6c/6t at 180 dollars cpu in 2017 was not a joke in late 2017. I5 8400 and his brothers may struggle today in some newer games, but still they can hold their own in the majority. The i3 12100f is a hell of a little cpu, 4c/8t only but with good clocks and very good ipc, also the upgrade path is solid(up to i9 14900k) and the power consumption low. Anyway good work as always RGHD!

@@peterpan408 how did it compare to R2600? I guess the 8400 was or is stronger than it but too much, plus if you did software encoded streaming then the 6 more threads were handy R2600 is like 10-15% stronger compared to first gen, 0,2 GHZ increase, so it brough improvements across the table though the 0,2 ghz increasement is the smallest my story is that I had a faulty from the factory I5 8400, then wanted to get the I3 8300k , then "luckily" due to financials i needed to wait until R2600 10 months later. I've been rocking the 9400 since 2020 and still don't feel any compelling reason to upgrade, mind the fact that you can usually get these 8th & 9th gen for like $30 because they were used for SFF office computers so they are incredible value for someone with a tight budget specially if you're not concerned about playing the latest AAA early access "release" titles.

@@pouryagolizadeh6100@pouryagolizadeh6100 what are the best CPUs that your motherboard can use? Have a look on auction sites or whatever people use in your country. I'm guessing a quick i7 or i9. Check the core and thread count. Please write back here. It's interesting for us. it 9400 is 6c 6t, 6 core 6 thread, 2.9 GHz to max 4.1 GHz. So look for 8c+, 8t+, higher speed, more L2/L3 cache. See if there's much difference, if it's worth the cost difference. Or you could sell your CPU+Ram+Mobo as a working kit. And buy another faster kit. Rich people upgrade regularly and sell their working kit, so you know you're buying a good combination. And someone else will benefit from your kit. There's KZbin videos showing how easy it is to uninstall the motherboard drivers, then switch off, change the whole kit, switch back on and your windows install should be working. Just install the new kit drivers.

Yup, I've been using a 12100F since 2022 late February or so and its been a solid experience for my use case. Mainly single player games and some casual MMOs/ARPGs that tend to be rather single core/IPC reliant and is the main reason why I bought it. Lost Ark to be exact but I don't play that game anymore/it was a massive upgrade in that game vs my old R5 1600x and since my mobo at the time had no support for Zen 3 I've sold the entire platform and switched to Intel. 'that and Zen 3 was way too overpriced at the time for my budget' I'm considering an upgrade to a second hand 13400F or a 14400F sometime next year but currently I'm fine with the 12100. I do think a 8700k would be a more interesting comparison, because of the hyper threading. The i5 8600 already loses some battles to a 7700k due to having fewer threads, and clearly a 12100f beats a 7700k. But a 8700k or even a 10400f would be interesting to see how a new architecture fairs against an old one even with fewer threads AND cores. A 9700k would actually be really interesting as the thread count is the same but obviously cores > threads. However is a 12100f so much more powerful in single core that it could close the gap to a 8c/8t 9700k?

@@rentojad The problem with these reviews is they mostly have the 8700k clocked to 4.3GHz while the 9700k clocks to 4.6GHz across all cores, which is why the 8700k almost always loses. Most Z370 and Z390 boards support a function called MCE, which will clock all cores of the 8700k to 4.7Ghz... but at a higher VCore. If you take both up to 4.7Ghz, the performance of the 9700k and 8700k is within margin of error. For that matter, either will easily overclock to 4.9Ghz or higher. I can get my 8700k to 5.2Ghz with 1.35V VCore.

Don't know if it's something you'd be interested in doing but it'd be great if their was a channel that shows how different CPU's affect GPU Performance. Most channels stick he most powerful CPU in and see how a GPU performs with no potential constraints. I recently Bought a 4070 to replace my 1080. I don't see any performance difference with my 7700k to KZbinrs testing with the latest tech. Might be an extra stutter here and their but nothing worth spending hundreds to fix. It'd be amazing to see "how low can you go" kinds of videos that help people work out cheap(ish/est), effective builds.

Tom's Hardware used to have a GPU hierarchy performance table that was so useful for this. You could look for your card, see how much one was a few generations better, and decide if it was worth it. For some reason they've stopped doing it. I'm guessing GPU manufacturers and sellers didn't like it. Gamers Nexus have great videos but they don't have that data in an easy to use format.

I bought an i3 12100 about 16 months ago at a time when I was buying the parts for a new PC cos my 6-year-old one got toast and I wasn't finding any more new parts. Anyway, I upgraded it about six months ago with an i7 13700k (in four installments) to can play Elden Ring and other newer games requiring a six physical cores CPU at least, and the difference it's huge even if we are speaking about the Windows 11 startup. With the i3 12100, I had to wait for one minute at least after I got finally logged in, to open an app (CPU used at 100%), whilst with the 17 13700k less than 5 seconds. Paired with an Asus TUF Gaming 3600 Ti OC it runs the newest games smoothly and swiftly.

@@QuillAlphaI know I'm not the one who is asked the question, but I would strongly recommend a GTX 1050 TI/ GTX 1650 instead because these too are much newer and have better driver support and they have 4 Gb of VRAM instead of 2. (If you can find a 4 Gb version of GTX 750 TI for cheap, that's fine too. Also, don't worry about a CPU bottleneck; you can always upgrade to an i7 4770k which can keep up with much stronger GPUs.)

That goes a bit back to the i7-980X (6 core, 12 thread) vs i5-2500K (4 core, 4 thread, but much higher IPC) or i7-8700K (6 core, 12 thread) vs i7-9700K (8 core, 8 thread) situation. I would expect the 6 cores to perform well when 6 threads are used, but the 4 core with SMT to lead with narrower tasks. And then there are the Ryzen 5800, 5900 and 5950, where the 5900 tends to be the weakest. The 5800 has 8 cores on one CCD, the 5900 has 12 cores, with 6 cores on each CCD, and the 5950 has 16 cores, 8 on each CCD. The 5900 does worse in 8 core loads when the high latency between the CCDs hits performance. Both the 580 and 5950 can keep the task on one CCD without the latency penalty. On >8 core tasks the 5900 tends to outpace the 5800 again, because the raw performance of having more cores takes the lead.

Keep in mind that all "13" series CPUs lower than a 13600k do _not_ have the larger caches of the higher-end Raptor Lake CPUs, thus making them little more than a small speed-bump compared to Alder Lake CPUs. The 14th gen did shuffle some SKUs a bit by adding more e-cores to the i7 line, but little else.

In my opinion I think the 12100 isn't quite as good of value as it's painted to be, am4 is still king in value since you could get a 6c12t cpu (r5 4500, 4600g, 5500, 5600, etc) with similar of better single core and much better multicore performance for cheaper. You could point to the upgrade ability of alder lake but the path isn't that bad on am4 since you could go 5950x or 5800x3d

Time and price fluctuations have worked against the 12100. Many of those CPUs were more expensive during the 12100F's better days compared to now where there are many better value or budget purchases available. Before the 12100F, i3s were often overpriced or bad value in comparison. It was basically i5 or better under any cost cutting circumstances. This CPU's price/performance and strong single thread rating (mostly the 12100F over the 12100 unless you really wanted that iGPU) changed that stigma.

Not sure I'd call the 2080 Ti a "budget" card per se(when new, it commanded anywhere from $1000-$1200+ USD in price), but I haven't really looked at used prices on that card. A card with similar performance and memory config is the RX 6700 XT. While it launched at close to $500(inflated by covid, scalping, crypto, shortages) it got down to about 2/3 of that($300-$330 USD) where it sits now. I know that's relatively cheap compared to some cards these days(6800 XT or 7800 XT for around $500, RTX 4070 for around $550, 6950 XT for around $600, 7900 XT and RTX 4070 Ti for around $800, 7900 XTX for almost $1000, RTX 4080 for $1100 and RTX 4090 for over $1600). And there are cheaper cards like the 6700, 7600, 6650 XT, 6600, and RTX 3050(not a great deal compared to what's available from AMD).

I found an I7-8700 in the trash around the corner from my house. It was in a nearly completely destroyed Lenovo prebuild. I haven't been able to pick up a working 300 series mobo for it yet but that's all I need at this point to build a PC made of parts from that period. I might use it for a home server or maybe I can sell it for a small profit to help out someone that needs a passible rig. Not sure yet but it's an exciting find. In that pile of junk I also found a 24" ONN 1080p led monitor that's now my 2nd monitor and an HP 10th Gen Intel I5 15" business laptop that was stripped for parts. After buying some cheap ram, an SSD, and an aftermarket charger for it, I repasted it and got it up and running. Really cool. My Fiancé is now using it for grad school. I love stuff like this and your channel inspires me to keep doing it.

Does that include limiting a bigger CPU to 100 W? Limiting a 12900K from 253 W to 100 W will cost you about 20% in performance for 60% less power draw.
