Iain Tyrrell’s Most Expensive Car Search

Before lockdown I got together with our resident classic and supercar expert Iain Tyrrell to pick his brains on more than 30 years of experience. A lot of his time is spent searching for cars on behalf of clients. In this interview I asked him about the most expensive car he’d searched for. Turns out it was designed by the legendary Gordon Murray, who’s obviously a smart guy because he drives the same car as me - an Alpine A110. Here’s Iain talking about one of Gordon’s designs that many people consider the greatest rod car of all time.

Well, l don't know how this popped up on my video list but anything with lain Tyrrell has got to be a good thing ! Iain's modesty is so refreshing and to be fair "Harry's Garage" was instrumental in making me aware of Mr. Tyrrell. However , l will take great pleasure in listening to probably one of the most knowledgeable automotive guru's on the planet where ever he appears. Thankyou.

One of the original McLaren (64) in 1995 was about to be sold to an American actor I know who was going to pay $750,000 at their former Park Lane, London showroom. The salesman looked down his nose at the Purchaser up and down and made it clear he didn't think he had the cash. He didn't buy but did make a complaint. I think he would rather have owned the car!

The most hidden sleeper? The Murena. As good as a Porsche handling wise, Mid engined, wide track, short wheelbase, 3 seats, designed for a 3 litre engine but ended up with a van engine because Renault limited the engine to the .... Alpine . Not the car mentioned these use as a daily driver but a fore runner.. The marvellous Murena (to quote Tiff's review in 82). Totally overlooked Cinderella. I wonder if he has ever been asked to look for a Murena.

The F1 was never designed to be race car but it won le mans first time out, yes the weather played a part but it still won. If you have the cash order a T50 it will be worth a fortune

The problem with the F1, T50 and T33 is Gordan Murray designed them. Not a fan of him, but he won't mind as he has an enormous ego

@@psk5746 I met Gordon Murray at the McLaren F1 launch in Hong Kong, he was incredibly generous with his time, supremely patient with my barrage of questions, and gave incredibly clear answers. Maybe his confidence comes across as arrogance to you, but it shouldn’t affect your opinion of a car

@@doctorpatient519 Everyone has their stories. Years back, in California, I was at an auction. They had a 400GT. It ran great, had a very nice interior, a few rough spots on the paint--nothing that would take it away from being a fine driver. I put a bid on it, but then it went too high for me at the time. It went for $14,000. :-(. The truth was I had $10,000 and that was my limit at that time. Later, I had a shot to outright buy a Dual Ghia, but I passed on that one too...SMH.

I would love to meet Ian classic car specialist every thing about car old and new I my self are petrol head my current runabout is 2008 AUDI S8 with the V10 😎 but the older jags have been my thing Xjs and the dibble 6. . Wow that must be fun! I really enjoyed my Jaguar XK8 with 5 litre engine and enough luggage space to be a real grand tourer. Sadly nothing like it in their range today.

Iain among the top wrenches in the world, why not ask him a "real question" like when he goes to survey a prospective car for a client, what is he looking for ? shut lines, oil weepage, what ? Maybe Harry Metcalfe will do a better interview. again sorry. just sayin.
