I once sent a CV, cover letter and small portfolio to Private Eye in the hope of finding work there. I received a hand-written and signed reply note from Ian Hislop himself stating that he regretted to inform me that there were no opportunities available. I was amazed that he'd spared the time and had been polite enough to write back to me, and it was without a doubt the best rejection letter I've ever received (I have to admit I was somewhat starstruck too). I loved him enough as it was, but to receive that made me respect him just that little bit more. I might not see eye-to-eye with him on certain things, but that ought to be expected. I still see him as an ultimately and thoroughly decent man.

There is nothing wrong with nationalism, it is a healthy attitude towards a common system, as long as it does not include a hatred of foreigners. @@jonb6417 Have you read the Eye particularly? I'm not sure of Hislop's politics, but he always struck me as a Conservative voter. The nature of any political satire is that the finger will mostly be pointed at those in government, because they are the ones doing the most "work" (good and bad). The Eye has been (and still is) savaging Corbyn and Labour, as well as Boris & the Tories, but at the end of the day, the Tories are actually doing stuff and Labour can only really talk about doing stuff, being in opposition.

Ian's a good satirist and the point of satire for me is to point out hypocrisy, misleading and lies. Their weapon is truth, the more negative effect a target of satire has on society the more value satire has as a weapon. It should never concern itself with whom the satire is targeted, thus be politically unbiased. Some looking through their personal political prism would accuse a good satirist of being partisan for pointing the satire at their own parties expense, while completely ignoring a good satirists history of calling things correct no matter whom their target. I also value the claims from a partisan satirist too if their claims have a basis in truth, as putting ones own group in order has more value than focusing only on the issues of others. nous devrions tous être charlie !

Ian Hislop is a man I cannot fail to warm to. I have always found him to be a man of immense integrity, whit and humour. One of my go to entertainers and political commentators. He is exactly where he needs to be, "on the outside of the tent pissing in" to quote Sir Winston Churchill. The political life as an employment, is not for the likes of him. Men of integrity do not go into politics, it would spit them out! I am sure Mr. Hislop sleeps fine at night, with his conscience warmly embraced...not so for the likes of those who are in politics and selling out day after day! I think the test is never whether or not the world is better after you than it was before you, but instead whether or not it would be better if you'd never been in it. Basically the same except it eliminates the influence of others and just sticks to what you've done. Same goes for a thing you did in the world. Is it richer for it, than it otherwise would've been? I don't think that's necessarily the be-all and end-all but it's a solid place to begin. I'd certainly put an investigative journalism effort such as Private Eye in the "is better for" category.

described as "a cuddly ball of fluff" by Angela Merkel , Ian "the Hiss" Hislop had a tough upbringing . his first job was in Billingsgate market where he was a "topper upper" , a job that involved easy picking for the young Hiss , however he soon fell foul of the Kray twins and joined the Richardson brothers as their "topper upper", until they got jailed , then he wandered in and out of various "earners" until as fate would have it he met Bernard Ingrams in a pub and decided to work for him . the rest is history .

Well, I enjoyed that, good man yourself Ian Hislop. I think I'd probably only have enjoyed the interview more if he'd done a quick turn on that piano at the end. I have visions of him giving a rousing rendition of Onward Christian Soldiers or Jerusalem surrounded by the liberal atheist journalists of Private Eye.

So Hislop plays the piano, eh?. I'd like to see that. I wonder what his bag is. Bach and a bit of Haydn probably. Although I can't see him hammering out something like Prokofiev or Schoenberg.

It's a bit unfair to equate Brand and Farage IMO. He says both "do not offer solutions". Well Brand implores people "not to vote" I reckon that falls under the category for "do not offer solutions". On the other hand, Farage has a blatant correction to the issue of large scale immigration, the strain on public services, wage compression for the working class and multiculturalism: leaving the EU. I felt like Hislop spoke a lot but in the end didn't say anything at all. He did rightfully put the question: "would you ever go into politics?" into place, honestly if you've watched HIGNFY or read Private Eye the man is the last person to go down that route. A wasted question.

I agree. Hislop claimed Farage and UKIP just sneered at everything, but offered no solutions (which obviously Farage does, as you pointed out) But when asked the same question about himself and Private Eye, he just said the same thing he accused UKIP of doing.

Deep Zepp The difference: Private Eye is a satirical newspaper. UKIP is a political party. If UKIP where a satirical newspaper I'm sure he wouldn't criticize them. The job of newspapers is to uncover problems. The job of political parties is to solve problems.
