Been on the subscription model for over six months and have not used it at all for four months. I don't mind that as I will get back to it in a while and I value having it as a vast and quality resource at my finger tips. Appreciate what you are doing in this space as it has saved me plenty.

Good stuff. A half decent developer can build workable software that does a "good enough" job for a particular problem, but making a viable sustainable business model is a whole other different problem domain.

We have had similar talks about pricing for the simulator software I work on. The question is to get the big one-off projects that take lots of work and time but pay bigger sums or have something that is lower cost and subscription-based and targets a larger group of users. I feel the way the industry the software targets is going, the need to switch to a subscription and more generic software will have to be done sooner than later.
@tomthelestaff-iamtimcorey75973 жыл бұрын
That seems like the trend I have been seeing also, smaller focused subscription apps that are built up with new features over time.

Please make a video for the pricing model for freelancers working for different clients.
@tchpowdog3 жыл бұрын
I don't think there is one "model" for this. You kind of just have to work your way into it. In the beginning, you may undercharge and overcharge. Over time, you'll figure out what works best for you and the client. Study the market and industry vertical in which the client resides! Research what other devs are charging in those markets and geographical areas. Cost of software varies by state/region as well. Consider taxes - do you have to charge sales tax where you or the client resides? Sign up to one of the hundred freelance sites on the internet and start bidding projects, or at least see what others are bidding.

@@tchpowdog Is there any kind of formula to calculate freelancer total fee charged to a client. I am using this formula to charge my clients (( total hours I have to spend ( in h: mm ) * 24 ) * per hour rate). Can anyone help me?
@tchpowdog3 жыл бұрын
@@adityarane2758 hours * 24 * rate ??? That's mighty high, unless you meant 2.4. There shouldn't be one formula you use. There are many more factors to consider, as I've mentioned.

Hello Tim, Sorry for asking a question not related to the video, But would you please make a video about reporting in desktop apps? I have been depending on RDLC reports for several years now, and every time a new version of visual studio arrives I am faced with numerous problems, the latest of which is that VS 2022 doesn't support RDLC report designer extension.. So is there an alternative that works well with .Net 6? I have tried Syncfusion products and it's full of bugs and their tech support is a nightmare.. on one thread the person responding to me sent me 3 times incorrect link to code that supposedly solved the issue .. and the issue was not solved (the issue was that whenever I try to print a report more than 3 pages the application crashes due to OutOfMemory Exception that is caused by the way they are rendering the report) Sorry again for the long comment, have a nice day.

I was a paid user for Pluralsight for 3 years and then started buy courses from Udemy, I can second your statement that you are right about not doing much with PS and putting the courses in Udemy library and then forgetting about them :D Btw @TimCorey did you stop the 1 time purchase as i can't find on your website?

I'd not be so quick to dismiss ad driven revenue. A free app with unobtrusive, but we'll placed, ads can make more than coffee money. Not "retire early" money, but definitely can be an additional 30% or more of what a well paid dev might make at their day job. Plus since it's free users perception is *totally different* than how someone views it even if it was only $1. Additionally tax and accounting becomes more involved when you charge directly, even in an app store. So as a side gig revenue model ads can work well.
@tomthelestaff-iamtimcorey75973 жыл бұрын
Fair points, many of which I have raised to Tim before. I really respect his perspective, in that folks entrust their time to him, and he feels making them watch too many ads disrespects them. Honestly, it's a balance. We each do what is right for our perspectives and needs.

There was a discussion about this on a couple of different sites a couple of years ago. If it is a website you can figure about 100 hours from the planning to deploy stages. So price it at $50 per hour X 100 hours.

Hi Tim. Do you plan on doing any more MVC content? Microsoft is treating it a bit like a stepchild now that Blazor is on the scene - but the job market still loves MVC...and it is the job market who pays...

MVC isn't dead. Not by a long shot. It doesn't cover the same ground as Blazor. Both can co-exist because they fit different use cases.
@andywalter74263 жыл бұрын
@@IAmTimCorey What are the use cases for MVC that blazor does not offer?
@IAmTimCorey3 жыл бұрын
MVC is fully server-side. It functions similarly to an API in that the endpoints can be called by the Views or directly (double-use). It is faster than Blazor (purely server-side with no SignalR connection to maintain). It is a pattern that has worked since the .NET Framework so upgrading projects over time is possible. It has a richer ecosystem of examples, support, and a long track-record to point to for businesses that are looking for stability. Blazor has some great features, but that doesn't make it the only choice.
