i know this seems like a bit of extra work for the same result, but couldn't I cap the barb on the turbo inlet piping instead of capping the hose? therefore I could remove the metal piping at the back of the intake? if I understand this correctly, it's just to maintain vacuum in the intake?

What lubricant are you using for the fittings?
