Blue-eyed Soul...1964.....these two men CREATED that concept.....They were given their name by Black men in a club they played down South...who proclaimed them "Righteous, Brothers!" “The Righteous Brothers” are considered by most to be the Greatest Male Vocal Duet Of All Time. I agree. Between Bill Medley’s Lows and Bobby Hatfield’s Highs they can hit every note on an 88 key piano. No other male singers can do that. Legendary. “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin” was the most played song on radio in the 20th Century. "Unchained Melody" - Bobby Hatfield Live 1965. Considered by most as The Greatest Live Male Vocal Performance In History... I agree. Bobby's use of "Runs" is brilliant. He is the master of the technique and started the trend. 7 notes just to say the word "I".... Their name came when they did a show in a smaller venue and a black man told them…. You two Brothers are Righteous. In 1983, in Newport Beach O.C. Calif. Bill and Bobby at the Jolly Roger Restaurant . I was 13 feet away for... "Unchained Melody"- "You've Lost That Lovin’ Feelin‘" - "Soul And Inspiration".... They were perfect, awesome, amazing, incredible......

Bill Medley: “At that time, Orange County was about the whitest place in the country. There were black Marines from El Toro Marine base that heard there were these two guys singing rhythm and blues. So, they came to hear us. They had their own way of talking. If white guys liked something, they’d say ‘That’s cool’ or ‘bitchin.’’ A black guy would say, ‘That’s righteous.’ If they liked you as a friend, they’d call you ‘brother,’” explained Medley. “I think it was Bobby who said, ‘What about the name the Marines have been callin’ us, the black guys. How about the Righteous Brothers?’ I said, ‘Oh man, I would love that.’ That was it-we put it on the record. The black Marines from El Toro Marine base named us.”

Dub, when this came out NO ONE had heard anything like it. An emotional balled sung in the style of black R&B and lead by a base baritone. Full orchestral background (the Wall of Sound). It is actually in the Library of Congress as a song that made a major impact on American music. The ‘brothers’ had been singing Rock n roll for three years before Phil Specter took them on and had this written for them … that break down at the end was pure Righteous Brothers… the way they had always sung before. And they continued to do hard rock in their later careers because it was their roots. They were still performing together in 2003 when they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

I was 9 when this came out, and thank God my mom raised me to have an open mind. Another 'wall-breaker' song was "Lovers Concerto" by the Toys. Some kids would think the group was white (classical music roots of the song, tone of singers voice) while other kids said she had to be black because of the soulful swing. These guys were originally called "The Paramores" but in those days, there were black clubs and white clubs, and people in the black clubs thought that this was a black group, and people would say "Play them Righteous Brothers again", and the name stuck. For the recording session of Unchained melody, Bill Medley was stuck in traffic, so they decided to lay down Bobby Hatfield's track first. When Bill heard it, he refused to record his parts, because he said that it was perfect just the way it was. He later joked that he never thought that it would be a hit, and that he's been kicking himself ever since.

THIS song was dropped 60 years ago. Bobby Hatfield (tenor) died in 2003 at age 63, while still touring 38 years later, with Medley. Bill Medley, age 84, is still touring today. You NEVER get tired of listening to this kind of talent…

They weren't called the Righteous Brothers for nothing my friend. I loved them when i was a teenager. So glad to see them appreciated again. Bobby Hatfield got taken down by drugs, so horribly sad and such a waste but he's being appreciated posthumously. Life is such a trip, isn't it?

At that time there was no electronic voice manipulation. It was just you a microphone and the audience. This is a live performance and it is just pure Raw Talent. Probably the best singing duet in musical history.

You should look into music produced by Phil Spector....it was called the Wall of Sound....he wrote and produced this song.....he was a musical genius who murder a girl at his mansion and died in prison a couple of months ago....fascinating life.
