Sheboygan is the "Bratwurst Capital" of the world, and you mustn't forget Door County has more shoreline than any other county in the US - over 250 miles. Although I have never been able to confirm this, so take it as "Milwaukee urban legend", but US Bank struck some kind of deal with the legislature, presumably, which lead to a law which would make the US Bank Center the tallest building in the State because nothing could be built higher as the law imposed a ceiling.

Mark Jones To be honest Upstate NY and Parts of Midwest are very similar and I enjoyed both my stays. The changes I have noticed are very subtle. The town culture is more in Midwest. There are a lot of cute, beautiful small towns less than an hour away from the city. This meant I could work in the city and come home to a more laid back, rural community.

I didn't read through all the comments, but Wisconsin does have one national park, Apostle Islands National Lakeshore as well as Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest. Also, both states include the beautiful North Country national scenic Trail. But Wisconsin is the only state in the country to house an entire National Scenic Trail entirely within its borders; a 1,200 mile trail that runs along the last glacial push from 15,000 years ago, named the Ice Age Trail.

As a Wisconsinite from western Wisconsin, I can tell you the "bubbler" thing is really just eastern Wisconsin. Western WI says "drinking fountain," but is familiar with the term bubbler. We also say "pop" and "soda" interchangeably. I'd say it's pretty evenly split,, and in fact so many of my Minnesota-born friends say "soda" that I would've thought Minnesota says "soda" and Wisconsin says "pop." A neat term both states use is "ope," (sounds like "hope" without the H). "Ope" is "oh" and "oops" (or "whoops") combined and is generally used in situations like accidentally running into someone or being in someone's way. A term that is fading away is calling ATMs "Tyme machines." No, not the "Back to the Future" type, but rather the original ATM that long ago dominated the market before ATMs really took off: TYME (Take Your Money Everywhere). This is much the same as when people call all facial tissues "Kleenexes" or how people in Texas call all soda pop "Coke." Lastly, I've only ever heard "Sconnie" in a derogatory fashion. Most people I know just say "Wisconsinite."

An Eau Claire resident here. What the fuck is a bubbler?
@leepacoindustries556 жыл бұрын
A bubbler is a drinking fountain...the term is mostly used in and around Milwaukee and in the eastern part of the state.
@raestalgia6 жыл бұрын
I have to agree with leepacoindustries,as a former Wisconsinite(Originally from Milwaukee), that term,a bubbler,is mostly used around Milwaukee. You go anywhere else around the state and ask for the bubbler, people will either give you weird looks,or they just say "Oh, you're from Milwaukee". As far as calling a soft drink a pop,or a soda, I've never heard people in Wisconsin refer to a soft drink as a pop. It was always called a soda. However, I do remember ATMs being called TYME machines,but man, the last time I've heard them called that was back in the 1980's. Another thing is I've never heard the word oops pronounced as ope, but then again that might be because of where I grew up. Also one more thing,what is a Sconnie? This is the first time I've ever heard that word. Just my thoughts.
@leepacoindustries556 жыл бұрын
In western Wisconsin (Eau Claire and Menomonie areas especially) they say pop instead of soda. also I think the term sconie was a term given to wisconites by Minnesotans, because I hear the word sconie alot more in MN than I do in WI.
@austinlester56766 жыл бұрын
As a Minnesotan I can confirm 1) ope is used everywhere by everyone in Minnesota and Western Wisconsin at least the places I've been 2) the term "sconnie's" is what we tend to call wisconsinites but more so used with the younger crowd, it's more of a term that's only been around in recent years also the Packers suck

Adding on: although it's not a massive industry compared to the rest of the general workforce, and definitely doesn't come close to competing with cities like New York, LA, and Chicago, there's actually a pretty large number of artists in Minnesota, especially compared with Wisconsin. I have the more experience in the animation industry specifically, which is surprisingly large in the twin cities for a metropolitan area that large. Though a lot of it is ad-work, there are also studios who have worked on a variety of projects, lots of freelancers (such as myself) and all of it is actually very well-connected, with monthly animation events to show off projects and discuss new software and techniques. I actually didn't know how early on computers became such a big industry in Minnesota, but after you said that, I would not at all be surprised if the two weren't related in some way. But, as you mentioned, you can also see examples of the arts in the music industry, which includes the obvious densities in urban areas, but also music festivals in more rural areas, which can get surprisingly large for the area, such as Shangri-La at Harmony Park outside Albert Lea (and I actually know the guy who runs the place). Similar music festivals happen in Wisconsin, but the rural ones especially don't get nearly as big. -Someone born and raised in Wisconsin (though I had family in MN) who lives in Minnesota now.

Born and raised in Minnesota up until age 13. Been in western Wisconsin ever since. Big difference to me is that in my opinion Wisconsin is just more scenic. A lot more bluffs and hills, generally more interesting topograpghy. A lot of MN is flat and boring.

I am an Easterner who has lived in both WI and MN. Some comparisons: WI is mostly German, MN is mostly Scandinavian. You only hear folks say "yah, you betcha" in MN. WI industry is primarily manufacturing (in Milwaukee area) and paper up north; MN has many huge Fortune 500 company headquarters in food, technology and medical and the Twin Cities is a very sophisticated area. I think that Minneapolis is the cleanest city in America. Minneapolis prides itself on its many theaters and is a major cultural hub of the Midwest. People in both states are very friendly. Minnesotans are fanatic about staying in shape and everyone belongs to fitness clubs. I think that's why they live so long.

Where i live we used to call the ones on the street bubblers. most of them are old and make a burbling sound, either from bubbles in the water coming up, or the sound it makes hitting the cast-iron basin. whichever, most of them have been taken out since 2006

Nah, as a Minnesotan I think Wisconsin has alot going for it. But I think its business vs recreation. You come to the cities for high end work and we go to Wisconsin to party but we also go to Dakota to fish more (no limit)
