Definitely blue-eyed soul. I also heard of hall and Oates referred to as "blue-eyed soul," as well. They have many many top 10 Hits under their belt if you wanna check those out. I've heard that this particular song is the most requested song in all of the 20th century on radio apparently. something like that. I'm sure the top gun appearance of this song probably brought it even a renewed fame in the 80s.

They were known as Blued-eyed soul and I grew up with them thinking they were black singers until I saw them the first time on TV and was shocked. They got their name when singing in a club and after a performance some black marines were there, and they hollered out "that's righteous brothers" and they decided to keep the name.

I'm from Philly and if you remember the Mike Douglas show for new talent, I remember watching the J5 for the first time on the show and I thought to myself that young small singer is going to be a superstar and the rest is history. So sad we lost so many great singers to drugs. MJ, Elvis, and the list goes on. Motown was my favorite. I listen to so many of the Oldies but Goodies on KZbin for free performing the original hits. The Righteous Brothers were a really big hit with everyone, and their song Unchained Melody is a classic still loved very much now, sixty years later.

I was around in 1964 when they sang this. This was the most played song on radio an tv in the 20th Century. Google it if you don’t believe me. Many hit songs together and as soloists. You need to hear Unchained Melody which Bobby Hatfield sang by himself. You want to hear quality. Also there #1 hit Soul and Inspiration. After 60 years these are still played today. Sadly Bobby Hatfield left us in 2003. Enjoy these classics young man.

I feel so sorry for anyone who was not blessed to remember the fabulous 1960’s and early 70’s music. The Golden Age of rock n roll raw talent. These artists went into the studio, recorded their songs, and that was it. The talent was incredible. Especially since there was zero manipulation or changes to the recordings. They definitely sang Soul. I can't describe the shock that ricocheted down the halls of my high school when we found out they were white. I mean, the music was Soul, man. For real. I think they came out even earlier (1962 or 1963) on a label called Moonglow. You should hear the little string of hits they had at that time -- wild and uptempo. Listen to "Koko Joe", "My Babe", "B-Flat Blues", "Little Latin Lupe Lu", "Try to Find Another Man". I cannot understand why reactors don't pull up those early hits and REALLY enjoy the greatness of the Righteous Brothers.

I grew up with their music....and music way before this. Music has no color. You are not the first reactor to 'not expect this'. You need to check out their "Unchained Melody". They each had solos in their performances. "Unchained Melody" is Bobby Hatfield's. This is a live TV performance. No auto tunes. No second takes. Check out "You'll Never Walk Alone" and "Sour and Inspiration". Bobby Hatfield has a five octave range. The Righteous Brothers were referred to a "Blue-eyed Soul". You probably heard this song in the movie "Top Gun".

Devante, welcome to the world of "Blue Eyed Soul". They are the reason that phrase was coined. And don't worry about thinking they were black when they started singing and you couldn't see their faces. They sing with such soul that many people think that. I too have been misguided by my ears before. Dobie Gray was a black singer that I didn't know was black until I saw a video. If you get a chance check out his song "Drift Away". It was a classic when I was growing up and I never knew he was black. I appreciate his music even more now. But I loved your honest reaction to this music video. 👍👍

Blue Eyed Soul is how I have heard it explained as. I was 16 when this was recorded and the girls of the day went crazy over their sound. You have got to remember that this is live, no electronics, no auto tune, just plain talent. Many singers of that era made classics that many still sing word for word today. Unchained Melody was and is the most copied song in history and Bobby singing it solo just killed it. Go back into the 60's charts and see the talent we had back then and you will be surpised.

Back in the day, we listened to music, good music, great music, funny music. Big Band tunes and the very best singers that ever walked the planet. I was born in '55, when the King of Rock 'n Roll was singing about houndogs and shaking his stuff in the jailhouse. I became "aware" when I heard Roy Orbison on a 9-volt transister radio and the world exploded like nuclear skyrocket when The Beatles headlined on Ed Sullivan and the rest is history. None of us cared what color the singer's skin was, it was their sound and their character onstage. Chuck Barry and Louis Armstrong, Nat "King" Cole and Aretha Franklin, but then Ol' Blue Eyes was a tough act to follow, so was The Fifth Dimension and The Temptations; later on we were diggin' us some Carlos Santana. And everyone who was hip was also way cool. We did that little thing called Woodstock;) days of music, brotherhood and love ... and Jimmy Hendrix's Star Spangled Banner. I'm pushing 70 now, but I'm glad that I was born into possibly the greatest time to ever live through. Sorry for the ramble, sometimes I just get going ...

Their debut song was “Little Latin Lupe Lu”. If you want to hear soul, listen to Bill Medley’s “I Just Want To Make Love to You” and Bobbie’s “Summertime”. Bobby had a 4 or 5 octave voice. They could sing anything!

They were called Blue eyed souls ! we only listened through the radio or vynil and everybody thought they were black, the bests of R&B, until they tv became affordable... and we realize they were white …!! Their name was chosen after a tour through the south when they performed in a saloon near a black marine base and some went see them. They were so impressed that shouted what they used to : that's righteous, brothers! They never fail you, allways give chills ! This was their first #1 hit but they were one of the top groups of the sixties, with 22 songs on the Billboard Hot 100 and at one point three albums in the top twenty simultaneously. Their inspiration was R&B which in those days was all 'coloured music', so plenty of people thought they were black when they first heard them. For their first three years they sang raucous rock and roll and were really popular in clubs and dances on the west coast, but in 1964 Phil Specter became their producer and gave them ballads like this one. Bill's bass baritone voice mixed with Bobby's high tenor with a stunning harmony that no group before or since has duplicated, but individually they had powerful voices as soloists. These guys were pure perfection on vocals - raw, stand-up talent. No gimmicks just great lyrics, brilliant arrangement and two guys that could deliver. I remember hearing them on my 'crystal set' radio while sun-baking on the lawn in the backyard as a 13 yo. Abraham Lincoln dude! I thought you were going to say Lurch. Bill still performs these days in Branson, Missouri. Bobby passed in 2003. My wife (btw...black) thought they were black as well. Quite a unique duo.

When I first heard them I thought the same thing. This was called Blue-Eyed Soal Music. You should also check out their songs "Soal And Insperation" , or even " Unchained Melody", " Rock N Roll Heaven. The deep voice is Bill Melody and the other is Bobby Hatfield. Bonby does " Unchained Melody " as a solo act. ❤
