Just a heads up! U might already know this but I'll throw this out there! If you would of crossed your trailer chains, the chains would of caught your trailer hitch before hitting the ground! If your chains aren't long enough then lengthen them!!! It will save you from disaster! Imagine if your receiver broke at a higher speed let's say on the interstate!? In fact here in Pa, you can get a fine if chains are not crossed! Just a little heads up! Love the vids!

I agree.. make it solid, be heavy but it won't bend as easy as that open box. When you can extend the trailer tongue, reinforce it by making triangles. Link it back to the frame. [__]►--○|[__]_)

Door Handle -- Take that one screw out and look behind. You will see two metal rods that connect the door latch + door lock. There are small plastic clips that break, which might be found at autozone? but on amazon for sure. Temp fix = Use the plastic clip from the lock to replace the broken clip and fix the door latch. been there done that.

Jake, it looks like your spring shackles in the rear of the jeep are bottomed out on the frame and not hitting the bump stops.Not allowing the spring to flex out flat. Get Izzy to bounce up and down on the back and see if the spring is hitting the frame. If that’s the case longer shackles are needed. U need longer rear shackles ASAP. More broken parts are on the horizon especially with the added tongue weight of the trailer.

I kinda seen that setup not working for long because of it changing where the weight distribution would be. I believe if you adjust the trailer to be longer instead of the hitch being longer it'll work out much better. these are the thing that create the memories though! if you didn't break it then you wouldn't have a story to tell later.

And the receiver is the thing that the ball hitch slides into. You broke the ball hitch or in your case "pintle hitch.. Not the receiver. I saw that coming also. I build trailers for a living. I didn't say anything because my comments go un-noticed most of the time anyhow. Glad you kept the old hitch with you.
@fataxe1

It's because it induces a bending moment. If he put some riggers that mount to the bottom of the bumper it would triangulate it and work. Extending the trailer might make it handle weird.

Hate to hop on the "told you so" crowd but I was just talking to a friend at work about how long that "extension" would last. I bet it would have been until at least the first use of it on a downward departure angle but didn't even last that long. The physics of the stress are done for you - unhitch the trailer to open the gate. This was a shock to no one really, just happy it didn't happen at fifty five and throw that loaded trailer into traffic. Good luck with some more thought out fixes - great channel and have followed you from the start.

Just move the spare and the trasharoo to the trailer. You already have a spare mount on top of the trailer. If you loose the original lunette(correct name for the hitch ring) then you will loose the pivot ability of that setup unless you go to a hitch made specifically for off-roading.

Hey Jake, Expedition Overland fixed this problem by splitting their swing out in half in the middle. They are able to open the swing out with their trailer on the hitch because the 2 swing outs are half as wide. Also that windshield is going to get you pulled over eventually.

It's definitely a good idea to cross your chains from your trailer to your truck. Left chain to right hook, right chain to left hook. It will helps center the trailer and keep it from jerking left and right in the event that it comes loose. In some states this is required by law.
@jessetate6244

Looking at it again, your chains are very close to each other on your trailer, so it shouldn't make much difference, but it's probably still a good idea.

Hey I'm loving your adventure! You are living my dream! Pushing the hitch so far out, it was bound to happen. Expected either the bumper mount bolts to shear from the torque or the hitch tubing itself. Guess we found the weakest link. Lot of leverage working against that setup, especially if the trailer was tongue heavy

Hey Jake, I'm sure you've got pleanty of suggestions, but if you want to make it possible for you to open your rear door, you should extend the length of your trailer hitch. This will give you the support and strength you need. Theres too much stress on the receiver And the longer you make the receiver the more stress is added to the jeep. So many “I knew it would break” comments. Quite frankly, you are lucky the tube broke before it twisted your hitch down. Now, if the attachment to the jeep is sturdy, and that’s not common in jeeps, you can get a thick wall reviver, or even a solid receiver, to prevent this from happening. A much better route is changing the spare tire/rear rack to allow a normal receiver and avoid the abnormal hitch setup. Good luck down the road.

Sorry for your troubles Jake. I didn't realize they used such thin walled tubing to make that extension. May I suggest relocating the gear and spare from the back of Jade to the trailer?. That would allow for off road clearance and put the joint back where it needs to be. I know it means rethinking storage. But this could have been very catastrophic. You were very fortunate that this happened at the specific moment that it did.

I knew that extension was going to fail just looking at it. Was just a matter of time. Extending the trailer is a much better idea and should last a long time.

2:41 look into that, Wednesday I bought a truck, Thursday I drove it home. Spokane to Portland it showed me 17mpg, I purchased a 2400# unladen flatbed trailer in Portland and headed south, 18mpg until I got to the hills, clearly trailers should improve your fuel economy. Perhaps your Flux capacitor is defunct?

I saw this being installed and sort of figured it was a bad design. Lots of leverage on the Jeep and bad weight distribution. Hopefully the next mod shop will extend the trailer tongue.

Leverage. The long extension put too much leverage on it greatly increasing the tongue weight the square tubing was under. I was gonna comment when you had it built. Now I feel like I wish I had. I saw this coming. Good thing you kept the original hitch. Hopefully the new fix will work, but I would skip it. I would keep the short hitch, and drop the trailer at camp. Keep in mind this is also adding stress to the receiver on Jade. That leverage is torquing down on Jade's receiver/bumper like a much heavier trailer. A longer hitch system will also effect your off road performance by taking away your departure angle.

The receiver is on the bumper and the hitch slides into it, you broke the bar on the hitch extension, it should be much thicker, probably solid steel with that much extension!

Man if you had come to the machine shop where I work, I could’ve made that extended hitch out of solid billet steel!! At least you had your back up!
@insaynbcr
@insaynbcr 6 жыл бұрын
And that would have effectively changed nothing. Sure the extension itself could take more abuse, but the leverage on the bumper would be the same, and now with the added weight of solid steel, rather than tube steel. The area where the hitch attaches to the bumper would be the next area to fail, then the bumper or bumper mounts would be next. The correct way to fix this is to extend the trailer tongue, and use triangulation from box corners out towards the tongue tip.

Hi Jake, interesting video. But I was really worried, your title is a little wrong: I thought your receiver broke (the square hole by the bumper). That would have been a real bummer. Worse than having the tongue extension break. Like the other guys say, make the trailer tongue longer. Also, cross your chains.
@sifilmaker
@sifilmaker 6 жыл бұрын
That was pretty predictable. When yo extend the shaft, you increase the stress at the attachment point. Glad you were able to fix it quickly. good luck

I only got about 25% of the audio. :( A lot of us saw this coming. If you want more distance between the Jeep and trailer you need to extend the trailer tongue with proper gauge square tube steel. If you come to northern NV I'd be happy to do this for you. However, you would probably be better off relocating your spare to the trailer and leaving the short tongue for an overall shorter rig. A longer trailer, although easier to back up, could give you trouble off road.

Not surprised. The trailer isn't light as a feather, and that thing is too unstable, meaning is it too long to be like that without lateral supports. It may work out when you are pulling, because the forces go down the trailer and try to "pull apart" the base of the extension, which should hold up, but if you're reversing you're pushing the extension towards the Jeep, and at any slight angle it's easy to get some leaver action that will bend and snap the extension. Same thing could have happened with powerful wind from the side on a motorway, because the hinge would be "pushed" to the side and be under bending forces. Also, if you extend the trailer, don't make the same mistake: if possible make some side supports that go from the outmost part of the extension to the frame at an angle. Using also a not-hollow metal wound help a lot, because it will be stronger to lateral forces and even if it bends, it will do that more "evenly" and it will be more unlikely to snap.

iamjake thank you for replying! That said, I want to point out that by no means I am an expert about trailers, just pointed out logical arguments and some basic physics, so if someone that works in the industry has better advice, go for it. Also I don't want to say that that extension was bad or anything, because the guys that made it for you were really doing something just to help you and probably thought it should hold up fine, but apparently it just wasn't good enough for your application. Good luck with finding a replacement and the prosecution of the trip!

Dang man! That sucks, but I questioned that extension tube's strength at that distance. Hopefully the trailer side extension will fix it. Be sure to beef it up! Another alternative could be to mount the spare on the trailer rear? Could free up the space behind Jade a bit. Great videos and can't wait to meet up with ya in my state!
