In his Private Eye office, Ian Hislop gives a rare sit-down interview for the latest in our Chat Life series.
He muses on the two current non-establishment movements in politics; Nigel Farage under UKIP, and Russell Brand. He also discusses his faith in God, while admitting that most of the people he works with are 'liberal atheists'.
Ian assesses how the BBC, especially in relation to Have I Got News For You, deals with controversy. He also gives a revealing insight into which newspapers he reads, and those he merely skim-reads!

I once sent a CV, cover letter and small portfolio to Private Eye in the hope of finding work there. I received a hand-written and signed reply note from Ian Hislop himself stating that he regretted to inform me that there were no opportunities available. I was amazed that he'd spared the time and had been polite enough to write back to me, and it was without a doubt the best rejection letter I've ever received (I have to admit I was somewhat starstruck too). I loved him enough as it was, but to receive that made me respect him just that little bit more. I might not see eye-to-eye with him on certain things, but that ought to be expected. I still see him as an ultimately and thoroughly decent man.

@Tim Loves Bacon - We have a special place for our close family, over and above others. We also do the same for our close friends, and so on all the way up to everyone within the country, surely? There is nothing wrong with nationalism, it is a healthy attitude towards a common system, as long as it does not include a hatred of foreigners. I disagree with you; it is possible to be proud of many things, and you seem to suggest it cannot sit side by side with the other sources of pride you list.

@@jonb6417 Have you read the Eye particularly? I'm not sure of Hislop's politics, but he always struck me as a Conservative voter. The nature of any political satire is that the finger will mostly be pointed at those in government, because they are the ones doing the most "work" (good and bad). The Eye has been (and still is) savaging Corbyn and Labour, as well as Boris & the Tories, but at the end of the day, the Tories are actually doing stuff and Labour can only really talk about doing stuff, being in opposition.

Ian Hislop on God, Nigel Farage, the cautious BBC and 'Have I Got News For You' 27.12.23 0539am i mean private eye, although being deemed considered, should be aware that just becuz hip young kiddies or those in the know dont wear their insights or parade their knowledge for all to discern on their sleeve - that they're to be deemed "slow" or that they require or demand slow news so they and the public can "get it". i do agree that news is just an industry and does merely churn out the same old news on a stick packaged and parceled almost before it happens - that damnable anticipation, y'see, which fucks with their collective mindsets should they mis-read the situation .... and the blurghhhh blarr blguh quote was about as near the mark as anyone could get. but................... what to do: create a private eye based you tube channel which allows any old soak and those imbued with enough considered ire to come along and waffle on in the style of a news channel refer to eg: GBNews or TalkTV... nice idea if you want off the cuff and honest insight but the ratings would be terrible... hint hint.

I agree with your opinion on on Mr Hislop, however having a piano is not linked to to his decency as a human. Stalin had a piano and played it regular, so did the gestapo, and other high ranking Nazis. A piano speaks of culture, not for people to be described as decent or good. Now he may have played the piano well but that makes no one decent.

Ian's a good satirist and the point of satire for me is to point out hypocrisy, misleading and lies. Their weapon is truth, the more negative effect a target of satire has on society the more value satire has as a weapon. It should never concern itself with whom the satire is targeted, thus be politically unbiased. Some looking through their personal political prism would accuse a good satirist of being partisan for pointing the satire at their own parties expense, while completely ignoring a good satirists history of calling things correct no matter whom their target. I also value the claims from a partisan satirist too if their claims have a basis in truth, as putting ones own group in order has more value than focusing only on the issues of others. nous devrions tous être charlie !

Ed Lewis there is an obvious mistake in your comment. However with your error in grammar i learn how not to be. Pictures stimulate the mind far quicker. ‘A picture paints a thousand words’ Ironically private eye has sketches and cartoons. I saw a very nice pop up card that showed a Maple Tree. Snobbery between abilities causes unmerited conflicts. Discipline a person to better their skills or accept their skills as unique to them rather than purely judge.

Quite funny to hear him reveal that the most offended letters he gets are from right-wingers. Even in the comments here, the only angry and upset comments are from right-wingers who clicked on the video and wrote an abusive comment without bothering to even watch the video. Says it all, really.

Really? Where?....I've got this far and seen nothing of your "observations" ....Care to list them, John? Just point them out and I will re-read all those comments I have waded through without seeing any real "Right-Wing" "abusive comments." May I suggest you change the colour-tint in your spectacles? (Ever so politely of course...would not want to cause offence or "abuse".)

Some years ago a girlfriend of mine said that" You can tell a man from the shoes he wears". Hislop appears to be a prime exampel of what hse was talking about! But Ian will be aware that God doesn't judge you on what clothes your wear. Great personality and Private Eye is a great magazine!

...My grandfather ( Jack Lambley ) was a cobbler from... Northampton, ( The recognised home of Cobblers ) and he would say that you could tell a man's personality from his shoes ! Also he was unable to enlist for the second world war because he had to stay in England and repair the Forces footwear.

I think the test is never whether or not the world is better after you than it was before you, but instead whether or not it would be better if you'd never been in it. Basically the same except it eliminates the influence of others and just sticks to what you've done. Same goes for a thing you did in the world. Is it richer for it, than it otherwise would've been? I don't think that's necessarily the be-all and end-all but it's a solid place to begin. I'd certainly put an investigative journalism effort such as Private Eye in the "is better for" category.

Well, I enjoyed that, good man yourself Ian Hislop. I think I'd probably only have enjoyed the interview more if he'd done a quick turn on that piano at the end. I have visions of him giving a rousing rendition of Onward Christian Soldiers or Jerusalem surrounded by the liberal atheist journalists of Private Eye.
