The Indian Air Force currently operates 31 squadrons, each with 16-18 fighter aircraft, but it ideally needs 42 squadrons. Over the next few years, Soviet-era MiG-21s will retire, followed by Jaguar, MiG-29, and Mirage 2000 jets in the 2030s. This necessitates the indigenous production of about 390 fighter jets. The LCA Tejas program is crucial for reducing foreign dependency and enhancing India's self-reliance. Developed by various Indian institutions, the Tejas Mark 1A features 40 upgrades and aims to bolster the Indian aerospace ecosystem. In February 2021, India placed a $6.58 billion order for 83 Tejas Mark 1A aircraft and plans to procure 97 more by 2024. International interest in the Tejas, including from Malaysia, Egypt, and Argentina, highlights its export potential. Meanwhile, Pakistan has acquired 25 J-10 fighters, but these are considered less reliable and technologically advanced compared to the Tejas Mark 1A

HAL needs a new leadership who knows assembly line production. It will take a very long time to produce 390 jets at current capacity.

Just talking and planning! Where are the engines? F404 is in short supply and the F410 deal is no where in sight. Neither has the discussion for the 120KN engine plan with RR or Safran reached anywhere. Therefore, the Tejas Mk1A launch is continuously delayed. The MRFA has become a fossil that will never see the light of the day. At the end of it all, India's military preparation is suffering with HAL and DRDO compounding the problems further.

Mig 21 to be replaced by TEJAS (390). But HOW. ? No Engine. Co. has Refused to deliver, ONE aircraft fly with One engine (2 Incase of twins engine) and yet required more engine. IAF is exploring other options. Many Years required to run TEJAS.

"delays are no big deal"....what a sad, endemic reflection of Sarkari mindset whether it is Doordharshan or HAL. When it comes to matters of national security, delay IS a BIG DEAL! Especially when Squadron strength is declining! For all it's latest advancements, the MK1A technologically is only a catch up to the J10CE with a lower range. We are still 2 decades behind the Chinese in terms of technology and resources. Wish DD would actually do real journalism and hold HAL/DRDO/IAF etc honest for their short comings and lack of proactiveness instead of applauding mediocrity.

No problem. China & Pak will wait until our HAL manufactures it's engine and fit it in Tejas Mark-1A. They waited decades of time and they will wait another decade until we get our jets ready. They are good neighbors and they'll understand our technical delays. Don't worry HAL, take your own time. There is no hurry, take few more decades.

First tell the Government to buy or gather atleast 300 fighter jets then think about retirement of Mig 21s, Mig 29s, Mirags and Jaguars. They can't arrange new fighters and know how to retire present jets. Do you not think it will weak our beloved Indian Air Force. We need immediately 180 jets.

This is all a monkey dance. Our poor Airforce is short of 400+ combat aircraft facing the stress of theatre commands without proper resources. We hv nothing to show except bombastic talk & ultra idealistic notions of romance with Tejas induction which keeps gettg delayed. It’s already been 18 yrs & we are targetting another 10 yrs. For all our stellar performance politically & diplomatically, we hv tied up for GE engines to power the Tejas which we want to export in competition to US fighters!!! Are we really nuts??? HAL doesn't have engines to manufacture Tejas mk1a. With 8 aircraft per year it will take a decade to manufacture 83 aircraft. Till then Mirage, Jaguar and MIG 29 will become flying coffins.

What a lot of crap. Two big problems have still not been solved and we go dreaming again! Keep on saying no big deal after every delay and a century will pass before your eyes. No aircraft engine on sight yet and HAL yet to establish an efficient manufacturing line and we go dreaming. Don't worry, Turkey will produce the fifth generation aircraft with their own engines while you are day dreaming. You can buy from Turkey.

😂😂😂 abey .. yaar kuch bhi.. tejas ek lightweight fighter hai, and it has the highest payload in this category.. na pata ho, to na likha karo🤷‍♂️ Tejas mk1a payload is 4.5T.. Tejas Mk2 has 6.5T.. Rafale has 8-9T.. No jet except F15EX (which is a 35T fighter ) has a payload of 11T😂 the total weight of Tejas is 13T .. get ur basics right and then comment ..
