Fun fact: SHINee's "Marry You" is part of a trilogy. The story starts with their debut song "Replay" in 2008, where they have a crush on an older woman; it then continues in 2015 with their song "Love Sick," where they confess their love to the girl and start a relationship; and then in 2021 they propose to the girl in their song "Marry You." If you read the lyrics to all three songs, you will see similarities in the lyrics that connect them all together to make one complete story. :D This performance is part of a special showcase SHINee did called The Ringtone, which was part of their Don't Call Me promotions. It was a celebration for the fact that they were finally making a comeback after 3 years now that Onew, Key and Minho were discharged from the military. It is called "Ringtone" because their title track for this comeback was "Don't Call Me" so it was making reference to a ringtone for a phone, as well as the double meaning ring-tone as a reference to their new song "Marry You". Plus, it also represents that SHINee's symbol is a diamond (like a diamond ring) and the showcase is setting the tone for this comeback, etc. SHINee are known for their harmonies, that is one of their many claims to fame. No one harmanizes like SHINee. Their 5 part harmony is one of the best in the industry. That's why SHINee are known as CDNee or CD-eaters because they sound just as good live, if not better, than they do in their studio recordings. That's why Shawols always say you need to see SHINee perform their songs live, because SHINee live is 300 times better than any of their recordings. The ONLY thing SHINee is not good at is lip syncing, so when you hear SHINee sing, 95% of the time it will be live. It's a running joke between fans and the members that you can tell when SHINee are lip syncing because they are so bad at it, that is why they avoid it at all costs. (If you ask any of the members, what is something you are not good at? One of the very first things they will say is, "I am horrible at lip syncing." -- I have heard the members say this multiple times with my own ears.) Yes, over the years they have become better at lip syncing then they used to be, but now they have gained the reputation as the group that always sings live, so unless they are required to lip sync for a specific reason, what you will hear is live vocals. SHINee live is unmatched and it's literally referred to as the SHINee standard. It's the standard that all other groups strive to reach and SHINee are the vocalists that all other artists try to emulate. All the members vocals are highlighted differently in SHINee's songs now because they all have to cover what would normally have been Jonghyun's parts in the song. When preparing for their "Don't Call Me" comeback the members all said that this album really made them realize how important the role of a main vocalist was to their songs and how much they missed Jonghyun. Taemin and Onew are the ones that have really stepped in as SHINee's main vocalists now, which means that they have had to redistribute all the parts of their songs, which is why you notice Key's and Minho's voices more because they are singing a lot more parts in the songs. For example, Onew is now experimenting with new ways of singing in order to showcase his full vocal range -- he is now feeling more responsibility as one of SHINee's main vocalist to make sure he is able to maintain the same vocal quality that he is known for, as he ages. However, Onew is known in the industry as the male vocalist with the most consistent vocals. He has been one of SHINee's main vocalists since debut and he is recognized as one of the top vocalists in Kpop since even before debut. Onew was only one of two people ever personally cast by Lee SooMan, the founder of SM, and he was chosen at age 16 for his outstanding vocal ability. Onew's vocals are so good that as a rookie he was even a vocal coach and mentor to a lot of SM's trainees. In performances like this one, I think that you may notice all the members vocal abilities more because they have now stepped out of the shadow of Jonghyun's unbelievable vocal gymnastics. Jonghyun is no longer there to focus on. But all the members of SHINee have always been amazing vocalists. Once you see some more of each of their solo work, as well as more of their live concert performances, you will understand what I mean. There is a reason why they are called SHINee, because all the members Shine in all aspects of artistry. That's why it is said that the members of SHINee no longer have fixed roles in the group because they all can literally do it all, and they have. SM really struck gold with this group and it will never be duplicated in this same way again. SHINee are a one of a kind group.

Yeah Shinee rarely lipsyncs, but they do use additional backup vocals and they definitly use auto-tune and other vocals mods sometimes for various effects. In this performance, I'm not sure, but I think the verses are their natural live vocals, but the chorous has something going on. Not sure if they are singing on top of backing track vocals or there are effects on the mic.

Don't know if others have shared this. Marry you is the 3rd installment of Shinee's love for a noona (older woman). The 1st is Replay from the first album (crush, puppy love) , followed by Love Sick from Odd Eye album (dating) and Marry You from Don't Call Me album (wanna marry her). Who knows, in their next album, when Taemin is back, they'll continue the story line, about sending their kids to preschool. 😅😅 About the song reminding you of Janet Jackson, I know what you mean. Thank you for your reaction for Marry You, love this song so much. Another song from their 2013 Japanese song Live performance called 1000years, Always By Your Side. They sang in front of a lot of crowd on an outdoor concert. You’ll hear their wonderful live vocals & harmonies. I love Minho’s rap part and Onew’s part so much, Jonghyun in black shirt is the main vocal as usual do a lot of adlibs, vocal acrobatics as expected. SHINee does use backing vocals and even lipsyncing sometimes. Some fans are too eager to create legends that they ALWAYS sing live, which isn't true for them or for any other kpop group :) But they are very capable vocalists, they are not afraid to show their voices, they have tons of great live performances and they definitely sang live in this video.

If you wanna know why they hate auto tune so much just listen to ring ding dong MV vs when they sing rock concert version. They do use backing vocals on shows, but their mics are ON and the backing is set on low. Their lip syncing sucks though, if you saw their video on I can see your voice, where they had to lip sync to the contestants, it was hilariously awkward and exaggerated. Jinki Jonghyun have openly said it is easier and more natural for them to just go live instead of stressing about timing when lipsyncing
