Hi Friends! In today's video I'm playing with the idea of downsizing my luxury collection and only keeping one luxury item in each category. We're discussing what I'd hold on to if I could only keep one luxury item in each category of my luxury wardrobe from handbags, through small leather goods, and clothes to shoes. Let's chat about the best luxury bag to buy, the best piece of designer clothing to invest in, and whether designer accessories are truly worth the money. If you decided to sell your entire luxury collection and become a luxury minimalist what pieces would you keep?

My keepers (just 1 in each category is HARD!): My one shoe to keep would be my Chanel ballet flats in beige with black cap toe. My one bag would be my navy K28 with gold hardware. My one jewelry piece (besides my wedding rings) would be my diamond hoop earrings that I had custom made to perfectly match my wedding band for my 10th wedding anniversary (BTW, I've been wearing my Hermes punk ring and bracelet 24/7 since I got them - great suggestion/thank you!).

I like the look of a Birkin. For me, the folder over flap is more sophisticated in design terms than a Kelly, but in the end the lack of a shoulder strap would put me off ever buying one. I would opt for the Kelly every time if I was in the market for a bag at that price point. Thank you for the video!

I would love to see a what’s in my bag video! Also would you do an entire bag collection? You said in this video you don’t own any clemence leather. Is that by choice? Would you refuse it if you were offered it? My items to keep from Hermes are the calvi card holder and the birkin 30 - these are the pieces that work the best for me. I love that the calvi is so compact and I only carry cards around now. I love the fact the B30 is always open and easy to get your things out of. If I can add one more it would be a cashmere/silk 140cm scarf. I just love them so much, essential pieces in my wardrobe 😘

You got it 🙋🏻‍♂️ I'll be doing an updated what's in my bag video in the next couple of weeks 🧡 I don't think so, I much prefer doing videos on one piece at a time. While the difference is subtle, I've always preferred and requested bags in Togo. I find Togo ages better as it has just a tad more body and hold to it than Clemence. You chose well 🙌 The Calvi is such a phenomenally functional piece 🤩

@@IamGPS This may sound silly but I had this thought the other day and I wonder what you do with a Birkin in the same scenario. I was in a restroom in a restaurant and they did not have any space to set the handbag down. Since I had the Kelly, I just put it on my shoulder while I washed my hands. But what do you do with the Birkin in the same situation? When I am with my spouse, I could give it to him to hold before I go on. However, for work events or time with friends I would have to bring it in and I would not know where to set it while I wash. What would a Birkin do? :)

@@KraftyPaws I really do wonder. I have a Kelly 32 and the strap has been vital in keeping it in great condition safely. Squeezing such a bag between my legs is just not practical for me, and also not secure in some places I travel. My garden party has no shoulder strap, but the handles are longer than the Birkin so I can put it up under my armpit for washing my hands or other hands free moments. Also, the leather on the Garden Party is very durable on the bottom, so I worry less about brief moisture exposure.

What an interesting video which says a lot about your personal tastes! I agree and totally understand why you mentionned your Tom Ford jacket. The very rare occasions I wear my vintage Gucci jackets, compliments can't stop. Strangely, I don't reach for them anymore and I am instead totally into my Chanel jackets/coats. That's why I think, in a close future, your newly acquired Chanel black jacket may give your tuxedo jacket a run for its money. Here you go again with the Hermès gold rings. I am so obsessed with them that I can't stop promoting them on other luxury channels. After the Galop in rose gold, I was thinking of getting a white gold ring from them soon. Still haven't decided on which one to get... They are all beautiful and so versatile. I do think boots or Chelsea boots do suit you much better than sneakers: they just seem to make your legs appear so long! Holding the Kelly wallet as a clutch is a good idea. The only con is that one can't put any essentials in. I am not surprised you chose the Kelly over the Birkin as you are the type who likes to be hands free and comfy. Both are equally beautiful though. I am quite stunned to see how low it falls on you. Did you add a bracelet to lengthen the strap? I dream to wear mine crossbody for a more relaxed look and I am 178cm with broad shoulders. Do you have any idea of where I could find a strap that will suit the Kelly 35? Oh yeah, I almost forgot to tell you something. Went to have lunch at an old friend from high school house today: his mother was and is still raising horses for racing in Enghien les Bains, near Paris. I asked him over lunch how Hermès products were perceived in the equestrian world. He answered: "Just like a show-off support". He said from a purist's point of view, their quality and services have nothing more than some smaller well-established and much cheaper artisans' from the equestrian world. Horse riding being an outdoor activity, using boots or a saddle made with the most refined leather is totally pointless since it will be quickly damaged by mud, sea water, rain....which is a total waste of money since raising and maintaining a horse is already very costly (at least 2500€ a month here in France). He concluded by claiming that the equestrian world being a sort of a priviledged circle, some of their members just need Hermès stuffs to show off how much more successful they are, compared to their competitors, team members, neighbors... Everything he said did just destroy the Hermès mythology actually. The next time I will listen to the speech of a Hermès SA (especially those operating at the equestrian section), I will for sure receive it from a totally different perspective.

I've been following your comments on this thread with interest. My father was Paul van R. He was married when he was young and had a daughter (me) and a son. Later in life, he "switched to the other team", as he said. My father was an accomplished horseman and rode both English and western style. He preferred western, but rode competitively in dressage and jumping events (English style) in his youth. He would have found your friend's comments about Hermes equestrian gear interesting. My father's breeches, show shirts, and show coats were generally German or French (usually Hermes). His show boots were John Lobb (Paris Lobb only and owned by Hermes). This was accepted attire in show riding, but he always felt a little self-conscious and called it "playing dress-up". My father lived part of the year in Los Angeles and generally rode English here. He actually preferred Hermes competition boots for riding in LA, but would agree with your friend that wearing too much of Hermes equestrian gear and using Hermes tack was pretentious. Hermes charges about $300 for a hoof pick and leather case; you can get a perfectly serviceable one at any tack store for about $12.95. My father was most at home riding western in jeans and Frye boots (which cost about 1/20th the price of Lobbs). For English style saddles, my father often used a German one, but, snob appeal aside, did like the completely custom service offered by Hermes. His last saddle from Hermes was completed less than two years ago, and he was able to specify the inclusion of lateral splints that would help distribute the rider's weight more evenly on his horse's back. Although they're much heavier, western saddles distribute the rider's weight much more evenly than an English saddle, and spinal damage to older horses often occurs when traditional English saddles are used. This is an area where Hermes tack has the capacity to be superior equestrian gear. Horses were my father's life, and I have to say something about a conversation here from quite a while ago. In a discussion of Hermes bag charms, my father politely demurred from expressing an opinion on GPS's preference for the Rodeo charm. My father would never criticize someone's aesthetic preference and would only object to something on utilitarian grounds. But he thought the Rodeo charm was awful, since he said it looked like a donkey, not a horse. Hermes incorporates representations of horses in so many things and my father thought most of them were wonderful. One of the last things he got from Hermes, and loved, was the Arion sculpture. I'd bet that if he could only pick one Hermes decorative object to keep, it would be the Arion. He said it incorporated both ancient Greek and Chinese influences and was a truly beautiful object. But that Rodeo charm really made him cringe!

@MK, Glad to hear you enjoyed the concept of this video 🙌 I think you might be right, once I have the Chanel blazer tweaked it might just become my new favorite 🤩 As for Hermès' fine jewelry, I warned you their creations are addictive 😉 You could check out some of their "double tour" rings which combine some of their most iconic designs in one 💎 I find the Kelly wallet perfect for days when I'm running quick errands, as it fits more than you'd think. On top of cards and cash, it easily fits a phone, keys and even some hand sanitizing wipes. No, I used the original strap that comes with the Kelly in this video without any "trickery" but I didn't put it crossbody 😉 It's funny you should say that. I've found the perfect alternative straps for the Kelly but unfortunately the business is currently catching up on orders based on their website, but as soon as they're open to taking new orders I'll do a video on them. 🙋🏻‍♂️ That's so interesting, thank you for sharing this insight. I must admit, I'm not utterly shocked to hear this. Just like Hermès' other creations, some buy it to show off, others choose to purchase their pieces out of pure appreciation for the brand and there's nothing wrong with either one. Everyone should be entitled to spend their own money as they please. Hermès' craftsmanship is exceptional across the board but as your friend pointed out, if you try hard enough you can find comparable quality at lower prices.

@@IamGPS Thank you for your message. I spent a while this past weekend trawling through your site, looking for my dad's comments. It's really clear you gave him a lot of enjoyment and I have to say his messages sound just like him. I don't really share his love of Hermes, but I do have several pieces he gave to me. I work in the film business in LA. The kind of people who work in this milieu prefer Hermes if they're in-front-of-the-camera types. Behind the scenes people, like me, go for clothing and leather goods from The Row, especially if they're younger. I don't know if you've ever talked about The Row, but that's more my style.

@@kvanr5095 Sorry to reply that late but I was so busy at work this morning. I couldn't be any happier to get to know you. How funny it is, I saw some of your dad's traits right away (the straight to the point facet) in your writing and in the way you express yourself. Yes, Iast fall until last US presidential voting day, I used to exchange with your dad on a very regular basis (at least twice a week). We started to talk about Hermès of course, but it did very quickly shift to other various topics, such as Brokeback Mountain, Montana, your grand-ma's past Parisian life, political colors among our populations, American VS European lifestyle...He spoke such an elegant and classy French, had such a deep knowledge of our country that my friends and I were awaiting his comments with huge excitement each time. It felt like anticipating the weekly episode of an imaginary awesome TV show featuring Jodie Foster, whose French is very similar to your dad's and uncle's!!! Although I had never asked him any private questions, I kinda quickly knew your dad have had many lives coz he seemed to relate a lot to the synopsis of Brokeback Mountain, and I also sensed he used to feel like an outsider among his Montana's fellow people. I was totally hearbroken when I receveid his touching farewell message. I still remember I got it on a thursday night and he passed away the following saturday. It was a true honor, if not one of my best memories of 2020, to get to know him. Yes, I remember his tastes used to differ to those of GPS. Sometimes, our "ménage à 3" like debates were very animated. It was more due to a generational gap, I think and I told your dad so. He completely agreed. He was 57, I am 42, GPS must be in his late 20s or early 30s. This was exactly the reason why our exchanges were very funny/ interesting. We used to learn a lot from each other. Your dad was a pure Hermès purist: he didn't care about the newest trends, he just used to appreciate beauty on its own. I remember the discussion about the rodeo bag charms. He found them ridiculous, GPS was all about them and I still think they look like toddlers toys, even though I own one myself: it had been gifted to me by my cousin from Hong Kong 3 years ago. She thought the gift would have been appropriate for me since my Chinese astrological sign is horse. I have worn it only once... All in all, those charms were just a trend aimed at making fast bucks (Asian customers love those kind of "cute" little things), but the hype seems to be slowly dying. I can see why he thought the Arion Horses did incorporate Greek and Chinese influences. I have, however, a softer spot, for Guerlain's Marly horses, which are more majestic and have more of French Louis XIV's vibes. I will for sure forward your take on equestrian gear to my friend. It will give him a chance to 1) practice his English 2) debate about it with his mother (she is the one running the race horses ranch) and I won't fail to report their response to you! Thank you by the way for providing another very technical expertise on Hermès saddles: my perspective has sort of changed again since yesterday! I think it will also be a pleasure if you keep on exchanging with us. You seem to be as knowledgeable about Hermès as your dad used to be!
