I agree with him about Waugh. Steve took over the no.1 ranked test team, made them better, but they rarely had to play against decent sides....and when Australia struggled, Steve never really had a plan B....Steve's main strengths as Captain where: keeping the side hungry while playing against inferior sides and giving players belief they could be stars before they were (Hayden, Langer). But his field placements always lacked imagination

He correctly dropped Shane Warne in a must-win test and they won to retain the series. It's hard work to keep a good team on top. And, is consistently batting his team out of trouble when it's 3 for 30. You need to do some homework mate. Kind regards.

I like how Chappell when talking about Cricket always manages to get in something about when he played. Problem is that was well back in the last century. Perhaps he doesn't give enough credit for the way Waugh managed and developed his players to function as team, largely due to the fact that in the Chappell era that never took place.

You want a captain who built and developed a team. Try Bobby Simpson, Allan Border, Steven Fleming. Steve Waugh inherited a team of champions. He was a good cricketer but average captain. He was also a grumpy self serving cricketer who wrote the thickest waste of time about his cricket experiences, I've ever read. Further than that, any captain who's ego is so fragile he would sack the greatest tactician the game has ever known in SKW, is proof positive of a narcissist who proved to be a shocking judge of character. His brother Junior, on the other hand was a great and respected team player and genius in slips. A very gifted batsman who on his day was the equal of any cricketer. So for Steve Waugh, I can think of about five or six Australian captains who I'd select before Waugh would even make the frame. Both Taylor and Pointing get to the finish line way before Waugh. So I largely agree with Chapelli. In fact Chapelli I think would be my number one all time best captain world wide. He would be my captain in any world eleven and Steve Waugh wouldn't even make the side.

Chappell is right, maybe not about Ponting being better then Waugh. But he does not get the credit he deserves. In a 2-3 year period, Australia lost Hayden, Langer, Gilchrist, Warne and McGrath. All could be argued to be in the top 15 or 20 to have played in the Baggy Green. Mcgrath, Warne and Gilchrist would be in an the all time test 11 by most experts. He has managed to keep Australia really competitive in tough times as they try to gel a new side together. That was a one in a lifetime team

Steve Waugh was a far better captain! Ponting had the best team in the history of cricket at his disposal yet was super conservative. Ponting was not a good captain technically & like Afridi his conduct was abysmal. He was a great leader by virtue of his batting & fielding-which were both phenomenal. Really he inherited the best team in the world from Waugh who had inherited a very good one from Taylor in 1999. Ponting's great successes was with that team-but he lost 2 Ashes series in England, nearly lost to Bangladesh in 2006, lost in India. For me it is him or Greg Chappell as worst Aussie captain of my lifetime.

this video is a joke. i like ricky. but steve is way better captain than ricky. steve made a good team into a great team n then handed it to ricky while also passing all his knowledge to ricky. steve ended the domination of WI by Frank Worrell Trophy in 1995 there r many elements in making a team win a match. the most important is mental toughness. how brutal u make ur team to win is what matters. steve is more succesful in doing that. he's more of a man than ricky. the contests in steve's time(99-2004) were tougher than ricky's(2004 onwards). in test cricket, when u go backwards in time, cricket gets tougher. Everything(pitches, bowling, contests,... ) is superior in earlier days if u go backwards. test cricket determines everything. steve captained a team in much tougher contests than ricky. n in such tougher contests, steve is most successful (72% win rate). ricky is 2nd best, but he's way below at 62%. ofcourse, there might be better captains than steve in earlier times 60's, 70's n 80's since i haven't seen matches in those days. but i've seen most of steve's n ricky's matches. in the same way, ricky is 100 times better captain than the shitty clarke. i dont even consider that shit(clarke) as a leader. just cricket in general is shit now a days. there is no contest between bat n bowl. its a batsman game. even a bowler scores hundred these days. n it happens so often. the batsmen score 100's 200's on shitty pitches n they feel they r the best. these guys cant even cross 20 if they played in 70's or 80's. the quality of the pitches were way better n the bowling attack too. in that time, batsmen took several blows in a test match(thats how much dangerous bowling attack was on good pitches with superior pace, bounce n swing). these days, batting is a joke. n hence i stopped watching cricket.

Chappell's claim Waugh is 4th best amongst the 4 captains he mentioned is utterly absurd. I've watched every game with each of those 4 captains over the last 3 decades and Steve Waugh was a superb captain - even when Chappell speaks of him his throat constrict and he becomes more animated,he clearly has a bone to pick with Waugh for whatever reason, I would imagine Tugga said something nasty about CHappell at some point at that was it. Chappell is being not but childish in his chidings of Tugga.

Chappelli only hated Steve Waugh from 1999 onwards because he thought Warne should have succeeded Taylor as captain. This also coincided with Ian Chappell making a ridiculous accusation about SWaugh being selfish when batting in the closing stages of the 4th ashes test at Melbourne in December 1998, Taylor's second last test before retiring. Chappelli did however give SWaugh the rightful kudos for his magnificent century in the world cup that year (1999) against South Africa when Australia were deep in trouble in a game that would have seen them miss the semi-finals had they lost.

Blame Warne for it-he didn't step up during that series, in fact he was a poor bowler in India during his career. Singh tore the Aussies apart, Warne took 10 wickets at an average of over 50 in the series & let Waugh down. Chappell has always been his head cheerleader for the captaincy & that is why he hates Waugh, also that Waugh changed his style of batting-but the reality that Waugh playing the way Chappell wanted hm to saw him dropped from the team for long periods in the early 1990's, he changed & went on to become an all-time great.

Chappell hates Steve Waugh, hated Bradman... jealous is the word here, hates the very cream of the crop this guy.

Bradman was not liked by his teammates. Bradman was elitist and disrespectful to the generations of Australian cricketers that followed him. He was also an average Dad, being embarrassed to walk with his disabled daughter. 99.94 average or not, he was a shit bloke.

Chapplle is a guy who don't forgive brainlocks like Afridi did,I think Stew waugh's brainlock was 2001 India series,Specially Eaden gardens,Like AIi bacher one he mentions here.If he found one stupidity he rates the guy.I think Waugh,Afridi fall to this. All know Bothom is exception,Lifetime enemy.By the way I think He is a person of his kind, and the only commentator I would like to listen,Not many words, bit boring to here,But interesting and really worth listen to.

How many times has Ian Chappel being proven wrong? I comes across as such a great "reader" but its just his looks I guess (looks like a professor). You can never have Afridi as captain, what a joke, 2011 WC.
