part of my heritage and self was stolen when my family left Spain in 1770 and came to the New World as Catholics. It was for self preservation... but it never really goes away. And I'm glad. Edit: i write such a long thing hoping it will help ANYONE who is going through smething similar.

Great to know the history of the Spanish colonization of the land of the Mexicas too. It's interesting. Personally, my Ashkenazi Jewish genes are something I can feel and can recognize in others without even exchanging words. When i took a DNA test last year it did specify 98% Ashkenazi and even narrowed down to the area I know my great grandfather was born in.

I’m from Puerto Rico and my family came from Spain and Canary Islands. My mother also taught me to kiss the bread before throwing it, but her mother use to said also after kissing the bread: Thanking G-d for the sustenance. My grandmother used to cover the mirrors when some family members passed away. My mother also use to tell use not to count the starts and if we do we could get warts. Now that I have been studying Judaism and I did convert, now it makes more sense that was some jewish traditions running around the family. We do have many more traditions specially in our food.

Hello, Je Val, how beautiful your story, your story is familiar to mine, my grandmother saw when I had a piece of bread that fell I went to throw it away she said no kiss it and raise it up to heaven giving it great respect and also said not to count the stars from heaven because of the warts she also covered the mirrors, my family is also from Spain and the Canary Islands, I would look at my grandfather and tell my dad he looks Jewish with his rectangular long facial features and white beard, I have not done my DNA but I have this bond with the Jewish culture, I am a devout Catholic and I am in love with my Catholic Faith, and if I ever decide to have my DNA done and come back with Jewish ancestry, I would never leave my faith, my GOD bless you always. 🌷

Most Hispanics in the New World that have Spanish ancestors from the time of the Spanish Empire have Jewish ancestors. But generally, it's not through the mother's mother's mother's line. That line, for most Hispanics is Native American. I have Sephardic Jewish ancestors on my mother's side, but not on my maternal line. I'd have to convert to Judaism if I wanted to be recognized as such. I'm looking into it.

The heritage through the mother is a FAKE. You don't get your faith through the Uterus and/or blood. Most Hispanics have HEBREW heritage. In fact, the real biblical people. Modern Jews are converted without any link to the holly land. Remember that the father gives the lineage in the bible. Hence, the name of the 12 tribes of Israel is MALES. In science, the spermatozoid gives sex to the fetus.
@Jorge17275

@Lena Samuel LOL. Judaism is a religion. Remember, religions are man-made. NO religion appears on the TORAH. You DON'T pass a faith through the blood or Uterus!!! I hope you understand that. In addition, Orthodox Judaism does not allow Rabbi women because they are considered "dirty" due to the menses. Is that the respect to Jewish mother? The law called "LAW OF THE WOMB" is being eliminated because some "jews" don't even practice Judaism. Lastly, JUDAISM did not exist in biblical times. The faith at that time was called "MOISAC LAW". Don't buy cheap propaganda.!!!

@@maryglover7600 I am not depeply offended, just a little bit perplexed by your statement, but to say you have Jewish ancestry and then claim that you are "complete" becasue you are a Christian is a bit mind boggling. Jesus doesn't make a person complete if they camefrom Jewish people in the past. I am Jewish person, born in Europe after the shoah and also an Israeli. I don't need this Jesus to make me "complete" In fact, becasue I am Jewish and don't belevie in the devinity of Jesus, I am actually complete, and complete in the way G-d wants without these false G-ds, like Jesus, Muhammad, ect. I hope you can delve into your ancestroy more. If you truely have Jewish blood and DNA, then yoru sol will recoginze it andbring you back to haShem, who is God, in his one-ness. I wish you a great Jewish new year and may you be enscribed for another wonderful year of life (Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, they both just past). A.

We descendants of the Sephardic Jews who converted to Christianity should be accepted as Catholics. We do not need to revert back to Judaism to feel proud of our ancestry. Many of our ancestors willingly converted. The question for me was about Jesus. He is the messiah and I will never deny him!

@@samirrewari6104 more over the Jewish Followers of Yeshua had very good jobs, hatred and jealousy was also a part of this cruel wickedness. Continuing his interest in Medieval Spanish Jewry, Golden age of Jewish culture in Spain and Portugal, Benzion Netanyahu wrote a book about Isaac Abrabanel and essays on the Spanish Inquisition and the Marranos. He developed a theory according to which the Marranos converted to Christianity, not under compulsion, but out of a desire to integrate into Christian society. However, as New Christians they continued to be persecuted due to racism, and not purely for religious reasons, as was previously believed. He argued that what was new in the 15th century was the Spanish monarchy’s practice of defining Jews not religiously, but racially, by the principle of limpieza de sangre, purity of blood. Netanyahu rejected the idea that the Marranos lived double lives, claiming that this theory arose from Inquisition documents.
