I watched this game in Tallahassee in the dorms with about 35 people crowded around the TV. When our last drive ended, and we lined up to punt, we were disappointed because we thought Clemson would have a short field and maybe get a FG. No one deserved to lose that game. We were not expecting a trick play. When Leroy Butler got the ball and got around the corner we EXPLODED I am shocked we didn't knock the roof off. That was Bobby Bowden and FSU football you had to watch it was amazing all through the 80's and 90's. Clemson was deadly that year and came to Tally the next year, in 1989, and tricked FSU on a special teams play and won. FSU fell way behind then had a huge unbelievably rally that fell short when a FB fumbled late in the game. Like I said, that was FSU football the games were epic win or lose.

I am a forever Tennessee Vols fan. We were fortunate enough to beat Bowden in 1998 for the title. God love you Bobby, you were such a fabulous coach and you were damn good for college football. Nothing but love and respect to you and those awesome FSU teams you created. Hoping both of our programs return to glory, and we both have one thing in common: utter hatred for the Florida Gators. :)

My Gators beat y'all every year of St. Peyton's career, then y'all (behind Tee Martin) took it out on the Noles...

@@BigBlackRod we had to take out a lot of anger from that 5 game streak. We had a great team but yall were loaded. Was at the game in 1998 where we finally won in overtime and partied like it was 1999 ;)

@@michaelmclaughlin3837 I really wish y'all were good right now. I really loved playing the Vols, not because we were winning (although that helped), but because of the atmosphere. We didn't like each other, but we respected each other. Plus, our first Heisman winner, Steve Spurrier, came from Tennessee, as well as a pretty could coach, Doug Dickey...
@michaelmclaughlin38374 жыл бұрын
@@BigBlackRod agreed. Dickey really was good to UT. Did some great things as athletic director. Think we are finally turning the corner back to being competitive. Made some awful coaching decisions post Fulmer but I think Pruitt is righting the ship. Hope im right. Good luck on your season. Go Vols

I'm a Clemson fan. I was 20 years old when this happened. The punter completely faked me out and I actually thought we were going to win this game. At this time I hated Coach Bowden. As I grew older, I learned more about him and what he stood for. The more I learned, the more I admired him. I have total respect for him and his son Tommy. My son attended Tommy Bowden football camps growing up and I used to ease drop and watch from a distance. What Tommy Bowden and a young Dabo Swinney taught those young kids went beyond football. RIP Coach Bowden and thank you Tommy and Dabo for being apart of my son's childhood.

Bobby always had fun. He was willing to do something deep in his own territory, that few coaches would attempt - especially against a good opponent, in a tie game. A few years Later, I went to a Clemson-FSU game in Death Valley, but the Seminoles crushed the Tigers in that one. A great atmosphere, but FSU OWNED the ACC for a decade until UVA final,y beat them I Charlottesville on a Thursday night. Always fun to watch Bowden's team.

I met Coach Bowden in 1972 at a Men's Prayer Breakfast at our church in Saint Albans, West Virginia. I was 8 years old, attending with one of my brother's and my father. He was still our Mountaineers coach.A fine Christian man and so genuine and kind. CFB lost a legend today!!

Had butler scored a TD, clemson at least had time to score a tying TD. Him getting tackled inside the 5 was a great thing for FSU. RIP to coach bowden and anybody else involved in his masterpiece of a game between 2 titans.

I've seen a lot of trick plays and well I'm not that old I'm 27 but I thought in my opinion the best trick play was the Boise State lateral vs Oklahoma in 2008 and then the play afterwards and also oregon Dennis Dixon the statue of liberty, but the puntrooskie definitely beats both by alot
@nickbrown91633 жыл бұрын
I was a boy of 13 or 14. On the game broadcast the camera wasn't on Butler. The footage here is of an alternate camera. In other words the camera was on the wrong guy for 2 or 3 seconds. It was crazy. You know it's a true trick play when you fool the camera man.

Bowden has to be one of the dirtiest con-men in the history of college football, but he is also one of the funniest con-men in the history of college football. Like a charming 1870’s riverboat gambler who helps a lady into the boat but steals her bracelet at the same time.
