Kahuku is considered a part of the North Shore of Oʻahu, as is neighboring Lāʻie where the Polynesian Cultural Center and Brigham Young University are located. These small towns have a large population of Polynesians/Melanesians that are Mormon and many work at the PCC. The Kahuku High School football team is nationally ranked and many NFL players are alumni, as well as chef Sam Choy and singer-songwriter Jack Johnson. There is immense pride in their schools and the cultural traditions of the people in the community as you can see from this little glimpse of what the senior class helped put together for Iam when they learned he would be coming to back to Hawaiʻi for his Homecoming. Iʻm sure Colin and Megan were also warmly welcomed back by their hometowns, but as you said, even though Iam no longer lives in Hawaiʻi, he is embraced and supported by the whole state, and he is still considered our Local Hero. Hawaiʻi will always be his Home.

Kahuku Red Raider For Life...RRFL! The person who filmed I believe is Larry Lau--a long-time Kahuku resident. The haka the football boys perform is a specific haka that was composed by a Maori member of the community for the Kahuku football team. The high school is tiny, yet produces a ton of talent (Jack Johnson is from Kahuku and many, many NFL players).

Iʻm sure you have seen many of the news stories and videos of the concert, but Iʻd like to share this one because it highlights comments by Iamʻs mom Lillie and what Kawika Kahiapo, well-known Hawaiian singer-songwriter and slack-key guitar player, said about him and new "Uncles" like Jack Johnson and John Cruz adopting Iam and planning to mentor him and guide him in the direction he needs to go. Thatʻs exactly what Iʻve been hoping for all this time. These successful artists and others like Paula Fuga , who often performs with Jack and John, are actively involved in the Mana Maoli/Mana Mele programs for music education in the schools, especially the Hawaiian charter schools. I think Iʻve shared with you some of the collaboration videos like the one with "Island Style." If anyone wants more info or more videos by the organization, just let me know. The leis at Hawai’i graduation is a normal thing. Depending on how many friends and family you have, you could have leis enough to cover your neck or you’d have a family member holding all your leis that can’t fit around your head anymore. Lol. It’s an awesome experience that I think every graduate should experience!!

You can always tell the graduates. Just look for the walking trees. 😉 From personal experience I’ve found that the carnation leis smell nice, but those are also HEAVY.

They did officially gave him a diploma from Kahuku high school saying that he has fulfilled all the requirements to graduate 🎓 there was a longer version of this in a another video. But yeah the reason for all the leis is because he officially became a high school graduate from Kahuku.
