Iain's got something that'll make him wanna shout! Workshop Catchup | Tyrrell's Classic Workshop

It's time for another workshop catchup and Iain begins with something touched on in the last episode, featuring the restoration of the sixth-ever production Lamborghini in the form of the 350 GT. So named due to the 3.5L V12 engine fitted to the car, many underwent a factory upgrade to a 4L engine at a later date, but the new owner of this particular car was keen to keep the original engine as well. Iain explains the lengths he and his team have gone to, with the help of good friend and expert Lamborghini historian Olivier Nameche, to restore the engine to as close to the original prototype as possible with the carburettors vertically mounted on top of the engine.
Iain then checks in on other jobs in the workshop, including Ferruccio Lamborghini's Ferrari 250 GT, THE car that set Ferruccio down the path of forming a car company. James has been busy reforming the front grille using the same methods Pininfarina would have used originally.
The next subject is an Jaguar E-Type, this one in for a full rotisserie restoration and currently stripped to the bare bones. Iain explains why stripping the engine has revealed some good news for the owner.
Then it's on to the long term Miura restorations that regular viewers will no doubt be familiar, the yellow 'Black Forest' Miura S and the lime green Miura SV, both well on their way now with parts being fitted such as electrics, interiors and trim.
Next up is a lovely example of a Mercedes 230 SL Pagoda, this one with a star-studded past, having been bought my Maurice Gibb as a Birthday present for Lulu! One particular feature of the car is the white-walled tyres, something Iain has a long history with from his early Rolls-Royce and Bentley days, so he can't resist a demonstration on the tried & tested method for restoring these tyres to their brilliant best.
After a short check-in with another Jaguar E-Type that was in for a tune up with Iain's trusty hosepipe and screwdriver, Iain rounds out the episode with an Aston Martin DBS V8, currently undergoing an engine restoration.

Here in Canada we use SOS pads which are similar to Brillo pads but impregnated with a blueish paste that becomes soapy when wet. Makes cleaning much easier and quicker.

"Standards, Standards" I love that!!! So I'm a yank and was taught from a early age to use brillo pads to clean whitewall tires. I used that method on my 56 chevy which had huge whitewall tires. They were always white. Love to see that even a old yank knows how to clean whitewalls like a pro.

I always use a Scotchbrite pad with a dab of Jif on it. I’ve found Brillo pads leave scratches in the rubber.

Ian just casually manages the restoration of a 350GT v12 engine, then casually strolls over and introduces us to the famous white Ferrari 250 GT-the origin of the legendary rivalry between il Commendatore and Ferruccio. Apparently the car had been in the family museum located in Funo di Argelato, as recently as 2015. I won't ask how Ian got ahold of it, but like all, I am extremely curious. Marvelous. I feel like I've been visiting a gentlemans garage, like one of the clubbable elite. Yigads! How unheard of for a commoner like me to have a look into this world. I'm very grateful. Now, if you don't mind, I'm go back to trying figure out a budget that will keep my '01 911 C2 running for a few more months. It's in need of some suspension bits and also need the AOS upgraded / replaced with a new one. My Indy tells me labor to install a stock AOS is 945.00USD. I will have to scrimp and save from somewhere else for a few months in order to get it done. Different worlds, different problems indeed. ps. My Dad used to have me do the whitewalls with 'steel wool' which is what we called it in Canada back in the day. Works a treat, so I did my pedal bike tyres with it as well.

Didn't he talk about a Dino that he had been servicing since the 80's? Figures are never mentioned and I would imagine if you have to ask about the cost you can't afford it anyway. Considering that, I would guess Tyrrell is on top of the game of cost is no object restorations, and he probably have a following of loyal customers that have been staying with him for years and even decades. If so, I imagine a lot of the cars come back for a regular tune up or detailing or even restorations now and then. So, I imagine they never say adieu to a car but au revoir?

Patience as a virtue is pretty much a byword in these videos. James' 3-week fabrication of the front grille of the Ferrari is both a testament to skill as well as emblematic of the work Iain and his team perform on each and every project. The background shots are achingly distracting with so much stunning tin, that I have had to replay the video to catch the commentary. Just a joy to watch even when the wheels are scruffy. Hope these video's are registered with the national archives as the skills and knowledge are near priceless.

Iain has the right personality for working on an restoring these types of cars. My father and uncle have owned a business in Connecticut for 33 years that specializes in restoration and maintenance on European cars. You need a HUGE amount of patience and skill to do the job well, if you’re the type who gets sidetracked or angry easily, it’s not the job for you.
