Thank you very much!! I have installed i3 on Debian 12 using your script!! I have always been a KDE user. From now on I'll use i3. For a better experience I'll have to find some alternative apps to use on i3 I guess since I used KDE apps.

Thanks for the update on your i3 configs. I've been using i3 based on your configs for quite a while and I'm always looking for ways to enhance my experience, or at least try different approaches. Some of the things in this video looked very interesting, and I'm looking forward to trying them out.

Months ago I redid an i3 configuration to accommodate a smaller keyboard, 61% to be exact. Since the concept of such keyboards is to separate specific keys to their own "modes", I've adopted the keybinding modes (aka keychords) built into i3. I have up to three modes each: One for launching applications, one for window management, and one for configuration and session management. This, combined with all the tiled windows opening in tabbed view by default, I have a workflow similar to Notion and Ratpoison. None of my keybindings potentially conflict with one another. i3 "just works", and so does Xorg. I'd personally wait until Debian Trixie before using a minimal Wayland compositor, like Sway, on the daily.

You can resize the window with the mouse in i3 with the super key while holding down the right mouse button

great video. i just have a couple of points. 1- i think you can substitute the 10 shortcuts for windows for the [1-9,10] syntax and combine then into one, maybe even do two lines where one moves the window and the other follows it. 2- setting widows opacity isn't really a wm thing its a compositor thing. you can easily set a picom rule to set the opacity of active and not active windows, im just not sure if it's supported in the Debian version. i know yshui/picom does.

I had to go to Open Suse for Hyprland and I'm thoroughly impressed. With that said, I'm a big Debian fan. I wish Debian would add Hyprland to their list of DE offerings. Hyprland is ready for prime time. It's awesome.

If you like i3, you'll love Sway. It's built by Drew Devault, so it's a real piece of software. Plus, it's meant to be run on Debian stable, unlike Hyprland. I've been using it for 6+ months with zero issues. I was running i3, and all you have to do is load your i3 config into Sway and you have the exact same setup.

Very good video. My previous wm was I3 (got it from Matt - the Linux Cast) videos. X11 will someday become unusable. I am using your video on Debian 12 trixie & Hyprland as my main wm now. Maybe you should use sway wm instead? A replacement for i3 wm. You have done several videos on that.

I thought about it and put sway on a test machine a couple days ago It's possible

I like the WM but never find the moment to change. I use xfce, I use a lot darktable for edit images and this does me stop i3, though I recognize its utility. Any moment I have the change. Thanks for tour videos

I used to use i3 but had some issues (was a while ago) and went back to Gnome. Then ran into issues recently with mutter introducing micro studders into some games. So I switched to Plasma. Was running that for a good amount of time and it was ok. Then I saw a video showing off some custom scripts for Hyprland so I tried it in a VM and loved it, now my machine is running Hyprland as its only WM. I have been really enjoying it, like I used to with i3. Most of the things are setup the way I had i3. Programs auto open on certain workspaces. For instance all web browsers open on workspace 2. Steam and games are on 3, etc.

In Hyprland you can resize like that with mouse and super key. I didn"t even know. Hyprland really is crazy awesome. I switched from i3 to sway and now drive Hyprland. My favourite feature is many different scratchpads with pyprland.

The advantages of i3 are: it is actively being developed and has a great and extensive documentation. On the other hand, the guy behind bspwm (and sxhkd) seems to have stopped at some point. And the documentation does not compete with the one on i3. Speaking for myself: I just prefer the way bspwm does tiling. And both, i3 as well as bspwm, use a simple scripting language for the config files. No need to delve into python, Lua and so on.

Hi drew do you have any script particularly for bspwm along side with xfce default environment.
@JustAGuyLinux28 күн бұрын
The simple answer is no. But: 1. Have you seen the kzbin.info/www/bejne/e3bFn6uJrZd-a7s video? 2. Run the install script from the video and just install "BSPWM with JUSTAGUYLINUX customization" Assuming you want MY version of bspwm. Otherwise, choose the vanilla install. 3. You can skip everything else 4. sudo apt install -y xfce4 xfce4-goodies 5. Reboot
