This is the concert that started my lifelong appreciation of Ian Dury and the Blockheads. There is so much energy here, utter brilliance, perfection. I taped this of the radio using an old fashioned tape recorder and microphone gizmo. Still got the recording to this day. Now where can I get the rest of this concert??? Somebody help please... Thanks for posting, it brought back many memories to me.

Seeing and hearing Andy Serkis as Uncle Ian has brought home how much I miss the ol' geezer. Andy should get the BAFTA, Oscar and every other award going, truly magnificent performance in a truly brilliant film. I saw Ian Dury about 25 times and he was one of the best and the Blockheads are the greatest live band EVER! Bless this beautiful man and his beautiful band(s).

Couple of people have asked me about this as I was a young music fan/journalist at the time. The riff was nicked from Charlie Haden's bass solo on Ornette Coleman's 1959 track Ramblin'. Dury never denied that and even apologised for it to Haden himself (Dury was a huge Coleman fan). Haden just laughed and admitted HE had stolen it from a Cajun fiddle player. Aerosmith perhaps did the same.

Yep, that's John. The complete left to right, starting with the keys is Mickey Gallagher, Chaz (who also doubled on keys live) Charley Charles (drums) Norman Watt-Roy (bass) and John Turnbull (guitar). They normally had sax player Davey Payne with them. Sadly Charley, Ian and Ian's first wife Betty (a talented artist) were all taken by cancer. The Blockheads still play live and are absolutely amazing!
