Ian Dury - Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll | Reaction!

While the Blockheads are behind Ian on this track, his name is the only one that appears in the title. Anyway, I didn't know that he helped popularize sex, drugs, and rock & roll as a phrase. Those 3 things are fun, but he seems to make a point about there being more to life than those things. The song's all about freedom and individuality. You'd be hard-pressed to find someone with a cooler voice than Dury's.

Dury talks about getting the riff from Charlie Haden's solo on Ornette's "Ramblin'" in some video, maybe the Stiff Records 1977 tour documentary. Ian apologized to Charlie nicking the riff but Charlie said, don't worry about it, I took it from "Old Joe Clark." Charlie went back to that melody numerous times including recording a version of "Old Joe Clark" featuring his son-in-law Jack Black (yes, that one) on vocals. The Stiff doc is worth watching: the Blockheads, Elvis Costello, 3/4 of Rockpile. Great label, slogan "If it ain't Stiff it ain't worth a f*ck."

Another great track from Ian. I was so excited to borrow this LP from a mate in the 70s and eventually bought my own copy. Baxter Dury (Ian’s son) who is on the album cover with Ian recreated the album cover shot recently and that is worth checking out.

Apart from his voice and the top notch musicians in the blockheads the stand out for me has always been his lyrics. Is he a song writer or a poet? Both I think. He words are emotional, cutting and comical. The good news is there are many other great tracks for you to listen to. All of the album 'New boots and panties' for instance and 'Do it yourself'. Please do more, he'll become one of your favourite artists

My favourite is (wake up and make love to me) apart from Ian being amazing you won't hear a better band the musicianship is first class! oh and the little boy on the cover is his son Baxter Dury also a musician I seen him supporting Noel Gallagher a few years ago.
