How to Unlock Your Car Using a Coat Hanger

Locked my keys in my car last night and watched a video on how to "break" into your car using a coat hanger. I figured it would be harder than it was and wanted to make a video showing just how easy it is to get into a Ford Festiva. Counting getting into the car last night, this was only my second time attempting this.
Use this knowledge for good. Comes in handy should you ever lock your keys in your car. From what I've seen it should work on most cars made before 2000. Also watch this video and realize just how easy someone can get into your car. Don't leave valuables in your car...especially not in the open.

My nephew is visiting and he just started his car about an hour ago, gets out to clean the ice off the window and locks the door behind him lol. This video just helped me in a big way this morning. I started the car and left it running to warm the engine. And the door got locked. This was the first it has ever happened. We tried without success to get car assistance from the insurance company for 40 minutes. When that didn't work I finally came here and found this. It took only a few minutes after to open the car. Thank you! My wife was an hour late for work and my son reached school on time for his final examination. This video helped. I know there are people who use it negatively, which is very unfortunate but this was a very positive help for us in our time of need.

Hey I just want to take the time to thank you. You have no idea how stressful it was when I realized that my '84 chevy ignition key isn't the same as the door key... Which I thought was a spare ignition key... As I locked the door for the first time because I had actual valuable inside of the truck I realized that I had left the lights on... I went to unlock and the key wouldn't work... I had to go to a very important meeting at my highschool and I called and told I would be late. I knew I would have to use a hanger of some sort so I have my brother a call. After calling him and asking if he could bring me a hanger he said he was too busy when we live about 4 minutes away from where I was at. I then called my Dad and didn't get an answer. I was just pissed that my brother couldn't do me a simple favor when this whole week I've been letting him use MY car to go to work because of his car being in the shop. I was just angry at him and finally I called a friend who just about 2 weeks ago left his keys inside of his car and he gave me a wake up call at about 1 and asked if I could help him out and bring a flashlight hanger and flat head. I left immediately as soon as I put some clothes on and contacts in. I guess karma doesn't work that way. Well I called my friend and luckily he works at a dry cleaners and said he would be on his way as soon as he got off work. He came after about 30 minutes and yes I was a little bummed out that he couldn't stay to help me because he had family plans I thanked him and told him how much it meant. Well after he left I tried to use the hanger to open the door and I had no idea what I was doing since it was an older vehicle. 3 hours pass after deciding to just deal with it after my meeting and I'm stuck looking for numbers for locksmiths not wanting to pay their $30 appointment fee and $30 and up labor fee I was just in a mess I was ultimately deciding on just whatevering It and getting the locksmith and being down $60 but then as I was on the phone with the company I hung up telling them I would call them back and watched your video. Getting the hanger and doing it under 15 minutes What a relief it was. Now all I have to do is jump the battery and I'll be home. Thank you so much. As you can tell its been a long night and I'm ready for bed thank you again.

Instead of using a wire hanger which may be a bit tricky to use as it requires tilting it to get it at the right angle and can be difficult to squeeze between the window glass and door, I would opt for a two-inch wide, one-foot long, 18-gauge/1 mm thick strip of sheet metal or plastic and cut a round one-inch diameter hook-like notch on the side of the strip near the tip you will be inserting. All you need to do is slide the strip up and down near the door knob until it hooks onto the locking rod, after which you pull upward while tugging on the door handle to get the door unlocked. While this custom made tool may not work on all vehicles, I once opened in a matter of seconds, the door of a vehicle which a tow truck operator took over an hour to accomplish with a wire hanger.

It didn’t occur to me to use the hook side. I initially tried folding the end to create a loop, but that didn't work as I couldn't get a proper grip on the lock to pull it up; it would just slide against it. After watching this, I see how the hook side works with its ribbed texture, enabling me to grip it securely as I pulled it up. Thanks for this video!

I'm no locksmith, but 1- The corkscrew end of your contraption will damage the rubber...and rain will come inside. 2- Once I've cut the wire and shaped the cut end to ensure a smooth entry and exit, I would insert it into the vertical part of the doorframe, minimizing rain water due to rubber damage. Locked my keys in my car once. There were a few guys with me and it's hilarious how we got in. We were actually able to pry the door open just by wedging our fingers in and tugging at the top and I reached down and unlocked it. We just pushed the door to, pushed the metal back in place with our bare hands and presto, never had a problem with the door or anything, lol. Thinking back it was a bad idea, but it worked and it's a bit of a big flaw.

Another way is to get a hook on the window winder and pull it around until you have enough room to reach in and undo the car lock.
