Iain, that drivers view over the beautiful curvaceous bonnet near bought tears to the eyes of this "once upon a time" E type Jag owner. It is such a special car that was a privilege to own and drive for the 15 years we had it, totally reliable. It's the car I would indeed buy again if I was ever fortunate enough to have the spare finances, never to be forgotten. When I was a 15 year old school kid I got my backside into the seat of a brand new light metallic blue "E"type coupe in a dealer's showroom, I was summarily "tossed out" by the Dealer Principal. That was 1965, I swore that day I'd own one some day, 13 years later I was able to purchase a very tidy low mileage 8 year old Series 2 coupe that I kept and cherished for 15 years. The nicest, most exciting car I'll ever own. Unfortunately for the "E" type ownership, a wife and two little kids didn't fit too comfortably in it, so it was replaced with a beautifully kept, but older 1966 manual o/d 3.8 "S"type, the "Family sedan", all these lovely cars were so cheap back then. Thank you for the ride and the memories Iain.

As an over dampened fellow here in the States, I must tell you, I greatly enjoyed this episode. When I was 18 I got my first Alfetta GTV and I quickly learned that I must do my own work. I went to work for a foreign car mechanic as an apprentice. My boss had a 1974 E Type V12. What a car! One of my duties was to keep the car looking prestine including shining the wire wheels every day!. On occasion he would take me out for a ride. My first love. Jaguar. Thanks for the great videos and all the laughs.

I worked for Lucas in 1973 when the electronic PI was being developed for the Jaguar V12 engine. The problem was getting the injectors to properly cover the dynamic range from tickover to full revs and power. Hence the "funny" throttle linkage atop the carburetted engine as the stop-gap measure.

Back in 1964 I was an Engineer working in Jaguars Experimental Department in the Browns Lane Factory. I often got involved in special projects for Mr Heynes, Jaguars Chief Engineer, one of which was inJune / July 1964 when he asked me to run in the special semi lightweight E Type that had been built for for his friend Sir Robert Ropner. The car had a 35/40 cylinder head with triple webers and the lightweight type 5 speed ZF gearbox. As you can imangine, back in 1964 this was probably THE best road car ever built. Now, 60 years later it looks like it has a competitor, especially with its power steering, modified cluch and other mod cons. Well done and I look forward to hearing more. PS At that time we were experimenting with the Tecalemt Jackson Fuel Injection fitted to our unregistered Bronze FHC I seem to remember that was a quick car too.....

Hi Jono, Do you know how many of the original E Type Lightweights had Lucas mechanical fuel injection? I know they races one of the D Types at Le Mans in 1956 with injection, but it suffered from a split fuel line, and the Ecurie Ecosse car on Fuel injection won in 1957. My next door neighbour (Hugh now 102) was the team time keeper over that week, and has lots of memories to tell.
@jonoagustin870Ай бұрын
@@SNGBarratt The only one that I remember was the Coombs / Hill car 4 WPD which "lived" for a time in our garage at MIRA as a "semi works hack" which we used to try out different suspension set-ups. Most Lightweights that needed attention were delt with by the Service Department and the Experimental Dept only became involved if they couldnt resolve the problem. Two that come to mind were one that the owner used for Hill Climbs were he had a problem with cold brakes with the standard Ferodo DS11 pads. We changed the pads for the softer road pads and also fitted a vacuum resevoir. Problem solved. Another owner complained of high speed missfiring on road use and so after "softer" plugs and a check of its webers I took it to MIRA's No1 circuit for some 140mph + laps, no problem....which was more than could be said for the prototype Lola GT with my friend David Hobbs which never put in a lap whilst I was there...sad I really wanted to see it in action.

The first classic car I ever drove was my uncle’s Series II 4.2 roadster, although it wasn’t a classic the first time I “drove” it, sitting on his lap and steering it as a 4 year old. The car and I were the same age. Fast forward 12 years and I’d just got my licence when my uncle slipped me the keys of the Jag to drive on my own. There’s no doubt that car alone is responsible for the love I’ve had of cars my whole life. That view from the driver’s seat down that long, long bonnet, with the louvres and the hump is hard to beat.

Hi Iain, thanks for all you thoughts on the car and I loved the smile on your face whilst you were driving the car. We've been developing the Lucas fuel injection for over 2 years now. It has been quite a learning experience, starting off running the car in open loop, then moving to closed loop, both using wasted spark from the coil pack, and now finally running fully sequential ignition for the ultimate set -up. 50EE runs just as well on E10 as fully synthetic fuel, to future proof the car. The point of fuel injection is not the ultimate power (which carburetors can also achieve) but the delivery of that power in such a better smooth linear way through the full rev range. I think there will be a generational change coming soon to our Classic Car world, as the current (60 pluses like me) hand their cars on. Our children will want to drive these cars and will want them to be like their own motoring experience, with the driving feel of the cars they have been brought up with (not 3 or 4 speed box, heavy steering, spluttering, choke needing engines). I was brought up like so many doing my own maintenance, on what were relatively simple vehicles. My children never had that opportunity. Current and future mechanics won't know carburetors, but will be able to fix ECU's and injection. This Lucas system addresses all of the challenges of new fuels and environmental concerns whilst preserving the beauty and these cars. Our next development is to replace the water pump with an electric one controlled by the same ECU to banish over heating in traffic. (The pump circulating large volumes of coolant when static and ticking over when running along the open road. Thanks JP

Iain, yes, I did have a fondness for my 67 Black Jag with tan interior, the smell of wet carpet from disintegrating rubber, the switch gear ( bakelite and ceramic ) along with those dash wires all of which caught fire while driving one afternoon, the replacement starter, along with removal, the oil leaking from the cam covers following a cross member and dripping on the steering rack loosening the fasteners, the replacement leaking factory overflow water tank that had to be repaired, every couple of months having to place carpet under the car because of the Exxon Valdis engine leaking oil effect, the disintegrating rubber factory hoses, the two factory installed brazing rods leaded in to fill in the panel gap between the rocker panel and rear fender. However, there was this fantastic nasal roaring sound that only a Jag Six makes....when it was running and didn’t break down…other than all the above and some probably forgotten....it was simply wonderful to look at! Cheers!

My dad had a friend with a car lot in Atlanta which sold foreign cars. When I was five, my dad loaded me up for the car ride to go get his next car and we made the four hour trip. I had brought my savings which were in coins and likely less than a dollar; I do not recall why. Maybe my dad told me he needed money or wanted me to be part owner. He was likely to say either. We drove home in a white XKE with red leather interior. It was a 6-cylinder car, not sure of which engine but likely a Series I. I can recall him tuning the carbs, with bonnet tipped forward, using a carb synch tool. I had no understanding of what he was doing but I recognized the tool later in life. I also recall the profile of the SU carbs, so much sexier than the ZS ones. He sold the car a year or two later. He had found out the bonnet, should he need to replace it, would cost more than what he paid for the car. Subsequent cars included a rafts of MGs - several Bs and a TF 1500. There was the rare outlier such as a Volvo 122, Datsun 280Z and VWs. I must have caught the disease as some of my favorite memories are of my dad helping with one of the basket cases I had brought home. I fostered a Porsche 356, three 911s, an Alfa Giulia, Volvo 144s and an MGA. All but two of the 911s cost me less than $3k (the Alfa was $75!). Those days are gone now. My dad has passed and we drive Toyotas and Hondas now. Nothing really stirs the blood in the new stuff that we regular folks can afford to own, although you could afford to buy them (thanks to depreciation). I just sold a TR6 that I bought on the cheap. Maybe a Honda S2000 might be the trick; so few choices from the modern catalog. Jaguar certainly has nothing exciting on the way - just weirdness.

Seeing you get into that E-type gave me a flashback to the first time that I sat behind the wheel of one. That was a Series 1 fixed-head coupe and it was quite a puzzle how and in what order to insert legs arms torso and head. It was a few years later that I could tick the most famous Jaguar off my driving bucket list. It wasn't a long or fast drive but I'm glad it was in a Series 1, 3.8-litre car on the correct tyres. Few cars in my experience have felt as alive (in a good way) as that one did. It had some of the most beautiful steering that I have ever used, giving a perfect sense of what was happening down at the tyres' contact patches. Nor did it seem excessively heavy, even when going slowly, and I can't quite believe anyone would find power steering necessary. Since then, I've driven two more, 4.2-litre E-types (a late S1 and a S2) and two Series 3 V12s. By some quirk of fate the sixes were all fixed-head and the V12s were both convertibles. Although neither of the 4.2s steered quite as nicely as the 3.8 and the V12s, with their power steering and (for their time) fat tyres were a different matter. I can understand why people might call the S3 steering too light, but I didn't find it objectionable. Overall, I'm glad I've had quite a good exposure to the E-type (and also to other cars of its time) as it is a car that really is very special.

My father was a 'triple Class 1' driving instructor for the Metropolitan Police Driving School at Hendon in the 60s. They had Triumph 2500 PI's on the Advanced Wing, but the fuel injection was really problematic, so the police fleet helped Triumph resolve many problems because of the high mileage covered in such a short time. I had a '67 4.2 roadster in my early-20's (1976~80). I regret selling it, but it was time for a change then. This was a teary trip down Memory Lane. I love my recently acquired Miata even more now.

The XK six cylinder is the engine that made Jaguar, then saved Jaguar. When they didn't have the funding to release the XJ40 and roll out the AJ6 across the product line in the 70s and early 80s, the old XK got fuel injection and soldiered on in sedans into the mid 80's, delivering smooth, generous low and midrange torque. I always thought the XK just needed longer intake runners to suit it's long stroke and modest redline to really make it special. The stock XK cylinder head was already close to perfect for the engine.

Wonderful car. A friend of mine who purchased a mk 2 e-type decided it was too modern & sold it pretty quickly and went back to an xk 140!

I owned an Alfa Romeo Montreal, in the 1970,s. It had Bosch fuel injection on 2.4 litre ( I think ) , V8. The fuel injection system had an altitude control. It was an lovely car to drive. It was a head to head competitor with the Ferrari Dino.

Spica fuel injection. Great car the Montreal

Lovely, from an era when Jaguar was still making beautiful works of art instead of whatever it is they are after these days.

@@iain_tyrrell Yeah, it's mismanagement of the highest level. Instead of focusing on building beautiful well designed reliable cars, they shut down all their factories and went for a "rebrand" which frankly is totally ridiculous and out of touch with their customer base. How to destroy a legendary brand in 30 seconds. It's the polar opposite of the restoration of the Notre Dame in Paris, which was done beautifully and respecting the hundreds of years of craftmanship. I can only shake my head.

S N G Barratt are an excellent company. They supplied many of the obscure parts required to keep my Jaguar Mark 2 on the road. I weep for what Jaguar have become under their current management.

The sound of the straight 6 in the opening shot! What a fantastic noise. I have no problem with improving the classic car to improve drive ability and usability, anything is better than some heathen replacing the engine with batteries and an electric motor out of a Tesla.

I'm always of a mixed opinion when it comes to updating classic cars. The original series 1 E type with the 3 SU carburetors was beautiful to behold I have to admit from the time I was 14 to 18 I lusted for an E type jaguar My idea of a perfect Saturday afternoon's entertainment was to take the bus downtown and sit in one of those wonderful cars talking with the salesman. They tolerated me because I had the sense to discreetly leave when a prospect came into the showroom. For my birthday at age 16 one of them gave me a ride in a 63 British racing green roadster Although it lasted only 20 minutes I can remember to this day looking down that long snout of a hood with the louvers as he was down shifting One of my minor regrets in life is not having a little more sense of adventure in my cars at an early age as in the 70s when these could be had for a few thousand dollars the maintenance requirement scared me off Like having to lift the engine out of the car to change the clutch But anyway if you're going to do some retrofitting at least make it nice enough to believe that this is what Sir William Lyons would have done had the technology been available And I think that this car passed with flying colors. A beautiful job

My all time favourite car, worked on one which had a faulty electronic ignition module but never got to drive it, maybe one day.

I had a Porsche 914. It had the jet Tronic system. It never worked correctly, especially in cold weather we took it out and replaced it with a four barrel Holly carburetor. . Fantastic results but I understand it was early technology when it worked correctly. It was fantastic.

Retro fit fuel injection on old cars brings them up to date big time .I run a Holley Sniper self learning EFi on my 79 Cadillac and a Gear Vendors over/under drive on the Turbo 400 automatic which makes it into a 6 speed .Great economy on a run and more power .Didn't Jaguar use a GM Turbo 400 automatic gearbox ?
